SYNTHESIS BUSINESS NEEDS: Importance of SE in Business Key for mastering complexity Satisfying user needs Efficient development Systems of Systems C 4 I centre FIST/IdZ Global (vs. local) optimization Systems complex industrial set-ups Performed on multiple levels from equipment to SoS Interaction between succesive levels Subsystems Equipment TORNADO Jammer DMG EFA-Radar Active Radar STR2000 EuroGrid MILDS Do not distribute without EADS authorization 7
SYNTHESIS BUSINESS NEEDS: Some Challenges Skills & Competence Comprehensive (basic) SE mindset and know-how for Sys Eng (Project Mgt, Procurement) Means to retain SE talents Processes Integrated (Product) Engineering Processes Evolution towards Virtual Product Engineering (M&S) Methods & Tools Early and sound validation of requiremenst Effective methodology for multi-criteria trade-offs and optimization Standardized engineering data model to enable sufficient RoI of tools Do not distribute without EADS authorization 8
EXPECTATIONS REGARDING a COMREHENSIVE APPROACH in SE Strategy Develop a corporate SE strategy Provide a basis and leave room for business specific implementation policies Interfacing / Integrating with other business improvement actions (program management, lean, etc.) Orient and steer corresponding R&T activities Networking for System Engineering experts & stakeholders Share best practices concerning Coordinate EADS s participation in standardization bodies Provide a corporate platform for EADS internal & external benchmarking + partnerships Support the elaboration of an attractive dedicated SE career path Promote SE training (with the possibility of certification) Establish link to business improvement (Lean, Program Management, etc.) Do not distribute without EADS authorization 9
EXAMPLES OF RUNNING ACTIVITIES AND RECENT ACHIEVEMENTS Do not distribute without EADS authorization 10
PEOPLE : Standards Roles Descriptions Systems Engineer mission Called Aircraft Engineering within Airbus Validated by the SESG INCOSE definition chosen as a reference Define and conduct the development of a system / product/ service from requirements definition to operations. Focus on defining customer needs and required functionality early in the development cycle, documenting requirements, then proceeding with design synthesis and system validation while considering the complete problem: operations, cost and schedule, performance, training and support, test, disposal, manufacturing. Systems Engineers interact with : Programme Manager VALIDATED By PM Board Directly responsible for autonomously managing all contractual, commercial, technical, industrial set-up and scheduling aspects of the programme or portfolio. Is accountable for delivery of products, solutions and services on-time, on cost and on quality. The programme manager assumes profit & loss responsibility over the full lifecycle of the product, solution or service and is accountable for the business objectives of customer contracts including customer relationship management Chief Engineer (is a Systems Engineer) Validated by the Lean Op Council Lead the overall design, development & qualification/certification of a product (or a family of products) to satisfy customer and regulatory requirements & programme costs and schedule needs. Responsible for technical definition, engineering deliverables, schedule, costs, quality and risk management aspects.. Do not distribute without EADS authorization 11
PEOPLE : System Engineering Basic Training It is designed for young Engineers with 2 to 4 years experience that are working normally as specialists in specific activity areas who do not have a broad view on the other disciplines needed for designing or implementing a complete complex system. This 4 days training aims at opening their minds to the "big picture approach". Do not distribute without EADS authorization 12
PEOPLE : Systems Engineering external certification To respond to customers requirement and to recognize Systems Engineering competencies, EADS decided in 2008 to certify its experienced Systems Engineers through INCOSE Certified Systems Engineering professional (CSEP) certification. Given that quality, schedule and cost engagement rely on our ability to master and respect Systems Engineering Processes, INCOSE certification will help securing the development of our engineering projects. This external recognition also aims at broadening Systems Engineers competencies, while giving them both internal and external value. The target population is composed by experienced Systems Engineers, above 7 years of experience in Engineering. Through an e-learning module on System lifecycle processes and activities, Systems Engineers will have the opportunity to learn and train before passing the examination (based on the SE Handbook). Agreement signed in 2008 with the International Council on Systems Engineering (INCOSE) that will allow EADS to leverage INCOSE s Certified Systems Engineering Professional (CSEP) programme. Ca 70 engineers already / being certified (ASTRIUM and DS) Do not distribute without EADS authorization 13
PROCESSES : Lean & Systems Engineering ACHIEVEMENTS - Processes : growing use of (INCOSE) SE processes to reengineer overall product development processes Several Divisions already certified CMMI 2/3 - People / skills Common definition of Program Manager / Chief Engineer / System Engineer Training and certification programs running - Tools On-going rationalization of SE tools within BUs and at EADS level R&T activities : MS, MBE ONGOING ACTIVITIES - Business improvement programs base on SE (also lean) principles - Coordinating / Sharing best practices at EADS level (CTO) CQBI : Program Management Improvement Initiatives, Lean, etc. SESG : SE strategy, sharing best practices, standardization, interface to PLM SESG/GIN4 : R&T (lean SE, M&S) PHENIX : PLM processes / tools, interface to SE Lean Product Development Gaps - Lean prerequisite : Effective processes measurement (CMMI) - Upfront Loading - (engineering) Information : production / communication / processing / PULL - Collaboration : Internal / external (Suppliers integration) - Bottom-up / top-down Learning / Improving - Linking all phases of product lifecycle (marketing engineering production operations) Do not distribute without EADS authorization 14
