2 Tanaka Learning Contract 2 LEARNING CONTRACT Background The University of Hawaii Career and Technical Education Center sponsors a Career Skills workplace readiness online resource, for which I am the coordinator. Career Skills was developed by Thinking Media, Inc., to provide a variety of short lessons to first-time job seekers and workers on how to obtain their first job, prepare for the workplace, meet employer expectations, develop good work habits, and to improve their overall employability. The Flash-based multimedia tutorial includes graphics, text, and optional audio to provide 200 lessons in the categories of: the job search, work habits, communication skills, workplace effectiveness, and business etiquette. It was first introduced about a year ago, but was used on a limited basis since we wanted to conduct formative assessment before marketing and promoting it on a more widespread basis. The local students and teachers that have used Career Skills in the classroom have provided positive feedback. The office has previously developed a brief Web page introduction to the resource, as well as an informational brochure. To be successful in generating use of the Career Skills resource, I believe we will need to provide our targeted Hawaii public secondary and post-secondary educators with a clearer understanding of how the resource works and can potentially be implemented in their classrooms. Personal learning objective By the end of this project, I will be able to successfully apply/demonstrate instructional design and educational principles through the development of a Web-based instructional module that informs instructors how the Career Skills workplace readiness online resource can be implemented in their classrooms. This instructional module I aspire to develop will serve both to inform the target audience on how to operate the online resource, as well as to provide ideas and sample documents that will hopefully provide a launching point for the target audience to implement Career Skills within their own classrooms. Consequently, my instructional design objective is to develop a Web page with the following components: Introductory hook Screencast/video presentation of the Career Skills resource Post-instructional activities and ideas for implementation, including sample lesson plans and accompanying rubrics tied to Hawaii educational standards and relevant student learning outcomes If I am successful in my project, I believe I will acquire greater knowledge and competence in the following areas: Applying instructional design best practices and theories
3 Tanaka Learning Contract 3 Drafting instructional analysis and planning documents Designing instructional modules for informational rather than academic or training content How to motivate educators and address common barriers to implementing new resources and lessons into their classrooms Recording screencasts and producing video presentations Designing Web-based instruction and resources Writing lesson plans and rubrics Utilizing online surveying tools (while not part of the online instructional module, this will be important for conducting formative assessment and getting feedback on the module itself) Presentation and reflection of efforts (while not part of the online instructional module, this will be important to demonstrate to others and gain a better personal understanding of my work conducted) Learning resources required I will need to obtain or access the following resources in order to be successful in my endeavor: Informal discussions with educators of the Hawaii Department of Education and University of Hawaii, particularly those at the high school and community college levels Hawaii Content and Performance Standards III University of Hawaii course catalogs Web sites, as well as online and print literature relating to principles and practices of education in instructional design, authentic assessments, lesson planning, rubrics. Web sites, as well as online and print literature relating to marketing to and motivating educators Career Skills workplace readiness online application Career Skills existing documentation Camtasia Studio software for recording screencasts and producing video presentations Prior coursework (Laulima/Elluminate archives, class notes, etc.) UH Career and Technical Education Center s Media Specialist to assist in formatting Web page for placement on office Web site ETEC program instructor and/or peers for feedback on work produced Online surveying instruments (UH College of Education Portal survey tool or SurveyMonkey.com tools) Presentation applications
