1 Associate Degree in Nursing Program Information Read through the following presentation to obtain a better understanding of the Associate Degree in Nursing program offered at Mt. San Jacinto College. Mission Statement: The mission of the Associate of Science Degree Nursing Program is to prepare entry-level registered nurses as providers of care across the health/illness continuum and as members within the profession. The program respects the individuality of students and recognizes that each student has different educational, experiential, cultural, spiritual, economic, and social backgrounds and a unique support system. The aim of the curriculum is to provide a positive, innovative learning model that fosters the development of critical thinking and problem solving skills so that the graduate is equipped to deliver care to culturally diverse populations in a variety of healthcare settings. Graduates will collaborate with members of the healthcare team, be effective communicators, be politically aware, and demonstrate a commitment to lifelong learning.

2 What is Registered Nursing? As a Registered Nurse, some of your responsibilities could include: Treat patients Educate patients Provide recommendations Provide emotional support Record medical histories and symptoms Perform diagnostic tests and analyze results Operate medical machinery Administer treatment and medication Teach patients how to manage injuries or illnesses Teach effective practices of nutrition, diet, and exercise Establish care plans for patients Start/Continue/Discontinue IV lines Consult with physicians and other healthcare clinicians Help with patient follow-up and rehabilitation *Taken from the Occupational Outlook Handbook, Edition

3 Associate Degree in Nursing Program The Associate of Science Degree in Nursing Program is accredited by the California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN). Upon completion of the 78 unit program, the graduate earns an Associate of Science Degree in Nursing and is eligible to apply for the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN) for licensure as a Registered Nurse. The Associate of Science Degree in Nursing Program (ADN) is four semesters (2 years) after the completion of program prerequisites. 42 semester units Classes are typically taught during the morning and afternoon Clinical days can range from 8 to 12 hours

4 Associate Degree in Nursing Program Admission Requirements All courses must be completed with a grade of C or better. All courses must be completed before application to program. Cumulative GPA of a 2.5 or higher in the following courses is required for admission: ANAT 101- Anatomy and Physiology I ANAT 102- Anatomy and Physiology II BIOL 125- General Microbiology MATH 096- Intermediate Algebra or higher ENGL 101- Freshman Composition 5 semester units 5 semester units 5 semester units 5 semester units 4 semester units ANAT 101, ANAT 102 and BIOL 125 have a 7-year recency requirement. Recency may be acquired by taking Special Projects 299. Please see a counselor for more information. BIOL 125 requires completion of CHEM 100 or 107 and ANAT 101 with a grade of C or better before registration. Note: Meeting admission criteria for the program does not guarantee admission into the program. Please continue reading to learn about the selection process.

PSYC 101- Introduction to Psychology 3 semester units PS 101- Introduction to American Government and Politics 3 semester units COMM 100 or 103- Public Speaking or Interpersonal Communication 3 semester units Humanities (Area C)* Multicultural Gender Studies (Area F)* 3 semester units *Requirement may be satisfied with one course by selecting one course from the following: ART 104, ASL 110; DAN 100, 201; ENGL 205, 240, 250, 260, 270, 280, 285, 286; HIST 103, 104, 106, 107, 108, 115, 126, 127, 136, 140, 151, 160; MUS 106, 108,109; SPAN 270; THA 136 Note: The Additional General Education Requirements listed above are not required for admission to the ADN program, however they are required for completion of the Associate of Science Degree in Nursing. It is highly recommended that students complete these requirements before entering the ADN program due to the rigorous nursing student course load.

6 Admission to Program Only students who have completed the admission requirements with a 2.5 GPA or higher by the application deadline will be considered for selection. Students must receive approval from the Nursing and Allied Health Department before applying to the Associate of Science Degree in Nursing Program This is obtained through the Transcript Evaluation and/or Prerequisite Clearance Form The Associate of Science Degree in Nursing Program is now using a Multi-Selection Criteria and Ranking process for student selection due to changes in state law (AB 1559 & SB 1393). Applicants with the highest ranking will be notified by student 4-6 weeks after the close of the application period. Admission will be offered to the highest ranking applicants whose documentation supports information provided in the application. No Waitlist is Maintained.

7 Transcript Requirements In order to apply to the ADN Program: Official transcripts from all colleges attended must be submitted to Enrollment Services at Mt. San Jacinto College. Following submission, you must request to have these transcripts evaluated for admission to the Nursing Program, using the Transcript Evaluation Form. Transcript Evaluation Form can be found at: Foreign Transcripts including high school documentation must be formally evaluated by the Transcript Evaluation Services, Los Angeles, or the American Education Research Center, West Covina and then evaluated by a MSJC evaluator for course equivalency. See Counseling office for details and transcript evaluation applications. 8 Nursing Prerequisite Clearance Students completing all of their coursework at MSJC need to submit a request for Nursing Prerequisite Clearance to Enrollment Services in order to apply to the ADN program. 11 Requirements Before Start of Program All Nursing Applicants Must: Have a valid United States Social Security Number (SSN) to be admitted to the Nursing Program. A valid SSN is required for licensure. Have a CLEAR criminal background and drug screen to participate in clinical training. The background check, drug screen and SSN requirements are mandatory requirements of hospitals and clinics where students do clinical training and cannot be waived. Students are not required to complete background check, drug screening and health clearance until admitted to program. Have a valid CPR card and health clearance prior to enrollment. Have a passing score on the Diagnostic Readiness Assessment, TEAS Assessment Tool.

12 Students Selected Number of Students Selected Fall Semester- 12 students Spring Semester- 24 students Provisional Acceptance is Based on Completion of the Following: CPR Card- American Heart Association Health Care Provider Physical Exam Clearance and Vaccination History/Titers Background Check Clearance Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS)- Passing score of 62% Final selection is conditional on the student submitting a clear background check, a satisfactory physical exam, and American Hearth Association Healthcare Provider CPR certification and a passing score on the Diagnostic Readiness Assessment, the Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS). The student s composite score will be added to the admission criteria ranking.

13 TEAS Testing The Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) is an assessment tool administered to ADN program applicants. It is an assessment of Math, English, Reading and Science knowledge and requires a cumulative passing score of 62% on the TEAS V. The test will be given to applicants who are notified of provisional acceptance based upon their points in the Multi-Selection Criteria. The results of the TEAS V test will be added to the accumulated points for final review for program selection. Only the first passing score of the TEAS V will be accepted. Students who have previously taken the TEAS test and have successfully passed should request their scores to be electronically transmitted to MSJC by contacting:

14 Application Filing Periods Spring Semester September 1- September 15 Fall Semester February 1- February 15 Applications must be received in the Nursing and Allied Health Department by final filing date, located in Building 500. No late applications will be accepted.

15 Program Costs Approximate Expenses (Subject to Changes): 1. Students pay for tuition, ASB card and a parking permit as stated in the current college catalog. 2. Nursing uniforms are purchased through a uniform company, designated by the Nursing and Allied Health Department- $ Nursing textbooks and supplies- $2000 for entire program 4. CPR course- $40- $60 5. Physical Examination/Laboratory Tests- $ Tracking Service for Immunization Clearance- $10 7. Background Clearance- $60 8. Licensing Board Applications- $300- $ Liability Insurance covering students is provided by the college at no cost to the student (However, students are strongly encourage to carry their own). 10. ATI Testing- $500-$ Student Tote Supply Fee- $ first and third semester When planning expenses, students should be aware they may have to limit their hours of employment, due to extensive RN Program Requirements. Scholarships, grants, and loans are available to those students who qualify through the MSJC Financial Aid Office.

16 How Do I Get Started? 1. Apply for Admission to Mt. San Jacinto College 2. Complete MSJC s Online Orientation and Assessment 3. Attend an Optional Advising Session Bring official transcripts with you to your counseling appointment 4. Submit proof of High School Diploma, GED, California Proficiency Exam, or College Degree and all college transcripts to Enrollment Services 5. Continue to check student and department website for updates 6. Complete Prerequisite Courses with at least a 2.5 Cumulative GPA Obtain a Transcript Evaluation/Prerequisite Clearance Form and submit to Enrollment Services once prerequisites are completed 7. Obtain an application form from the Nursing and Allied Health Department during the application filing period
