Life of Moses, Part 6 God Never Wastes an Experience Exodus 2:1-10 Just thought I d drop you a note to clue in on my plans. I ve fallen in love with a guy named Jim. He quit school after the eleventh grade to get married. About a year ago, he got a divorce, but his ex-wife took the children. We ve been together for two months now and plan to get married this summer. Until then, I ve decided to move into his apartment. I sold my car to help him make his mortgage payments. By the way, I m not sure, but I think I may be pregnant. At any rate, I dropped out of college last month but I plan to go back and finish sometime in the future. Mom and Dad, everything I ve written so far is a lie. NONE of it is true. It is true, however, that I got a C in French, a D in Chemistry and my money has run out! Even bad news can look like good news if it s seen from a certain perspective. The secret to living a healthy, functional Christian life is having a biblical perspective on our circumstances. Thutmosis authorized each and every Egyptian citizen to kill on sight each and every Hebrew baby boy. When Moses was born, it was open season on Hebrew baby boys in Egypt. Now a man from the line of Levi married a Levite woman and she became pregnant and gave birth to a son. When she saw that he was a fine child, she hid him for three months. Exodus 2:1 Moses was born in c.1525 B.C. He had an older sister named Miriam He had an older brother named Aaron But when she could hide him no longer, his mother got a papyrus basket for him and coated it with pitch and tar. Then she placed Moses in it and put it among the reeds along the bank of the Nile. His sister (Miriam) stood at a distance to see what would happen. Exodus 2:3, 4 Then Pharaoh s daughter went down to the Nile to bathe and her attendants were walking along the river bank. She saw the basket among the reeds and sent her slave girl to get it. She opened it and saw the baby. He was crying and she felt sorry for him. She said, This is one of the Hebrew babies. Exodus 2:5 The heart of the king is in the hand of the LORD and the LORD turns it wherever He wishes. Proverbs 21:1 Then Moses sister asked Pharaoh s daughter, Shall I go and get one of the Hebrew women to nurse the baby for you? Yes, go, she answered, and the girl went and got the baby s mother. Pharaoh s daughter said to Moses mother, Take this baby and nurse him for me and I will pay you. So the woman took the baby and nursed him. Exodus 2:7 Moses own mother now gets royal permission to nurse and nurture her own son and she gets paid for doing it! Pharaoh s daughter in Exodus 2 was Hatshepsut or as we say Hot Cheap Soup

Picture of Hatshepsut s tomb Picture of a statue of Hatshepsut s

Hatshepsut was the only child of Thutmosis I and his royal wife, Ahmose, to survive to adulthood - - making her the royal heiress to the throne of Egypt. Here in Exodus 2, when Hatshepsut fished Moses out of the Nile, she was somewhere between six and ten years old. When Moses grew older, his mother took him to Pharaoh s daughter and Moses became her son. She named him Moses. Exodus 2:10 Pharaoh s daughter adopted Moses as her own son and moved him into the royal palace, where Moses was treated in every respect as a member of the royal family - - with all the rights and privileges appertaining thereunto. Exodus chapter two gives us the clear impression that during the time of Moses, the Egyptian royal family had a palace along the Nile delta in Goshen where the Israelites lived. Otherwise: How could Pharaoh s daughter come out to bathe right at the spot in Goshen where Moses was? How could Moses (Exodus 2:11) take a stroll one day and end up seeing an Egyptian beating a Hebrew slave? We know that the capital of Egypt during the 18th Dynasty (during the time of Thutmosis I and Moses) was at Memphis - - thirteen miles south of modern day Cairo and almost 100 miles from Goshen.

Picture of what the royal citadel at Rameses may have looked like at the time of Moses Map showing the Nile Delta area with the city of Memphis circled and the area of Tell el-daba circled and the area of Goshen indicated. The citadel found here consisted of two palaces and other buildings occupying some ten acres that were in use during the time Moses was in Egypt in the early 18th Dynasty. Moses quite likely played among these buildings as a child, walked the halls of these palaces as an adult and confronted Pharaoh with God s message, Let my people go!... The discoveries at Tell el-daba strikingly corroborate the accuracy of the Exodus account. Dr. Bryant Wood (The Royal Precinct at Rameses)

The Egyptian royal family had a palace in the Goshen delta - - Right by the Nile River where Pharaoh s daughter could take a bath Right by the Hebrews where Moses could see them on an afternoon stroll Right where the Bible says the palace was! For thousands of years the Bible has been historically correct and contemporary scholarship has been historically wrong. The more then dig out of the ground, the more the Bible proves to be right. Lon Solomon So What? Moses was raised in the royal palace of Egypt Where he was treated as on of the princes of Egypt With all the rights and privileges appertaining thereunto Which included Moses receiving the best education the world had to offer Picture of Dr. Joyce Tyldesley and the following quote: The Household of the Royal Children in Egypt was the most prestigious school in the land. Here young male royals received the instruction which would prepare them for their future lives as some of the highest ranking nobles in the land. Moses was educated in all the wisdom of the Egyptians and became a man who was powerful in speech and action. Acts 7:22 In ancient Egypt, only the royalty was educated. But because of Moses adoption by Hatshepsut - - he was royalty! With the possible exception of Daniel, Moses was the most highly educated and intellectually trained person in the entire Old Testament. Reading and writing so he could write the first five books of the Bible Organizational and administrative skills so he could organize two million people in the desert Jurisprudence skills so he could adjudicate Israel s legal cases Military training so he could mold the Israelites into a fighting force capable of invading and conquering the Promised Land Leadership and command skills so he could lead this motley crew for forty years through the Sinai wilderness In Moses first forty years of life, God wasted nothing that happened to Moses. Every single event played its perfectly designed role to get Moses exactly where he needed to be and to prepare Moses for exactly what God would call him to do. Sitting in the twenty-first century - - with the benefit of hindsight - - we can all see how perfectly God s leading in Moses life was. As followers of Jesus Christ we need to believe: That He has a perfect plan for our life That every event in our life is working together to fulfill that plan That every single detail of our life is under precise, sovereign control For I know the plans I have for you, says the LORD, plans for good and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. Jeremiah 29:11

God never wastes an experience - - whether you and I initially understand that experience or not. Picture of the Old Balls Hill building (pre-1986) One of the distinguishing marks of a true man/woman of God is that person s quiet confidence that God is in complete control.
