2 Welcome back Primary 2! I am delighted to inform you that your child has settled very well into the new school session. Here is an indication of what your child will be learning between September and December Primary 2 Numeracy/Maths The children in Primary 2 are working within numbers to 10, 20, 50 and 100. Daily practise of addition and subtraction, both oral and written, will be ongoing. Work on Time will include Months of the Year, Days of the Week and Time Duration. O clock and Half Past both on analogue and digital displays. Shape will include work on 3D shapes and symmetrical patterns. The children will compare and order measurements using non-standard units. Mental Maths. Primary 2 Literacy Opportunities are provided for reading for all children on a daily basis, in particular the story books from the reading scheme and fiction /non-fiction books from the class library. The phonic programme begins with revision of sounds taught last year. New sounds will begin after the revision is completed. Please check your child s weekly homework jotter. The science topic The Seasons provides the basis for writing and talking /listening activities. The children will be encouraged to write their own news independently and opportunities will be provided for a variety of creative writing.
3 Health and Wellbeing In P.E. we will be concentrating on Games skills followed by Fitness and Dance. P.E. is timetabled for Primary 2 on Monday mornings and Friday afternoons. Please provide your child with a gym bag containing a white t-shirt, maroon shorts and gym shoes. These items can be purchased from the school office and should remain in school. The Health and Wellbeing Programme is as follows; Food that keeps us Healthy Food technology preparing simple healthy food and drink. Exercise Dental Hygiene Keeping Safe Tooth brushing will start in September for Primary 2. Skills Throughout all areas of the curriculum, the skills we will be focusing on from September until Christmas will centre on the capacities of Responsible Citizens and Effective Contributors. Examples of work covered in these areas will feature in your child s learning log. R.M.E The children are learning/revising the Hail Mary, Our Father and Glory Be to the Father prayers. They will learn about: Creation in The Seasons topic through art, stories and hymns. God speaking to us through the stories of the Bible. Stories of the Saints.
4 Advent and all aspects of the Christmas story throughout December. God s Loving Plan The programme will include the following: Living things where they come from and about how they grow, develop and are nurtured. People who care for and look after us. Awareness of the tasks required to look after a baby. French Revise Topic Areas: Greetings and Salutations Names Numbers Introduce Topic Areas: Colours Likes and Dislikes Pets Christmas Expressive Arts Art and Design activities will include: Expressive picture making/wall displays Drawing, painting and collage using a variety of media. Christmas activities Drama activities will include: Role play using movement and expression through stories/ poems/songs. Practise and performance on stage at our P1-3 Christmas concert. Music:
5 The children will benefit from weekly music lessons and hymns with our music specialist Mrs McMurtrie. Homework Please try and allow a special time for homework where your child can work without interruption. Homework is designed to consolidate work already taught in class. No new concepts are sent home for homework. Homework for Primary 2 will be as follows: Reading: Ginn Reading programme. Please read details in reading record. Words: Word book given out on a Monday to be returned the following Friday. Please revise words and sounds every night. Homework jotter: Weekly Numeracy and Phonics homework given on a Monday to be returned before the following Friday. Please ensure your child s reading book, reading record and word book are returned to school every day, as they are used in class. Please sign all homework.
