College Avenue Newark, De Dear Corporate Friend: November 10, 2010 Greetings from the University of Delaware Chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE-UDEL)! We would like to thank you for your interest in our chapter. NSBE was founded in 1975 and is the largest non-profit student-operated organization in the country. The NSBE-UDEL chapter is dedicated to maintaining our position as the top professional resource and career services center to the members of the University of Delaware community. Gaining your corporate guidance and partnership would be an excellent help to achieving that goal and enhancing the quality of your organization. The assistance of your company will help our members become the professional engineers and citizens that NSBE-UDEL has produced for years. Corporate support and participation has made the University of Delaware Chapter of NSBE the outstanding organization that it is today. With corporate support, NSBE-UDEL was able to triple the number of attendees to the 2010 National Convention. Our chapter offers unparalleled recruiting opportunities for our corporate sponsors, and a diverse talent pool for your recruitment efforts. There are a plethora of opportunities for corporations to foster a positive relationship with our chapter. As our chapter continues to expand, so do our visions, expectations, and goals. A stronger connection with the students on our campus along with organizations outside our school, including Urban League and AABE (American Association of Blacks in Energy), is one of our many goals. 4 SUMMARY OF PROGRAMS The University of Delaware Chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers focuses its programming around the organization s National Directives: Academic Excellence and Pipeline Development. By making an investment in our national and chapter programming, corporations and organizations ultimately make an invaluable investment in the growth and development of future industry leaders. Our mission is to increase the number of culturally responsible black engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally, and positively impact the community. Provided below are just a few of the past programs and events, as well as a few events to be held this year. National Programs Achievers Plus (A+) is designed to help students improve their overall Grade Point Average. Whether members strive for a 4.0 or a 2.5, the Achiever's Plus project is an effective academic guide. Since academic excellence is our vision, the purpose of the Achiever's Plus is to utilize peer relationships to motivate and challenge student members to increase their grades. Achiever s Plus is fulfilled through the development and implementation of innovative and stimulating workshops and seminars geared towards academics and academic excellence. Battle of the Engineers (Previously known as Academic Tech Bowl) is a Jeopardy style competition held annual at our Fall Regional Conference. In an effort to develop and sharpen the quest for technical expertise, NSBE developed the Academic Technical Bowl to encourage healthy competition through a game show type environment. The questions asked cover a wide variety of topics, from NSBE history to fundamental science and engineering classes. The Technical Outreach and Community Help (TORCH) Program is designed to increase the number of currently under-served communities who have access, technical assistance and skills, to receive value from digital technology. Many members have recently crossed over from communities without access to digital technology to college campuses where digital technology is now their focus. The objective is to create avenues through leadership communities and corporate America that will lead to the placement of and education about digital technology in disadvantaged communities. Graduate Student Poster Presentation is an opportunity for graduate students to present their research to National Convention attendees. It is a forum for students, faculty, and technical professionals to have informative discussions on novel research projects. The Technical Research Exhibition (TRE) is designed to showcase NSBE members' skills in technical writing and theoretical research. The competition provides an opportunity for graduate students and technical professionals to present their research findings while encouraging undergraduate students to showcase their research and pursue graduate degrees. TRE is held during the Fall Regional Conference (FRC) and Annual National Convention.

5 Pre-College Initiative (PCI) is the National Society of Black Engineers' effort to promote college, academics, technology and leadership to students at the high school and junior high school levels. The program consists of many activities, where NSBE collegiate members serve as mentors and educators to pre-college students. The University of Delaware s NSBE chapter is focused on expanding its PCI program and currently retains four PCI students who have been very active by attending meetings as well as our annual Fall Zone Summit. Chapter Programs Our Resume Building Workshop has been an annual success, preparing students for their optimal first impression. Facility Tours introduce undergraduate members to the work atmosphere in various industries and companies. Every interaction that the University of Delaware Chapter of NSBE has with the corporate world benefits not only our chapter, but the corporations as well. We are open to the possibility of touring your facility in the near future. Corporate Information Series is a program in which participating company representatives and University of Delaware alumni present a series of workshops, seminars and lectures. The goal of these programs is to increase the student s awareness of the skills required for success in the workforce. Our planned topics will cover the following: Interview Tips and Attire Graduate School Preparation Resume Critique Networking Company Presentations Community Service NSBE-UDEL UDEL is committed to supporting our personal communities and also those surrounding our campus. We have previously been involved in Haiti relief efforts and have also participated in numerous community service programs on campus. We plan on increasing our involvement in the community this upcoming year and thus have an array of numerous community service activities in which we would like to participate. Adopt A Highway. We, the NSBE-UDEL chapter have adopted Wyoming Road in Newark Delaware. Adopting a highway not only allows for NSBE-UDEL to receive positive recognition, it also means that we are responsible for supporting the community in which we live by making sure our highway remains clean and well maintained. A Walk for Education (AWFE) consists of local NSBE chapters walking in teams around urban communities to spread information on higher education. By doing this, we hope to encourage more families to send their children to college in order to foster a nation with more responsible, educated and successful citizens. NSBE-UDEL will be hosting AWFE this April in Wilmington, Delaware. We are looking for support and volunteers for this enlightening event.

6 The Blood Drive is a cosponsored program that NSBE organizes in conjunction with the American Red Cross. Whether members are donating their own blood or advertising for the event it is an excellent way for NSBE to impact within and outside the UD community. Community Service Week is a week that celebrates the joys of giving back to the community. During this week, NSBE-UDEL members will participate in a different service project each day. This is a very rewarding practice and it serves as a great networking event while working to improve the community. During Delaware Food Bank volunteering, members assist in organizing, packaging, and distributing food to people in need. Before Thanksgiving, NSBE-UDEL helped to prepare food boxes for needy families. We have several trips planned for next semester. EMMAUS House is a house that provides struggling homeless families a safe and stable shelter in which they can live together and address their current housing situation. Students of the NSBE-UDEL chapter will gather once each week to go to Emmaus property and provide various kinds of services such as rebuilding beds, tutoring children, and doing odd jobs. The Book Drive is a service project and fundraiser that helps keep books out of landfills while supporting literacy programs worldwide. The Book Drive is a campus wide program in which the UD community is able to donate their unwanted books to help children and families around the world. CONFERENCES Regional Leadership Conference (RLC) is an interactive conference that serves as a training ground for NSBE chapter officers within the Mid-Atlantic United States Region (Region II); consisting primarily of workshops and exercises focused on leadership skills, management skills, problem solving, officer responsibilities, and organizational skills. o August 13 th -15 th, Kingsport, TN Zone Summit allows for the different NSBE chapters to come together as one and discuss the future of NSBE. The University of Delaware Chapter is a part of the Danger Zone, which includes other NSBE Chapters within the Philadelphia region. These chapters include University of Pennsylvania, Temple University, Lehigh University and Villanova University. The zone summit provides students the opportunity to network with the students from other Chapters of Danger Zone, and exchange ideas that enhance leadership development, academic excellence and professionalism. o October 9 th, Temple University, PA Fall Conferences include activities such as team building exercises, academic competitions, PCI mini-conference, and a career fair. Fall Regional Conference (FRC) includes an undergraduate/graduate school fair along with a myriad of technical, cultural, and professional workshops. PCI, Collegiate and Alumni/Corporate members attend FRC, which provides the

7 opportunity for the entire Region to interact and learn from one another. It also affords corporate sponsors the opportunity to interact with the past, present, and future leaders of NSBE. o FRC: November 5th-7th, Pittsburgh, PA National Convention is the climax of the annual NSBE experience. Students from around the world come together, all working to fulfill the NSBE mission. A career fair with over 300 companies, talks given from world-renowned professionals, and numerous personal development and academic workshops all take place at National Convention. NSBE-UDEL plans on having 30 people attend the National Convention so that our membership can have a fulfilling experience in a different atmosphere than traditional education. o March 23 rd - March 27 th, St Louis, MO LEVELS OF SUPPORT We accept non-monetary items for support (i.e. supplies, computers, electronics, and other donations).
