SAN JACINTO COLLEGE Menifee Valley Campus La Piedra Road Menifee, CA (951) Nursing and Allied Health Unit Associate of Science Degree Registered Nursing Program Information Brochure Program Mission Statement The Mission of the Associate Degree Nursing Program is to prepare entry level registered nurses to function effectively within nursing and inter-professional teams. These graduates will deliver evidence based patient centered care to culturally diverse populations across the life span in a variety of healthcare settings. Graduates will be effective communicators and demonstrate a commitment to lifelong learning utilizing informatics resources. We respect the individuality of students and recognize that each student has different learning styles, diverse backgrounds, and unique support systems. The goal of the program is to promote student success in a positive, innovative learning environment that promotes continuous quality improvement, empowers students to develop critical thinking skills, professional attitudes to ensure safe practice, clinical reasoning, and decision making that result in positive patient outcomes. 2 General Information The Associate of Science Degree in Nursing Program is accredited by the California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN). It requires four semesters of study after the completion of prerequisite courses and admission requirements. Upon completion of the 78 unit program, the graduate earns an Associate of Science Degree in Nursing, and is eligible to apply for the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN) for licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of California. Due to changes in State funding, the number of students accepted into The Associate of Science Degree in Nursing Program will vary. The MSJC Associate Degree Nursing Program will implement a once a year admission cycle beginning Fall 2013 and continue thereafter. In anticipation of the Cal State San Marcos RN-BSN collaboration endeavor, students applying to MSJC's ADN Program in Fall 2013 and thereafter, may be required to enroll in additional prerequisites prior to acceptance. Program Requirements Note: Meeting admission requirements for the program does not guarantee admission into the Associate Degree in Nursing Program. Please see the Multi-Criteria Selection provided at the end of this brochure for additional information about the selection process. The following must be met prior to the application deadlines. 1. Admission to Mt. San Jacinto College. 2. Completion of orientation, assessment, and optional advising session. 3. Proof of High School Diploma, G.E.D. California Proficiency Exam, or College Degree. 4 Submit Official Transcripts from all Colleges and/or Universities attended to Nursing and Allied Health or Enrollment Services. 5. Review department website located at for updates to the program. 6. A minimum cumulative GPA of at least a 2.5 on a 4.0 college scale and a grade C or better in the following admission requirement courses (required for graduation): * ANAT 101 Anatomy & Physiology I 5 semester units +* ANAT 102 Anatomy & Physiology II 5 semester units +* BIOL 125 General Microbiology 5 semester units + MATH 096 Intermediate Algebra or higher 5 semester units + ENGL 101 Freshman Composition 4 semester units +These courses require completion of pre-requisites or placement from assessment scores. *These courses have a 7-year recency requirement. 7. Complete and submit a Nursing Transcript Evaluation/Prerequisite Clearance Form to Nursing and Allied Health or Enrollment Services once all prerequisites courses are in progress. 8. If evaluation results confirm eligibility, download and an application from the MSJC/Allied Health website and submit it during the application filing period. 9. Applications will be reviewed using the multi-criteria point system. Transcript Requirements OFFICIAL transcripts from all colleges and universities attended must be submitted to Nursing and Allied Health Unit or Enrollment Services attached to a Nursing Transcript Evaluation/Prerequisite Clearance Form. Students completing all coursework at Mt. San Jacinto College only need to submit form. A written report of your transcript evaluation and application eligibility will be mailed to your stated address.

3 Note: Deadline to submit a Nursing Transcript Evaluation/Prerequisite request is December 1 st for February 1 st February 28 th application filing period. All FOREIGN TRANSCRIPTS, including high school documentation, must be formally evaluated by the Transcript Evaluation Services, Los Angeles, or the American Education Research Center, West Covina and then evaluated by an MSJC evaluator for course equivalency. See Counseling Office for details/application. Application Filing Period FALL SEMESTER only - February 1 st February 28 th. Applications must be received in The Nursing and Allied Health Unit by final filing date; end of business day. Selection Process Only the students having program requirements completed by the application deadline will be considered for selection. Admission criteria to the Associate of Science Degree in Nursing is based on a Multi-Criteria screening and ranking. Applicants with the highest ranking will be notified by mail on or about 4-6 weeks after the end of the application period. Selection will be offered to the highest ranking applicants whose documentation supports information provided in the application. Refer to the Registered Nursing Program Admission Criteria included in this brochure. Final selection is conditional on the student submitting a clear background check, a satisfactory Physical Exam, American Heart Association, Healthcare Provider CPR certification and passing score on the Diagnostic Readiness Assessment. Detailed instructions for this process will accompany the letter of provisional acceptance. Provisional applicants will be given a Diagnostic Readiness Assessment (Basic Math, English, Reading and Science) using the Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS V). The student s composite score will be added to the selection criteria ranking. See the Associate Degree in Nursing Program Multi-Selection Criteria for more information about TEAS V. Applicants who are not selected for the nursing program may reapply during the next application filing period. No waitlist is maintained. Final selection is conditional on the students passing score on the Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS V) Diagnostic Readiness Assessment (Basic Math, English, Reading and Science), submitting a clear background check, a satisfactory physical exam and obtaining an American Heart Association Healthcare Provider CPR certification. Detailed instructions for this process will accompany the letter of Provisional Acceptance. Additional General Education Requirements The following general education courses are not required for admission to the ADN Program; however they are required for completion of the Associate of Science Degree in Nursing. Most students complete these requirements before entering the ADN Program due to the rigorous nursing student course load. Units Psychology 101 (prerequisite to NURS 236 Mental Health Nursing) 3 Political Science Communication 100 or 103 3* Humanities (Area C*) 3* Multicultural Gender (Area F*) *One 3 unit course can be used to satisfy both areas C and F. (See Student Educational Plan for courses which fulfill these requirements) Note: A grade of C or better is required in all courses used to fulfill requirements for the Associate of Science Degree in Nursing Program. Note: To comply with SB 1393, students with a Baccalaureate degree from a U.S. regionally accredited institution will have the following General Education requirements waived: PS 101, Humanities (Area C) and Multicultural Gender Studies (Area F). Essential Functions All applicants are required to meet the Essential Functions for Success in the Nursing Program. 4 Approximate Expenses When planning expenses, students should be aware they may have to limit their hours of employment, due to extensive ADN Program requirements. Scholarships and grants are available to those students who qualify through the MSJC Financial Aid Office. 1. Students pay for tuition, ASB card and a parking permit as stated in current college catalog 2. Nursing uniforms are purchased through a uniform company, designated by the Nursing and Allied Health Department- $250-$300 (including accessories) 3. Nursing textbooks and supplies- $2,000 for the entire program 4. CPR course- $40-$60 5. Physical examination/laboratory tests- $300-$ Background Clearance Package (includes background check and medical document manager)- $62 7. Licensing Board applications- $300-$ ATI Testing- $500-$ Student Supply Kits- $ Liability insurance covering students is provided by the college at no cost to the student (See VN Brochure) California Board of Registered Nursing Legal Limitation of Licensure Misdemeanors/Felony Notification Graduates of the Associate of Science Degree in Nursing Program are eligible to apply for the NCLEX-RN for licensure. One requirement to qualify for the licensing examination is the submission of additional fingerprints which are then evaluated by the California Department of Justice and the FBI. Applicants must report any prior conviction of any offense other than minor traffic violations. Failure to report such convictions can be grounds for denial of licensure. The Board of Registered Nursing investigates any convictions. Box , Sacramento, CA , (916) address: brn_licensing@dca.ca.gov Citizenship and Immigration Status Verification Required for RN Licensure The Federal Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act requires government agencies to eliminate public benefit to individuals who cannot provide proof of their legal status in the United States. Public benefit has been interpreted to include a license issued by a state. This means that all applicants for licensure as registered nurses are required to submit verification of citizenship or legal residence status in the United States. Disclosure of Social Security Number Disclosure of one s social security number is mandatory for licensure by the BRN in accordance with Section 30 of the Business and Professions Code and Public Law (USCA 405 (c) (2) (c). The Mt. San Jacinto Community College District Board of Trustees has adopted policies and procedures and endorsed practices which provide for the District, its employees and students to be in compliance with all the applicable laws relating to discrimination on the basis of gender, age, race, color, national origin, religion, disability, or sexual orientation.

Admission will be offered to the highest ranking applicants whose documentation supports the information provided in the application. MAXIMUM CRITERIA POINTS FOR EACH POINT DISTRIBUTION CATEGORY 1. Previous Academic Degrees, 5 points If you have multiple degrees/certificates the maximum points awarded is 5 points. Diploma or Relevant Certificates Licensed Healthcare Worker: LVN, Psychiatric Technician, Radiology or AA/AS or BA/BS or Ultrasound Technician, Paramedic Licensed Healthcare Work or Certified Healthcare Worker: CNA, HHA, EMT/EMS Certified Healthcare Worker All Licenses/Certificates must be current to receive 5 points. 2.
