1 Copper Mountain College Registered Nursing Program ADMISSION POLICY The Copper Mountain College Registered Nursing Program offers an Associate of Science Degree (ASD) Registered Nursing (RN). The Registered Nursing Program is approved by the California State Board of Registered Nursing (BRN). Note: The following application criteria and admission process becomes effective for all applicants admitted or who begin RN Program courses after November 1, REQUIREMENTS FOR APPLICATION TO THE RN PROGRAM A. All prerequisite courses required for the ASD-RN must be completed within seven (7) years of application for admission to the Program. B. All prerequisite coursework must be completed with a grade of C (2.0 GPA) or better and all co-requisite coursework must be completed with a grade of C (2.0 GPA) or better. All college level attempts at courses taken at any accredited school will be used to calculate the GPA, including those with a grade of I, W, D and/or F. C. Proof of high school graduation or equivalency, which is demonstrated by providing official evidence of any of the following: A USA high school diploma or an Associate Degree or higher college degree or their foreign equivalent or official evidence of a passing score on the California High School Proficiency Examinations or a GED certificate. Foreign high school diplomas or college degrees must be evaluated and determined to be equivalent by an international evaluation service approved by Copper Mountain College (CMC). Schedule an appointment with a CMC counselor for details regarding the foreign transcript evaluation process. D. Official transcripts must be submitted for ALL college coursework attempted or completed at any college and must be presented at the time of application to the RN Program. It is the applicant s responsibility to provide official transcripts, official diplomas and any requested evidence of meeting all admission criteria. Page 1 of 13

3 RN PROGRAM GENERIC APPLICATION PROCESS The Application form and instructions for application submission are posted on the CMC website ( on the Health Sciences/Nursing Programs (HSNP) page. GENERIC ADMISSION SELECTION PROCESS AND PRIORITY Generic Admissions: Twenty-four applicants are accepted for admission to the Program beginning each Fall semester. Because the number of applicants exceeds the number of seats available in the Program and because it is in the best interests of applicant success, the following process is used to screen applicants for Program admission. A. Applications for generic admission are accepted from November 1 st through November 15 th each year. Applications must be hand carried to the HSNP office Monday through Friday from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm during that period. Only complete applications hand carried to the HSNP office within the application period will be accepted for consideration. B. After the application period has ended, each application will be screened for evidence of completion of all prerequisite coursework and evaluated using the Chancellor s Office Predictor of Success Formula (Community College Nursing Prerequisite Validation Study). All prerequisite coursework must be completed within seven (7) years of application for admission to the Program. Applicants are required to meet the minimum score of seventy (70) on the Formula to be considered for admission. Data elements entered into the Formula are: Grade Point Average (GPA) from all colleges attended GPA in all English coursework GPA in sciences: Microbiology, Anatomy and Physiology The number of times Microbiology, Anatomy or Physiology courses have been repeated within the seven (7) years prior to application for admission (repeats after a withdrawal have the same negative impact as do repeats after a failure). C. Applicants will be ranked in order of Formula score and the thirty six (36) applicants receiving the highest Formula scores will be offered conditional admission. Applicants who are offered conditional admission are notified via e- mail. Failure to respond within seven days results in removal of the applicant from consideration and the next qualified applicant will be given the opportunity of conditional admission. When there are thirty six (36) qualified applicants who accept the offer of conditional admission, the remaining applicants will be notified that they will not be considered for admission. Page 3 of 13
4 D. Applicants who have been dismissed from any Allied Health/Health Sciences/ Nursing Program at any school for the following reasons may be ineligible for admission to the CMC RN Program: Unsafe clinical performance Acts of dishonesty or unethical behavior Violation of program professional conduct standards. E. The RN Program requires a criminal background check. Applicants who have a felony on their background check are ineligible for admission to the Program. Applicants who have a misdemeanor on their background check may be ineligible for admission to the Program. F. In the event that there are fewer than thirty-six (36) applicants with a minimum score of seventy (70) on the Formula, applicants with lower scores may be considered for admission. G. The thirty six (36) conditionally admitted applicants must then produce proof of achieving a passing Composite Score of 67 on the TEAS 4.0 taken at another location between June 2010 and December 2010, or take the TEAS V examination at CMC on the scheduled date and time and achieve a Composite Score of 62. Twenty four (24) applicants who achieve the highest Predictor of Success formula scores and who achieve a passing TEAS examination Composite Score are confirmed for admission with the condition that they meet all additional Program entry requirements including health, immunization, criminal background check and CPR certification. In the event there are more than twenty four (24) conditionally admitted applicants, the first twenty-four conditionally admitted applicants will be admitted and the remaining applicants will be placed on a waitlist for priority admission in the following Fall semester. H. Applicants who do not achieve a passing TEAS examination score are required to enter into a plan of remediation and re-testing. If these requirements are not met, the applicant will not be considered for admission. I. The waitlist will only be maintained until the following year. Waitlisted applicants who fail to respond to an offer of admission or decline admission are removed from the waitlist and must complete the entire application and screening process if they wish to be considered for admission in the future. 5 ADVANCED PLACEMENT APPLICANTS It is the policy of the CMC RN Program to accept Advanced Placement (transfer) applicants from other accredited institutions of higher education when seats are available. A. The RN Program accepts courses transferred to the College from accredited US colleges and universities. B. The RN Program accepts courses transferred to the College from foreign colleges and universities if they have been evaluated by an approved Foreign Transcript Evaluator and accepted by the College. (See policy in College catalog.) C. The RN Program accepts nursing courses from other accredited nursing programs in the US if these courses are determined by the Program Director and have been confirmed through the CMC process to be equivalent. D. Nursing courses taken in foreign colleges are not accepted. ADVANCED PLACEMENT ADMISSION SELECTION PROCESS AND PRIORITY It is the goal of the CMC RN Program to continuously keep all Program seats filled in order to educate the largest number of potential Registered Nurses possible. With this goal in mind, there may be a number of LVN to RN applicants admitted when possible and any seats vacated through attrition of generic applicants may be filled with Advanced Placement (AP) applicants. However, the Program Director can determine that vacant seats will not be filled, even in the presence of qualified AP applicants, if it is deemed to be in the best interests of existing students and Program success. AP applicants must meet all requirements as described in the LVN to RN Option I or II requirements if they are currently a California Licensed Vocational Nurse, or must meet all generic admission requirements and have transferrable prior Registered Nursing coursework or equivalent experience as confirmed by the Program Director. An applicant who wants to be considered for advanced placement must submit the AP Application form along with official transcripts showing ALL prior college coursework and an explanation of the reason for exiting from the prior RN Program (use the form in this policy). Applicants who have been dismissed from any Allied Health/Health Sciences/ Nursing Program at any school for the following reasons may be ineligible for admission to the CMC RN Program: Unsafe clinical performance Page 5 of 13
6 Acts of dishonesty or unethical behavior Violation of program professional conduct standards. The RN Program requires a criminal background check. Applicants who have a felony on their background check are ineligible for admission to the Program. Applicants who have a misdemeanor on their background check may be ineligible for admission to the Program. AP applicants may be admitted to any increment of the Program if they meet the prerequisite coursework and other requirements and are deemed to be adequately prepared to ensure their success in the Program. The following order of priority will be used to determine admission selection for AP applicants: First Semester (N001A or N001B) 1. Returning students who left passing 2. Returning students who left failing 3. Transfer applicants who left passing and/or LVN wishing to enter program 4. Transfers who failed last nursing course 5.
