2 The future of offshore wind As a subsidiary company of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd (MHI), Mitsubishi Power Systems Europe (MPSE) is part of one of the world s most innovative, successful and responsible businesses. Founded in 2007, MPSE is headquartered in London with branch offices across Europe, tasked with driving forward MHI s power business in Europe, Middle East and Africa. The local offshore wind development team is based in offices in London, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Hamburg. This team is supported by MHI colleagues in Yokohama, Nagasaki and Shimonoseki (our in-house hydraulic manufacturing division). SeaAngel offshore turbine MPSE is proud to introduce SeaAngel, our offshore specific wind turbine. The 7MW SeaAngel will benefit from Digital Displacement Transmission (DDT) and a rotor diameter of 167m. 3 SeaAngel s journey MHI has been involved with the research and development of wind energy systems since our first wind turbine was built in MHI has a wealth of complementary skills including shipbuilding and marine construction, aerospace and power systems that stretches back to the 1880s. This provides a sound foundation for an innovative approach to offshore wind power. In November 2010, MPSE acquired Scotland based Artemis Intelligent Power Ltd after recognising the huge potential of Digital Displacement technology. The Digital Displacement Transmission (DDT) inside SeaAngel, which consists of Digital Displacement Pump (DDP) and Motor (DDM), replaces a conventional gearbox. This enables a very high operating efficiency even in part load conditions, unprecedented controllability, and the use of highly reliable synchronous generators. Creating reliable and innovative products that generate value for customers has been first priority since the establishment of MHI and rigorous validation of technology continues as a core philosophy of our business. Key testing milestones: DDT function test at 1.6MW test rig in Edinburgh First offshore wind turbine off the coast of Choshi, Japan DDT driven wind turbine demonstration onshore in Yokohama, Japan MW SeaAngel onshore demonstration in Scotland MW floating offshore turbine Fukushima Bay, Japan 7MW offshore at European sites under investigation In 2012, MHI delivered its first offshore wind turbine off the coast of Choshi, Japan, in partnership with Tokyo Electric Power Company and supported by New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization of Japan. 2

4 SeaAngel 81.6m blade With an MHI design validated by extensive testing, SeaAngel s pioneering wind turbine blades are built to ensure that SeaAngel has class leading performance. The blade successfully achieves 100% interception at the receptor. Outstanding Aerodynamic Performance Airfoils used for SeaAngel blades were tested to gain precise aerodynamic data. This will ensure accurate performance and load prediction when in service. Testing results demonstrated excellent aerodynamic performance. Manufacturing MHI prides itself on its hard won reputation for high quality manufacturing. The SeaAngel blade is being developed under the same rigorous process development regime. 3

5 The DDT demonstration wind turbine Yokohama, Japan Following the DDT function test on our 1.6MW test rig in the UK in summer 2011, the process of replacing the gearbox of the Yokohama prototype with a DDT drivetrain began in May This enable us to validate the performance of the DDT in real wind turbine conditions from autumn Yokohama, Japan DDP DDM In summer 2012 testing started in our Yokohama and Shimonoseki factories to ensure the reliability of the demonstration wind turbine.
