4 Admission Requirements 1. Apply at least one month prior to enrollment to: Office of College of Graduate Studies ( ) OR 2. Required for full admission: Official transcripts of a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution Minimum GPA 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) on the last 60 hours completed Acceptable Graduate Record Exam (GRE) score Acceptable word essay 3. Required for conditional admission: Official transcripts of a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution Minimum GPA 2.5 (on a 4.0 scale) on the last 60 hours completed Acceptable Graduate Record Exam (GRE) score Acceptable word essay Must satisfy department conditions before full admission is recommended 4. Undergraduate concurrent enrollment requirements Within 12 hours of bachelor degree completion 3.0 GPA in last 60 hours Completed Provisional Enrollment form Applies for admission to graduate school until AFTER undergraduate completion. Advisement after Admission Content Area Advisors direct students enrollment advisement and release of advising holds up to the point students select a faculty committee. During Enrollment in EDU 598 Techniques of Research, students select faculty committees. 5 General Program Information Master s Degree in Curriculum and Instruction Mission Statement: To provide a relevant, research-based curriculum that develops the capacity for leadership through mastery of knowledge, effective communication, collaboration, inquiry, and decision-making to ensure learner success. Goals 1. Knowledge of research-based curriculum and instruction best practices. Prepare students to identify, evaluate, and investigate best practice in the field of curriculum and instruction. 2. Application of curriculum and instruction best practice. Prepare students to apply best practice curriculum and instruction knowledge to classroom and instructional leadership. 3. Communication of best practices in curriculum and instruction to professional audiences. Prepare students communicate to educational professionals best practices in the field of curriculum and instruction. Culminating Graduate Action Research Capstone Experience (in lieu of Comprehensive Exam) Purpose Process Demonstration of proficiency in the application of program goals and concentration area content. The specific nature of the capstone project differs according to the professional needs of each program concentration area. The capstone project is directed by the chair of a 3-member, studentselected faculty advisory committee. The capstone project is completed and presented to a professional audience the last semester of the student s program. Digital Portfolio: Chalk and Wire Purpose Process Evidence of proficiency in the application of particular program content is collected digitally for M.Ed. program assessment and for students personal performance records. 4 * Effective Fall 2012
6 Course Instructors notify students when course assignments are targeted for Chalk and Wire assessment. Completed assignments are submitted by students and assessed by instructors. Assessed assignments will be reviewed by department faculty for program evaluation. After graduation, students determine the degree to which they maintain access to digital records stored in Chalk and Wire. Thesis Option (offered to interested students) Requirements Full admission to the Curriculum & Instruction M.ED. program Concentration area course requirements AND 6 hours EDU 588 Permission from: Concentration area advisor Committee chair C&I department chair Thesis guidelines Faculty Committee Roles and Responsibilities Graduate Student Committee Chair Develops a 3- faculty member committee to direct completion of the student s capstone project (usually during the semester enrolled in EDU 598, Techniques of Research). Completes the Degree Plan with the identified committee chair. Works under the supervision of the committee chair to ethically meet departmental capstone project standards and satisfy committee specifications and timelines. Applies for graduation the semester BEFORE graduation. m1.pdf Submits Chalk and Wire assignments as directed. 7 Committee Member Supervises student completion of the capstone project to ensure project meets ethical and departmental capstone project standards and satisfies committee specifications and timelines. Assesses Chalk and Wire assessments with feedback from committee members. Attends and evaluates student capstone project presentations. 21 Tarleton Model for Accelerated Teacher Education TMATE The TMATE year long Texas Teaching certification program is a collaborative effort consisting of graduate coursework competed at Tarleton State University and teaching in area school districts. All TMATE interns are accepted into the Curriculum and Instruction master s degree in education program. After certification requirements are completed, TMATE interns may complete the master of education degree in curriculum and instruction degree requirements. Texas teaching certification options include: EC-6 Generalist (ESL and Bilingual) 4-8 Generalist 4-8 Content areas 8-12 Content areas EC 12 Special Education, Art, Theater, or Languages D e s i g n e d f o r Adults with a bachelor s degree who seek to change careers and become teaching professionals. Y o u r f u t u r e TMATE interns are teachers of record in area schools during the first year of the program and continue in the profession provided they satisfactorily complete the TMATE and state requirements.
