2 VISION Our aim is to offer any young South African the opportunity to participate in a world class music competition, in order to promote young musical talent in all ages and from diverse backgrounds. By hosting a national classical music competition, SACS intends to nurture the musical development of young people throughout our country and to enhance our commitment to promoting music at SACS. Thus, the school rewards young people who have shown commitment to their musical studies and have achieved a high degree of excellence. COMPETITION GUIDELINES 2015 The competition is open to scholars only, up to Matric and between the ages of 11 and 19, playing any of the instruments listed below. There are two sections, piano and non-piano, which are divided into age-group categories. Two finalists will be chosen from Round 2, from each age-category in the Piano section and two from each age category in the Instrumental/ Vocal section. 1. MIAGI INTERNATIONAL PERFORMING TOUR AWARD: Bi-annual all expenses paid performing tour with the MIAGI Orchestra. ANNUAL SACS CONCERTO FESTIVAL: The winner in the yr category will be invited to perform at the Annual SACS Concerto Festival. 2. 3 3. COMPETITION CATEGORIES AND REQUIREMENTS 3.1. FIRST ROUND PIANO AND INSTRUMENTAL/VOCAL AGE CATEGORY 3.2. The age of a contestant will be taken as at 31 July After Round One, successful candidates from each of the categories will be advised that they are to compete in Round Two. Contestants must be available to compete on all set dates in order to compete in the final round Round Two requires at least one new work, i.e., the first work should be a completely new work that has not been submitted for the first round but the second work may be a repeat of a work from Round One, or a new work Two finalists from each age category will be selected to go through to the Final Round. Information regarding the Final Round will be given to all performers at the end of Round Two Finalists may repeat pieces played in the previous rounds or may perform new works Successful finalists will be notified in writing that they have reached the Final Round All Round Two participants must submit, on the day of their performance, their intended program for the Final Round, irrespective of whether they qualify or not. VENUE details of the work (including opus numbers etc,), composer and accompanist s name, where applicable, must be clearly stated The first round is an audition round by video, only Participants for Round 2 will be selected by the adjudicators The semi-final and final rounds of the competition will be held at SACS High School, in the Auditorium and in the Hofmeyr Hall. 5. DATES: 5.1. Video Round entries to be submitted by 31 May Semi-final Round Wednesday 7 October from 8h30; 5.3. Final Round Saturday 10 October, Junior Section 16h00, Senior Section 18h May 2015 Videos to be submitted 7 October 2015 Round 2 from 08h30 10 October 2015 Final Round 16h00 Junior section 10 October 2015 Final Round 19h00 Senior Section 6. MUSIC All competitors are required to bring original scores of their work/s, even if the performance is from memory. This is non-negotiable in terms of copyright law and failure to do so will result in disqualification. 7. ENTRY FORMS Separate forms need to be completed for each student entering. ( Teachers need to ensure that only one student is entered per entry form.) Forms need to be completed in full, clearly and legibly, for the correct completion of certificates and reports. Incomplete information may result in the disqualification of the entry. 5 7.1. Include the following with the entry form: A certified copy of the birth certificate or identity document. Entries without this will not be accepted Contestant may enter more than one instrument at stipulated entry fee. ALL AGE CATEGORIES ENTRY FEE R Closing Date: Entries will be accepted between 1 May 31 May 2015 only Entries that are incorrectly filled in, illegible or incomplete will also not be accepted Video Submissions: For the preliminary audition round, participants will enter via online video submission. Finalists will be selected from the Preliminary Round to compete in the live Semi-Final and Final Rounds. A scanned pdf of a birth certificate, and online payments of application fees must be submitted at the time of video submission. 4

6 7.6. Audition Video Requirements Each candidate needs to set up a You Tube account. They must submit their video here. Or follow this link 3qF9QU/viewform Each applicant will submit 3 video files. Each video file should contain a complete work, a complete single movement (or moveme nts) from a multimovement work. Incomplete movements or incomplete single-movement works will be disqualified Please allow sufficient time to prepare and upload videos before the submission deadline. It is advisable to have a trial run uploading to You Tube long beforehand Videos must not be edited in any way The applicant must remain on screen at all times Individual files can be as large as 5 GB, but keep in mind that upload speed is dependent upon both your file size and the speed of your internet connection. Files larger than 50 MB may take some time to upload. Make sure your connection is stable and do not allow your computer to go into sleep or hibernation mode while your files are uploading Each composition or movement must be recorded without editing; edited performances will be disqualified. Entrants should submit as high quality recording as possible All works intended to be played with piano accompaniment must be recorded with a piano accompaniment. 8. OTHER CONSIDERATIONS 8.1. The performance of each contestant is timed. All time requirements refer to real performance time; pauses between movements, entrance and exit times, etc. are not taken into account Contestants will only be permitted to perform during their allocated times All Contestants must present themselves timeously for their performance i.e. at least 15 minutes before their allocated time Certificates will be given at the end of Round Two. At the end of Round Two, two selected finalists from each age category will be expected to compete in the final round. The Adjudicators may choose up to a maximum of four finalists in the age group Should a contestant be disqualified, an adjudication report will be given The teachers and/or parents will be notified if their student/s have progressed to the next round Successful contestants, who have been selected for the final round, will be informed by post, SMS, telephone or . 5

7 8.8. The semi-final and final rounds are open to the public and an entry fee will be charged. Contestants and accompanists will be allowed to enter the hall free of charge on their performance day/s. 9. THE FINAL ROUND Date: 10 October 2015 Tickets: R70.00 per adult and R30 per scholar. (Two complimentary tickets will be awarded to each finalist.) should you have any queries. Final round tickets will be on sale at the door from the start of the semi-final round. At the end of the evening, prizes will be awarded to the Contestants. 10. RULES The adjudicators will appoint a substitute finalist if the situation arises where a contestant is unable to participate in the final round. The organizers must be informed timeously Finalists may choose to perform new work/s or may choose to play work/s that were previously performed in the previous rounds All candidates participating in the Gala Evening must ensure that they have their own bank accounts. 11. GENERAL INFORMATION/RULES This is a competition for soloists - no duets, trios, quartets or ensembles are to be entered Contestants may only perform works of a serious nature. No contemporary light music will be accepted. Different styles need to be represented and only published works will be acceptable. (N o handwritten scores or incomplete scores consisting of chord symbols.) All repeat signs must be ignored, except for Da Capo indications which should be observed Accompanists and page turners must be provided by the contestant, where applicable. All travel and accompanist s fees are the contestant s responsibility No audience member or contestant may leave the hall while the session is in progress. All contestants are to remain until the end of the proceedings The competitor takes full responsibility for complying with copyright regulations and will be held liable for any fines resulting from SAMRO finding them not to be in possession of the original score Should the situation arise where an adjudicator is also the competitor s teacher, an additional second adjudicator will be appointed to ensure fairness and that there are no irregularities. 6

8 12. DISQUALIFICATIONS Please note that candidates will be disqualified at any stage in the competition should they: Not present the original scores on arrival Neglect to supply the correct number of photocopies Requirements: Photocopies, with the candidates name clearly displayed, must be submitted and will be destroyed after the performance: Round One - One complete set Round Two - Two complete sets Final Round - Two complete sets (each copy must be bound) Fail to arrive at the appointed time Play the incorrect number of pieces and/or play over the time limit for the appropriate round. (The adjudicators reserve the right to cut short a rogramme that exceeds the time limit) 13. GENERAL INFORMATION The organizing committee reserves the right to cancel the competition at any stage for any unforeseen circumstances or if deemed necessary in their opinion. Entry fees will not be refunded under any circumstances whatsoever, including to contestants wishing to withdraw from the competition Personal details required for the entry form will not be published or provided to anyone without the consent of the candidate. The committee takes no responsibility for incorrect or altered information which has not been disclosed. The onus rests on the contestants to give notice of any change of addresses (postal and/or ), as well as all contact numbers. Please ensure that all details of the teacher and the student are correct and up to date The committee accepts no responsibility for late or lost entries Although limited warm-up facilities are available, it is entirely the candidate s responsibility to get back to the concert hall in time for their performance. Staff will not be provided to escort candidates to and from a warm-up room A music stand will be provided on stage Category winners will not be allowed to participate in the same category the following year, though they may participate in a higher category if they qualify in terms of their age. The winner of the age group category may not re-enter Upon signing the first round entry form, a basic agreement is established between the executive committee and the candidate. Contestants hereby accept these rules and regulations and agree to be bound by them Please take note that the contestants, or parents/guardians of contestants, hereby confirm that they have been advised that any portion of the competition may be recorded for promotional purposes and that they have consented to such recordal. DVD s may be produced of the event and may be made available for sale. 7

9 13.9. The adjudicators have the authority to cancel Round Two in any category, according to their discretion, and finalists will be chosen directly from Round One Any questions not covered by these rules and guidelines shall be referred to the competition committee, whose decision on such matters shall be final The decisions of the adjudicators during all rounds are final. There will be no debate in any form and no correspondence will be entered into. 8
