3 3 Systems Engineering What is Systems Engineering? Systems Engineering is an interdisciplinary approach and means to enable the realization of successful systems. It focuses on defining customer needs and required functionality early in the development cycle, documenting requirements, then proceeding with design synthesis and system validation while considering the complete problem: Operations Performance Test Manufacturing Cost & Schedule Training & Support Disposal Systems Engineering integrates all the disciplines and specialty groups into a team effort forming a structured development process that proceeds from concept to production to operation. Systems Engineering considers both the business and the technical needs of all customers with the goal of providing a quality product that meets the user needs. Most systems engineers accept the following basic core concepts: Understand the whole problem before you try to solve it Translate the problem into measurable requirements Examine all feasible alternatives before selecting a solution Make sure you consider the total system life cycle. The birth to death concept extends to maintenance, replacement and decommission. If these are not considered in the other tasks, major life cycle costs can be ignored. Increasing technical complexity of systems in general Requirements on cost, quality and lead times Total life-cycle approach being adopted New tools to make the SE approach manageable in practice Evolving standards: IEEE 1220 /2005 ISO/IEC (IEEE) EIA-632 Hundreds of handbooks (but all very generic..) Proven benefits (at least in large projects/organisations ) Great potential but challenges remain

5 5 Systems Engineering and the Real World Current Systems Engineering standards and handbooks typically focus on the product and neglects the operating environment and the network of organisations where the work is really done. Processes need to be implemented across the network and the networks are dynamic and global and multi-x

6 6 Systems Engineering status in Finland Not yet widely adopted as such. Defence industry leads the way urged by defence forces and their networks as customers Growing interest in industry in general, especially when high reliability is required Both external and internal drivers Increasing interest in improved management of requirements Practical implementation partly still lacking Links between requirements, design solutions and validation not well covered ICT infrastructures and design tools are commonly in place Systems Engineering is promoted by Finse ry, the Finnish chapter of INCOSE. Activities are mainly related to the defence industry

7 7 Obstacles to adopting SE Lack of information or success stories from similar industries The process is perceived as complex, laborious and a potential cause of delay Compatibility of tools across the process Difficulties implementing SE in a cooperation network Data security and access rights Required training Distribution of costs and benefits in the value chain How to consider the complete problem and manage the full life-cycle when roles and responsibilities are shared? General concerns How to adopt SE in SME s? Costs and benefits? Tool support? Future compatibility?

9 9 Keys to success Success depends on the ability to create and manage the most effective networks combining the best available knowledge regardless of where its located Projects are formed on an ad hoc basis Mixture of engineering disciplines, cultures and languages Organisation Practices and operating procedures Need for a flexible and adaptable System Engineering framework that suites different project configurations, company profiles and roles. People Knowledge and skills Technology Infrastructure and tools It s more than just technical data.
