Suffolk Cultural Competitions For Schools
INTRODUCTION Hello and welcome to the Sainsbury s Suffolk School Games Cultural Information for Schools 2014/2015. This document sets out ways that your school, aside from participating in the sports competitions, can become involved through music, poetry and art.
As Children & Young People Officer for Suffolk Sport, the County Sports Partnership, I have a specific remit for coordinating the Sainsbury s Suffolk School Games Summer Festival through the Local Organising Committee to ensure that it is successfully delivered. One of our key aims is to provide a diverse cultural element to the festival, featuring as an example an Olympic style opening ceremony. I am delighted that for the first time we are able to offer exciting competitions and challenges that will allow children to demonstrate and express the key messages and values of the Sainsbury s Suffolk School Games in a variety of ways. These are contained within the guide as well as details of how to take part. I would welcome entries from all schools. Here is some background information on School Games in Suffolk; The annual calendar of inter-school competitions for young people in school years 1-13 will, in addition to individual county finals delivered with other partners, include the prestigious Sainsbury s Suffolk School Games Summer Festivals. Organisation of the calendar is dependent upon the coordinated delivery of: The county s eight School Games Organisers Sports affiliated to the Suffolk Schools Sports Association Suffolk Sport Individual primary school sports associations Local officers representing National Governing Bodies of sports and numerous other paid and voluntary organisations within the county. For the first time in 2014 two summer festivals were delivered in which 1,303 participants competed in 17 different competitions across 10 sports. The delivery of festivals is underpinned by the excellent work of 220 young leaders chosen and trained from schools across Suffolk. In 2015 our summer festivals will take place on 30th June (Ipswich) and 10th July (Bury St Edmunds). Our website provides all schools with a helpful and useful resource across aspects of school sport in Suffolk, which in addition to our active social media outlets, gives schools the opportunity to share best practice and successful PE and sport stories. I look forward to seeing, hearing and watching your creations!! James Payne Children & Young People Officer, Suffolk Sport

MUSIC RECORD THE ANTHEM OF THE GAMES Your school has the opportunity to leave a musical legacy on the Sainsbury s Suffolk School Games. The Local Organising Committee is looking for a school to compose and record a piece of music that will become the anthem of the Games in Suffolk. The winning school, as determined by a local judging panel, will have the opportunity to have its piece of music/ song recorded professionally in a studio. In addition to the professional recording, the winning piece of music will be used at the Sainsbury s School Games Festivals in Suffolk in 2015 and will also feature as part of the official event video. This is a fabulous opportunity for keen and enthusiastic pupils to have their musical talents showcased in Suffolk and really bring the cultural element of the Games alive. How to enter Entry is open to all current Suffolk school pupils, either as solo artists or as part of a group or band. All schools may submit more than one entry but each pupil may only feature in one entry. The piece of music submitted must be a minimum of three and a maximum of four minutes in duration. All entries should give consideration to the Spirit of the Games values- Determination Teamwork Self Belief Respect Passion Honesty All entries must be submitted digitally on a CD to - James Payne, Suffolk Sport, c/o SCDC, Melton Hill, WOODBRIDGE. IP12 1AU The closing date for entries is Friday 20th March 2015.
POETRY WHAT SCHOOL SPORT MEANS TO ME How can the meaning and view of School Sport be encapsulated in words? The Local Organising Committee is looking for a young person to share through poetry, what sport in school means to them. The winning entry, as determined by a local judging panel, will have their poem featured as part of the opening ceremony at the Sainsbury s Suffolk School Games Festivals in 2015 and will be asked to attend and perform where possible. In addition a number of other selected poems, as chosen by the panel, will feature at the festival. How to enter Entry is open to all current Suffolk school pupils. There is no restriction on the number of entries per school, however there is a maximum of one entry per pupil. The poem can be written in any style and as a guide should contain a minimum of 20 words, there is no upper limit. All entries should be titled by the entrant and be based around the brief what school sport means to me. Entries can be submitted either in hard copy or electronically and submitted to; James Payne, Suffolk Sport, c/o SCDC, Melton Hill, WOODBRIDGE. IP12 1AU james.payne@suffolksport.com The closing date for entries is Friday 20th March 2015.
ART LET S DECORATE THE FESTIVAL TOGETHER One of the key aims of the Sainsbury s Suffolk School Games Festivals is to inspire young people through sport. In preparing our event venue to look both inspirational and professional we use a number of banners, logos and other promotional material. Whilst the corporate messages are key in terms of partners, the venue really needs that personal touch, so this year the Local Organising Committee is offering schools the opportunity to help us do just that! We would like pupils to produce a school flag contributed to by as many children as possible from across the school. All flags that we receive will be displayed across the different venues used for the festival to provide extra colour, excitement and to provide that personal touch. How to enter Entry is open to all current Suffolk schools. Entries are limited to three flags per school. The flag must have maximum dimensions of 4ft in height and 6ft in width and be made from a cloth material. The name of your school should be clearly shown and incorporated as part of your entry. Entries should be school sport related around the theme of inspiration and can feature any type of artwork through the use of pens, pencils, paint etc. Entries should be submitted to; James Payne, Suffolk Sport, c/o SCDC, Melton Hill, WOODBRIDGE. IP12 1AU The closing date for entries is Friday 20th March 2015.
School Games Poetry Picking the Team I was always picked last Because I wasn t very fast, And skills I had none, I only played to have fun. I didn t care about getting the win; The others believed losing was a sin. I didn t give up until the game was done, Because school sports was so fun! Jacob G - Year 12 student It s Time In school sports you are not alone: A time to let your talents be set in stone. It is a place where games are lost and won, So it is time to do what must be done. It is a place where you need to try your best, Until it comes time to have a rest. You can only achieve If you believe. Jordan F - Year 11 Student Get involved! Come on, What you waiting for? Get involved! School sports are fun! There are many to pick from! Basketball, Badminton, Baseball, Get active! Sports are fun, get involved! You ll never regret it! They are times you ll never forget, As your effort counts for everything! So come on, What you waiting for? Get involved! Abbie E - Year 11 Student CONTACT t: e: info@suffolksport.com
