We have our Big Exhibition on Thursday 30 th June, this year s theme is the British Monarchy. Events start from 12 noon with our family picnic, and afterwards the opportunity to explore the exhibition with your child. The home learning activity for the exhibition has been sent home I hope you enjoy the chance to work with your children to create something stunning! I hope the weather is fine for Sports Day on Friday 8 th July. If it does rain and the ground becomes slippery, we may need to use our back up date of Monday 11 th July. All the dates for school events are on the updated diary sheet attached. Please replace the previous copy with this one. If you have any questions about any of the events, please ring or call in the school office where the team will be happy to help. Secondary Transition Year 6 Parents Your child will soon be moving on to Secondary School in September. They may be excited or worried... but how are YOU feeling and how best can you support your child? The Bracknell Forest Family Learning Team have put together a short workshop for Year 6 parents to receive some support and help for a smooth transition from Primary to Secondary school. The session covers: Practical things to do to be ready and organised Tips and advice from 'been there, done that!' parents who have been through it Discussion of common concerns and ways to overcome them. Sessions will be here at the school. Session 1: Thursday 16th June 9:00-10:00 am OR Session 2 on Thursday 7 th July: 6:30-7:30 pm (That s the second day of your child s visit to their new school) Please let your child's class teacher know which one you can attend. Please do try to attend or Bracknell may not provide these sessions in the future!
2 Parents having fun in school What a lovely time we all had on our year 1 maths mornings! Mums, Dads and other family members came to join us. It was GREAT! The children were so excited and enjoyed making, then playing, their maths game. (I think the adults did too!) They learned so much and took home a pack with 100 other games they can play using their hundred square. We had a huge response. Almost all the children had an adult working with them. Thank you so much for making this such a wonderful success. We are holding a similar maths morning for Year 2 on July 5 th and 6 th and hope this is just as brilliant. For those unable to attend or for more information the presentations used are on our website. Mrs York Foundation Stage Family Bake Off Fun Through the fun of food, our children and families in Miss Jones class today enhanced their learning skills in a cookery session. The families made witches cauldrons with cucumbers as well as crispy cakes. The adults and children had fun together. We were all amazed at how the children were happy to try new ingredients and explore new foods.
3 Year 6 First Aid Training On Monday 13 th June, St John Ambulance came into school to train our Year 6 pupils as first aiders. The children did brilliantly with the five-hour course learning the role of a first aider. They learnt the following: DR.ABC - Danger, Response, Airway, Breathing and Circulation. First Aid tips and advice can be found at the following address. Our Local Library Simon, the Librarian, has started a book group every Friday afternoon. Our Year 6 pupils are loving reading and discussing I am NOT a Loser by Jim Smith. Keep up the reading at home and pop into your local library. Great Hollands Library Opening Hours are: Wednesday: 9:30am to 12:30pm and 2pm to 7pm Friday: 9:30am to 12:30pm and 2pm to 5pm Saturday: 9:30am to 12:30pm Igniting Writing Alex Baker, creative writing genius, develops creative writing activities on everything from creating characters to sci-fi. We were lucky enough for him to visit. Yesterday afternoon Alex Baker, who runs creative writing classes at Wokingham Library, visited our Year 6 pupils and came to ignite our writing! He came to help us develop characters. We had a wonderful time and we learned how to make our characters more interesting. A great tip for writing narrative is to focus on your characters first and then focus on the next techniques. Igniting Writing meets at the library in Denmark Street on Saturdays from 10.30am to midday and is open to 11-to-18-year-olds Dame Evelyn Glennie Celebrating Classical Music Alive in Reading 2016! On Wednesday 8th of June a group of Year 6 pupils went to the Hexagon Theatre in Reading to watch the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Evelyn Glennie perform a number of amazing classical pieces. We were so amazed by how magical and skilful she was when she was playing. We were sitting in the front row and were so close. We could even see her toes wiggling, we had learned that as she was deaf she feels the vibrations of sounds through her feet. At the end of the concert we were lucky enough to meet her and we told her that we had been researching her amazing life and listening and watching clips of her worldwide performances. Evelyn was so lovely, she spent time talking to us and autographed every ticket. She even demonstrated with Rhiannon's Malteser wrapper how you could get good sounds out of it by investigating the crinkle! By Year 6
4 Summer play in our fabulous grounds. In between the showers, I have been out on the Year 3 and 4 playgrounds and I thought I would share some pictures of the activities the children were up to. We are very lucky to have such a wide variety of areas for the children to play in and lots of play equipment too. The children were having a lot of fun. Every day children can choose between lots of activities as well as structured games led by the Year 6 games leaders. Building Update from Mr Baker I have grown into a toddler. As you can see, much about me has changed, both the structure of the roof in the discovery centre and the nursery are well on the way to making the buildings water tight. The Discovery Centre roof Prior to the half term and during with the support of both staff and children in Years 1 and 2 the builders were able to complete the changes needed internally in order to separate the discovery centre from the corridor with the new walls required. The view to the inside the discovery centre The new nursery building is fast taking shape and will soon be ready for our children to enter and explore. By Mr Baker

General Reminders Please remember to call and leave a message ( Option 1) if your child is unwell and unable to attend school. If we do not have a reason for your child s absence it will be marked as unauthorised. Please check that your child s items are clearly labelled Please do not bring any nuts into school Dogs are not permitted anywhere on the school site and must not be left near school gates If you cycle to school please walk your bike on the school site and remember to LOCK it up Please walk scooters when on the school playgrounds Children need the correct PE kit - dark blue or black shorts and a white T-shirt or polo shirt please Thank you for your continued support and feedback.
