7 Egypt Early civilization that includes the Nile Delta area Egyptian kings were gods known as pharaohs, and thought to be almost as powerful as heaven s gods. They had a government based on theocracy or religious rule, and eventually created huge structures called the pyramids. Often times these pyramids would house mummies of royal families. Egyptians also develop a type of writing known as hieroglyphics and a writing surface called papyrus.

8 Hinduism Religion not traced back to a single founder Hindus believe in the process of reincarnation one will be brought back as someone or something else based on your karma or good and bad deeds. Main god is the world soul or Brahman often seen as a God with 3 different personalities Brahma the Creator, Vishnu the protector, and Shiva the Destroyer Important to the Hindu society is the Caste system which allows for class distinctions

9 Buddhism Founder is Siddhartha Guatama (Buddha) wondering the forests of India for 6 years. Around 500BC he searched for Enlightenment or wisdom eventually coming up with the 4 noble truths and encouraging people to follow the Eightfold Path of behavior. 10 Judaism Canaan an area located at the eastern edge of the Mediterranean Sea eventually became home to a people known as the Israelites later Jews Much of European and American history stems from these people whose founder is Abraham. The Judeo-Christian God told Abraham to go their around 1800BC his decedents will go through a great and amazing history that you can find in the Torah (or the first 5 books of the Old Testament Bible for those of you who didn t know). Their religion is Monotheistic (One God) and they have many leaders including Moses, Kings David, and Solomon. Eventually a guy named Jesus comes and changes everything

11 China Starting in around 2000BC china began to have a series of ruling Dynasty s (family of leaders lasting many centuries). Around 500BC an important scholar by the name of Confucius pops up and tries to help organize society around the 5 basic relationships. To protect themselves China will build one of the Great Wonders of the World the Great wall.

12 Greece About ¾ of Greece are covered in Mtns. But it also has very fertile valleys and a place were a great civilization will come to be. The civilization starts around 2000BC but around 1200BC a war known as the Trojan War will take place. Eventually a blind man named Homer writes some epic poems around 725BC, the Iliad and Odyssey and Greek myth takes off. We see mythology with Zues and Athena, and City-states like Athens and Sparta. Festivals like the Olympics. Philosophers like Socrates, Plato and Aristotle. And Eventually Alexander the Great The Greeks eventually become one of the first nations to develop a democracy Specifically a direct democracy with all citizens having a say. 13 Rome Early Rome After 509bc Rome became a republic (form of government w/citizens who have the right to vote for their leader) in Rome it was only Free Born Males Patricians (wealthy landowners) and Plebeians (common farmer, artisan, or merchant Most of Pop.) Rome had a senate but in times of crisis it could appoint a dictator who had absolute power to make laws and control the army The Roman Army was a key feature of its success. Made up of units called legions which included 5000 infantry and a small group of cavalry Eventually Rome will encompass much of the Europe the Mediterranean Sea area and beyond.

14 Hail Caesar A gap between rich and poor eventually led to a Roman Civil War around 100bc. As the gap continued military problems arose and a leader stepped in to take control Caesar Julius Caesar allied himself with Crassus a wealthy Roman and Pompey a popular general. Calling themselves the Triumvirate they dominated Rome. Caesar eventually led the Roman legions to conquer Gaul (France) and won the loyalty of his men, and popular with the people. In 50bc he was ordered to disband and come home. He did not disband and actually brought his army to Rome to fight Pompey s armies. Pompey fled and was eventually defeated in various places. In 46bc Caesar returned to Rome with support of the people and the army and in 44bc he is given the title dictator for life. However, he begins to make reforms in favor of the avg. people. Nobles and Senators feared his power and changes. So on March 15 th (Beware the Ides of March) they stabbed him to death as he was in the Senate Chamber (Ironically his wife had told him not to go because she had had a dream of him being stabbed the night before) Rome once again had a civil war, but eventually after the whole Mark Anthony and Cleopatra thing, Octavian or Augustus Caesar will be crowned emperor and we see the Pax Romana or Roman Peace
