4 WELCOME Dear Parents & Guardians, Welcome to the Township of Scugog Day Camp programs. We have some great opportunities planned and look forward to working with both you and your child. This parent handbook is your guide to assist us in providing the best experience possible for your child this summer. Please take the time to review the handbook and keep it on hand throughout the summer as an information resource. We believe that summer camp provides your child with the opportunity for healthy growth, personal development and a great way to make friends. Our programs are designed to be age appropriate, safe and have fun! To ensure the programs are of the highest quality, we incorporate the HIGH FIVE principles of healthy child development into all program designs. As well as incorporate CATCH (Coordinated Approach to Childhood Health) into our lessons. We see parents as partners in this summer adventure and welcome your suggestions and comments. Please introduce yourself to our program staff and get to know them. Each of our staff has been carefully selected based on their skills, talents and commitment to healthy child development. They will be happy to answer any questions you may have. Please feel free to give us a call or should you have any questions. Sincerely, Tanya Budgen Recreation Coordinator ext. 101 tbudgen@scugog.ca 4 The Summer Camp Staff of 2016 would like to thank you for your continued support and we look forward to seeing you and your child(ren) at our Recreational Programs, Christmas and March Break Camp! 13

We STRIVE to be NUT-FREE Scugog Camps provide and support a nut-sensitive environment at camp. Staff require that all children participating within our summer camp programs maintain safe lunches and snacks daily to respect our friends at camp. Parents are asked to review all food labels prior to packing lunches to ensure we provide a safe environment for all of our children at camp. Money and Valuables Participants are allowed to bring up to $20 on trip days. However the Camp Leaders are not responsible for this money. Please put the money in a Ziploc baggie with your child s name on it. Access to vending machines and concession will not be allowed during program time. If a participant rides their bike to camp, it is the individuals responsibility to ensure the bike is left in a secure location during camp hours. We appreciate your co-operation. EXPLORE. LEARN. PLAY. HIGH FIVE The Best Way to Play The Township of Scugog Recreation department is committed to providing quality programming for children & youth. As part of the Township of Scugog Recreation Division, we are a registered member of Parks and Recreation Ontario s HIGH FIVE Program. HIGH FIVE is built on the belief that all children deserve to have sport and recreation experience that support his or her healthy development. Positive experiences in sport and recreation help children become capable, caring adults who contribute more effectively to the community in the future. Why would you choose any other program for your child? Visit the HIGH FIVE website to learn more about this fantastic quality assurance program - Principles of Healthy Child Development A Caring Adult Acts as a positive role model and allows the children to feel comfortable to challenge themselves. Play Encourages creativity, cooperation and FUN! Friends Create a safe environment where children can learn to be a part of a team, and feel welcome to discuss their feelings, learn new skills, and work out conflicts. Participation Involves children in the planning and implementation of activities, helping them feel involved, independent, and competent. Mastery Develops self-esteem and positive identity in children. 12 5

6 OUR TEAM Program Leader Qualifications A caring leader is an essential component in ensuring a positive day camp experience for your child. You will take comfort in knowing that all summer staff go through a screening process including two interviews, reference checks, and criminal record checks. As part of Scugog s commitment to the HIGH FIVE Quality Assurance Process all of our leadership staff are certified in HIGH FIVE Principles of Healthy Child Development. This provincial training program focuses on understanding child behaviour, problem solving, planning special events, working with children who have extra support needs, emergency procedures, as well as, practical experience leading games, crafts, and songs. Many of our leaders also have specialized experience in coaching and/or sport instruction. Summer Camp Contact If you have any concerns or suggestions regarding any aspect of our program throughout the summer, please do not hesitate to contact the Camp Supervisor or the Recreation Coordinator. Tanya Budgen Recreation Coordinator Kelsey Grove, Camp Supervisor Michelle Rahm, Camp Supervisor Phone: ext tbudgen@scugog.ca Supervision Ratios Our staff/camper ratios reflect our commitment to safe, high quality program supervision. Camps will operate a 1:5 ratio, 1:8, 1:1, 1:12, and 1:15. 6 Summer Camp Evaluation Both campers and parents will have the opportunity to fill out an evaluation regarding their experience with Scugog Camps. Your input is important to improving services and providing the highest quality experience for the children and parents involved. 7 Weekly Schedules We want you to know what we ll be doing! On the Monday of each week, program plans will be available for you to pick up. If you have any specific questions regarding program planning please see the Camp Supervisor. Lost and Found Lost and found items will be laid out each morning upon arrival to camp. Any items not claimed by summer s end will be donated to charity. Sunscreen Policy We are all concerned with the damaging effects of UVA and UVB ultra-violet rays. For this reason, we request that all parents send sunscreen, sunglasses and hats with their campers. Program leaders will check to ensure campers are wearing sunscreen prior to going outside. We can provide sunscreen but require written permission from the parent & guardian of the child to apply it. Opening & Closing Ceremonies Each morning campers will participate in a variety of activities to get them excited and energized for their day. Sports Camp will run their own opening ceremonies on Tuesday and Thursday. The schedule is as follows: S.M.I.L.E Award -Monday: Camp Wide Games -Tuesday: Singing Songs -Wednesday: Counsellor Challenge -Thursday: Group Skits -Friday: Fun Fitness The SMILE Award (Summer Campers Making Individual Lives Excellent) is given to one camper in each group who participates in activities, shows enthusiasm, energy, kindness, sincerity, co-operation etc... on a daily basis. Staff will choose from their camp squad and campers will be awarded their certificate. Everyday we were met with huge smiles. They knew every child by name! The staff s enthusiasm and energy was simply astounding. As a parent, I appreciated that my son had a fun-filled summer, making new friends and enjoying so many new experiences. S.V Program Hours General Camps 9am-4:30pm Camp Swimming Lessons 8am-9am On a regular camp day please drop-off your child at 9am and pick up your child at 4:30pm. After 4:45pm participants can be picked up from after care. If your child arrives early or is picked-up late on more than one occasion, you will be asked to register them in our before and after camp program. Before and After Care Supervision is available before camp from 7:30am to 9am and after camp from 4:30pm to 6pm. Sign In & Sign Out Your children must be signed in and out by their approved escort each day. With your written permission, participants aged 9+ who come and go on their own to camp can sign themselves in and out. Please inform Program Leaders in advance if your child is unable to attend camp. We will follow up with a phone call if an expected participant has not arrived. Absent Campers It is important for us to know if your child is unable to attend camp one day. Please send a note with your child, so we can advise his/her leader. If your child is ill, please call ext. 110 to advise us that they will not be attending. 10 7

8 Medication and Epi-Pens If you require medication to be given to your child during the program, an additional form (Authorization for Administration of Medication) must be completed. These forms are available from the program site or can be ed upon request. Medication must be stored in the original container with directions for administration on the label. Only medications prescribed by a physician will be considered for administration by the on site Camp Supervisor. Staff do not actually administer medications but will supervise participants capable of administering their own. In case of a life threatening situation where the participant carries medication such as an Epi-pen or asthma inhaler, should the participant be unable to administer the dosage, staff will assist in administering the medication. Participants MUST keep Epi-Pens on them at all times. We recommend a fanny pack for around their waist. Behaviour Management Policy Campers are expected to behave appropriately while in the care of programs they are participating in. We have these expectations in place to ensure that all participants are permitted to appreciate a positive and rewarding camp experience. It is also a necessary requirement of participants to behave appropriately: -Respect for themselves -Respect for the property -Respect for others -Positive camp participation in all activities -To be safe and have fun! Children with Extra Support Needs We strive to ensure the successful and safe participation of all campers in our camps. If your child has extra support needs or a health condition we ask for your help in letting us know upon registration. If your camper is going to be accompanied by a recreation integration worker please contact us at ext. 101 to discuss how we can best provide the support your camper needs. Emergency Procedures Your child s safety is our number one priority. We believe that hazard elimination is the key to prevention. Our program leaders are trained to inspect program sites daily for any potential hazards. Activities and games are planned with participant safety in mind and are always watched to ensure that safety standards are maintained. All program sites have access to a telephone and leaders carry a first aid kit. As mentioned earlier, all program leaders have current Standard First Aid and CPR B or C certification. In the event of a minor injury to your child (scraped knee, etc), Leaders will apply basic first aid and will notify you at the end of the day. In the unlikely event of a serious injury, emergency services will be called immediately to respond to the situation. You will be contacted immediately with information regarding the incident. If an ambulance is required to transport your child to the hospital, the on site supervisor will accompany your child. Participant Safety While campers are attending Scugog Camps, our staff s primary objective is to ensure that participants have a happy and safe recreational experience. Please be aware that our staff are legally obligated to observe the terms of the Ontario Child and Family Services Act. Our staff receive training on protocol principles to follow regarding established legislation and standards with respect to the reporting of a child in need of protection. 8 9
