2 Company Established in 1982 Engineering, manufacturing and sales company, specialising in solutions for forest equipment and machines. Products are sold under the brand name Naarva. Pentin Paja Oy has a reputation as a very innovative company.

5 Naarva products Since 1992 the company has manufactured and sold its Naarva head, which is a combination of felling head and grapple. We have several models for small tractor mounted loaders to big harvester cranes.

6 Patented cutting device All Naarva felling heads, energy wood heads, and stroke harvesters are equipped with an efficient guillotine that cuts the wood with a single blade, which during over 16 years use has proved to be very reliable.

7 Patented cutting device The cutting blade leaves undamaged smooth cutting surface. Solid structure allows rough usage. High quality steel blade is not damaged by stones or sand. Stumps can be cut close to the ground

28 Naarva mounder New, superior method for mounding of soil. Mounding gives better growing environment for planted seedlings. Current methods are too slow (excavator bucket mounding) or too expensive and complicated. (Bracke mounder) Developed by Pentin Paja Oy as part of EffFibre-project (Value through Intensive and Efficient Fibre Supply) together with Metsäliitto, Stora Enso, UPM, Metsähallitus, Ponsse Oyj, Cranex Oy, Argone Oy, Aalto-yliopisto, Metsäntutkimuslaitos, Metsäteho.

30 Mounder Easy installation to the place of back wheel. Cost-efficient and fast mounding. Requires no extra motor. Rotation from the wheel hub. Suitable for mounding and scarification of soil. Price level ca (Bracke mounder ).

31 Operating principle All wheels in the forwarder have the same rotating speed. When forwarder s wheel is replaced with a smaller mounding wheel, outer surface of the wheel will move slower than the machine, and it grabs and compresses the soil. (Video)

32 Naarva mounder Completely new innovation for soil cultivation. Lower costs for forest owners and contractors. Makes mechanized mounding easier and faster. Under development is also a planting device for forwarders. Enables simultaneous mounding and planting.

34 Naarva uprooter Completely mechanized cleaning of pine and spruce seedling stands.

35 Problems today in cleaning Labor for manual clearing not available. Cleaning must be done many times with clearing saw before thinning because of sprouting = expensive.

36 Naarva uprooter Naarva uprooter presses unwanted saplings between rubbers with its jaws and roots them out of the ground. No sprouting: Uprooting dries and breaks the roots. This prevents growth of new unwanted plants from the roots. Only one treatment is required before precommercial thinning.

39 Benefits of uprooting compared to manual cleaning: Better growth for seedlings in diameter and height. (Less competition, more nutrients for the seedling.) No stump sprouts because of cutting. 0 % sprouting. Saves money because only one treatment is required. Uprooted forests are easier to move in and more pleasant to watch. 40 Naarva uprooter data Work rate 4 9 hour / hectare. Average 6,2 h/hectare. All costs included, total costs for mechanical cleaning is 2/3 or half of manual cleaning costs in Finland. New product; no long term studies yet, but results from 4 growing seasons are very promising. Better growth = First thinnings done earlier = More profit.

41 UPM-Kymmene Oyj UPM is a Finnish pulp, paper and timber manufacturer. Employs around 24,000 people and it has production plants in 17 countries. UPM shares are listed on the NASDAQ OMX Helsinki stock exchange. UPM uses Naarva uprooters in their forests, and offer seedling stand cleaning for forest owners. UPM contractors have 10 units of Naarva uprooters in Finland.

42 Holmen is a Swedish company of pulp and paper industry. Holmen Skog owns over 1 million hectares of forests in Sweden. First Naarva uprooter to Sweden went to Holmen in the fall 2013.
