1 Activity 1: Past Tense Verbs Due Date INTRODUCTION To talk about events in the past, use past tense verb forms. For example, this sentence is correct: Slaves were men, women, and children. This sentence is not correct: In the past, slaves are men, women, and children. INSTRUCTIONS 1. Read all the instructions before you go to the computer. 2. Go to: 3. Read the text. 3 Slaves 1 (be) men, women, and children. They 2 (come) from Africa. People 3 (capture) them in their villages and they 4 (force) them to go to the coast and to take ships across the Atlantic Ocean to the Americas. It 5 (start) at the end of the fourteenth century. The slaves usually 6 (become) servants at the time. Later, the Europeans 7 (need) labor to exploit the natural resources of the new lands, so they 8 (import) more slaves from Africa. The middle passage (crossing the Atlantic) The slaves 9 (arrive) at the harbor and they 10 (not/know) what to expect: no slave ever 11 (come) back! They 12 (be) terrified and 13 (have) to go on ships. Sailors 14 (load) them and 15 (consider) that they 16 (be) goods to be sold. Many 17 (not /survive) the journey because of the horrific conditions in which they 18 (cross) the Atlantic. The merchants 19 (chain) them and the slaves 20 (have) little room to move. Some of them 21 (commit) suicide by refusing to eat. Slave ships 22 (use) a route called the middle passage. It 23 (be) the second part of the triangle trade. European merchants 24 (exchange) goods like pots, pans, guns, alcohol, and horses in Africa for slaves. Then they 25 (ship) the slaves to the Americas, 26 (sell) them, and 27 (bring) goods like sugar, cotton, rum, tobacco, and coffee back to Europe. Merchants who 28 (trade) this way 29 (can) become very rich as American goods 30 (fetch*) a high price in Europe. *( Fetch means get. ) Activity 2: Primary Sources Due Date INTRODUCTION A primary source is something from the past 3 that teaches us about that time. Primary means first hand. For example, a primary source document is written by a person who witnessed or experienced the event.
