You will NOT be bothering me, please come see me and get help when you need it! CATALOG DESCRIPTION: This course is intended as a review for students who originally placed into MATH 074 Prealgebra. Topics covered include fractions, decimals, percents, signed numbers, linear equations, ratios and proportions. Students who successfully complete the course will be allowed to retake the Mathematics Placement Test. PREREQUISITE: None COURSE GOALS: This course is intended for students who place into MATH 074 Prealgebra and whose mathematical backgrounds suggest that an intense review of arithmetic, proportion and solving simple linear equations may allow them to succeed in MATH Beginning Algebra. Successful completion of the course is expected to result in students placing into MATH 080, thus saving one semester s work in math. TEXTBOOK AND MATERIALS: 1. Materials will be given daily in class. 2. Students must have a calculator in their possession at all times. Any scientific calculator will be sufficient. GRADING PROCEDURES: FINAL EXAM: Students will retake the placement exam during the last scheduled class session. Students who then place into Math 080 may change their enrollment from Math 074 to Math 080. GRADES: Students who attend every class session (or arrange suitable make up work with me) will receive an S grade in the course. All other students will receive a DR or U. INSTRUCTIONAL POLICIES: PARTICIPATION: Students should attend each class session and actively work on assigned materials. ATTENDANCE: You are expected to be in class every day. Attendance will be taken daily and recorded in WebAdvisor. Any student who misses a class must see me to arrange a suitable make up experience. Students who miss a class and do not turn in agreed upon make-up work will receive a U or DR in the course. (See the Drop Policy.) *** Henry Ford Community College requires students to actively participate in their learning with regular and sustained interaction. Since student success depends on active engagement, students who have NOT attended an entire class session by the College's Never Attended reporting date deadline will not be permitted into the class even if they are already enrolled in the class. All of these students will be assigned a Never Attended grade on their record. 1
2 DROP POLICY: Instructor Policy: Students may drop this class and receive a DR only if they request the grade IN WRITING and IN PERSON from me (legal identification must be presented), using my form, anytime during or before office hours on Wednesday January 23, We will both retain signed copies of the form. Drops are not accepted verbally, by , voice mail, etc. Students who stop attending class will receive a U grade. POLICY ON ACADEMIC INTEGRITY (CHEATING): College Board of Trustees Policy #8500 (adopted 3/17/97):...It shall be the policy of the College that determination of the fact of academic dishonesty by a student shall be a matter of individual judgment by the instructor. The instructor may administer a penalty up to, and including, failure in the particular course... Instructor Policy: Academic dishonesty will not be tolerated in this class. I reserve the right to administer a penalty up to, and including, failure in this course and that includes any student who permits someone to copy from him/her, sharing calculators, using notes, notecards, study sheets, cell phones or any other form of notes that aren t permitted. Furthermore, I will file a letter with the registrar explaining the reason for the U grade. ADVICE: 1. Attend class every day. 2. Find at least one person with whom to study & use the Learning Lab and Assisted Learning for free tutoring. 3. IMPORTANT DATES: January 7 -- Winter semester begins January Late Registration/Schedule Adjustments January Last Day for Refund January Last Day for a No-Record Drop January Martin Luther King Jr. Day College Closed January week classes begin March Spring Break College Closed March Last day to withdraw via WebAdvisor April Final Exams begin May 7 -- Spring Classes Begin MATHEMATICS DIVISION POLICY ON CUT-OFF DATE FOR STUDENT DROP-DOWNS Registered students may only drop-down (move-up) to another full-semester math class within the first three weeks of the Fall and/or Winter Semesters. During the fourth and fifth weeks of the Fall and/or Winter Semesters, registered students may only drop-down (move-up) to a twelve-week course. (In the Spring and/or Summer semesters, students have only one and one-half weeks to drop-down (move-up) to another class.) In order to drop-down (move-up), a student must: 1. Obtain the written permission of his/her current instructor stating that the student was misplaced. 2. See the Math Associate Dean for assistance in finding open sections. The Math Associate Dean will select a section with fewer than 32 students to which to add the student. The Math Associate Dean will exercise due consideration with respect to classroom size and total contractual load. The Math Associate Dean will notify the teacher of the section in a timely manner. 3. The student must then officially file an Add-Drop form at the Registration office. 2

Write a decimal number in scientific notation. 2. Basic operations with fractions 1. Find equivalent fractions to a given fraction. 2. Reduce fractions to lowest terms. 3. Convert between improper fractions and mixed numbers. 4. Add, subtract, multiply and divide fractions including mixed numbers. 3. Fractions, decimals, and percents 1. Convert between the fraction, percent and decimal representation of a rational number. 2. Solve applied percent problems. 4. Linear expressions and equations 1. Solve linear equations in one variable. 2. Evaluate algebraic expressions. 3. Simplify algebraic expressions. 5. Solving proportions 1. Solve a proportion for a missing value. 2. Solve applied problems. 6. Basic operations with signed numbers 1. Add, subtract, multiply, and divide signed numbers. 2. Apply the order of operations to evaluate expressions.
