God is always the initiator in the history of our creation and redemption; it is in his revealing of himself that makes classroom religious education possible. Revelation Life in Jesus Church Celebration (The Way, The Truth and The Life, Teacher Book, CTS Religious Education) At St. Fidelis Catholic Primary School we want to encourage everyone to grow in confidence to achieve their full potential academically, morally, socially and spiritually. The subject of Religion has an intrinsic role in this through the development of the whole child. Broad Aim To nurture in children a love of Religion and their faith and an enthusiasm to enable them to flourish and share this learning beyond St. Fidelis. As a Catholic school we have 5 broad aims: educating the whole person, educating all children, seeking, encourgaging and respecting the uniqueness of the individual, searching for excellence in everything we do developing and enhancing sound moral principles. These aims contribute to our vision and enable us to fulfil the criteria of our mission statement: excellence, compassion and challenge. 1. Our Faith For faith to be alive we must be active participants, because of this it is intergral to every part of school life. We do this through weekly planned reflection (see appendix), bible study (to develop our knowledge and understanding of scripture), assemblies, shared hymn practices, the way we act and behave towards each other and through well planned and 1

2 executed Religion lessons. We believe that we need to look for and see Christ in everyone and act like Christ ourselves. Curriculum At St Fidelis the curriculum follows the The Way, The Truth and The Life scheme. This enables the children to fully explore the different areas in the Catholic faith and the need for guided and planned spirtual reflection, keeping close to the teachings and expectations laid out by the Bishop and The Catechism. Expectations In Religion the children must strive for excellence in a challenging learning environment. To enable this teachers will offer the opportunity for every child to reach their full potential through differentiated activities tailored to the individuals needs and abilities. ICT ICT will be incorporated effectively within lessons with opportunities for all children to enhance learning and utilise their existing skills where appropriate. Assessment The purpose of assessment in Religion is to enable the children to develop their knowledge and understanding of their faith so they can achieve to the best of their ability. It will be carried out formally once a term and through regular written and verbal feedback. It will be monitored regularly by the Religion Leader through book sampling, planning scrutiny, learning walks and pupil interviews. The assessment information will be used to inform planning to challenge children and enable teachers to maintain a high standard of teaching and learning. Quality Assurance Quality Assurance of Religion provision will take place to ensure a high standard of teaching and learning is taking place across the school from the Foundation Stage to Key Stage 2. It will take the form of learning walks, pupil interviews, planning scrutiny, formal and informal observations, book sampling and staff development. This will be planned and documented on the Religion action plan and findings collated in the subject leader s file. Other Faiths It is important that children learn to respect and appreciate that people may have chosen another faith and it is therefore essential that we educate children in what these people believe and practice. The faiths we cover are Sikhism, Islam, Judaism, Hinduism and other Christian denominations. We focus on Judaism for two weeks a year during the Autumn term as this is the foundation of Catholisism; in the Summer Term we spend two weeks on two other faiths, varying in different year groups (see appendix). 2
