As one of the largest producers of stainless steel in the world, Outokumpu fuels this demand by supplying our customers with even better steels to meet their needs. Our full range of austenitic, ferritic, and duplex grades include our newest proprietary duplex LDX 2101 which combines low nickel content with high mechanical strength. We provide stainless in all product forms including plate, coil, bar, pipe, and fittings. North American Production We recognize the need to be close to our customers to help ensure that the process of purchasing stainless steel is as simple as possible. We meet this need through a global network of mills and service centers. In North America we produce stainless steel at our plate operations in New Castle, Indiana; our bar facility in Richburg, South Carolina; our pipe mill in Wildwood, Florida; and our fittings location in Brockville, Ontario. Outokumpu s stringent quality and cost controls begin at our company-operated chromite mine and ferrochrome smelter in Europe. Our commitment to quality is supported by our state-of-the-art melt shops that ensure superior control of product composition, structure, and inclusion pattern resulting in very clean steel. Computerized process control of our rolling mills, heat treatment facilities, and finishing lines ensure consistency and superior control of the targeted properties that are so critical to the exacting demands of the biofuels and biomass industry. Superior Grades, Better Performance Outokumpu produces commodity grades of stainless (like 304, 316L), high performing corrosion resistant grades such as 254 SMO, and a growing number of proprietary grades developed to meet higher strength demands, superior corrosion resistance levels, and lower price. In fact, Outokumpu is one of the world s largest producers of duplex stainless steel. These grades have a lower nickel content offering a pitting resistance similar to grades 304 and 316L, but at a cost lower than an equivalent austenitic grade. For example, our newest lean duplex LDX 2101 contains only 1.5% nickel

4 while 316L contains 10.2% nickel. Although LDX 2101 often performs similarly to 316L with regards to pitting resistance, LDX 2101 has far better stress corrosion cracking resistance and twice the mechanical strength, allowing the biofuels/biomass contractor to use less material for ultimate price savings. Not only can our stronger grades provide cost-savings for the initial material cost, additional project cost savings can also be realized. For example, in some biofuels/biomass facilities, stainless steel tanks are elevated requiring additional support and foundation materials. When using a higher mechanical strength grade stainless like LDX 2101, which weighs less than a commodity grade, the contractor can use less structural support and foundation materials while simplifying the construction process thus saving cost in the overall project. The recirculation of process water in biofuels production has been a welcome development from an environmental point of view, but has also led to increased concentrations of chlorides and polysulfides in process and steam. To meet these and other challenges, Outokumpu has refined our duplex grades over many years and today offers a broad spectrum of grades. For example, today almost all pressure vessels used in the biofuels industry are made of duplex materials. Additionally, duplex stainless is increasingly used in the fabrication of non-pressurized vessels, as well as main process equipment. In applications where very high ductility, wide temperature ranges, or specific corrosion features are desired, Outokumpu s austenitic and superaustenitic grades are often recommended. Despite developments of duplex grades in recent years, austenitic grades may still offer the best performance in some applications. Outokumpu s superaustenitic grades, such as 254 SMO, have for more than 30 years shown reliability in resisting highly corrosive environments. Our technical specialists can easily guide customers towards the most optimal material choice between austenitics and duplex grades. Low Environmental Impact Let s face it, the biofuels and biomass producer is on the leading edge of green technology and is seeking green building products as well. Very few industrial construction or fabrication materials are as environmentally friendly as stainless steel. All of our grades and product forms are 100% recyclable. And many of our products originate from a melt that, itself, uses recycled scrap stainless steel. At Outokumpu, the proportion of recycled metal content used as raw material averages around 90%. Using recycled metal in addition to ore saves significant amounts of raw materials and energy, not to mention minimizes the impact of mining for this raw material. One additional environmental benefit of using stainless steel; many grades, including the duplex family of grades, are virtually maintenance-free, so they don t require painting (and repainting over time). This saves on labor and material costs, as well as reduces the possibility of emitting VOCs into the atmosphere. Technical Support Choosing the right grade can offer substantial rewards. In this regard, our technical team assists users and fabricators in the selection, installation, operation, and maintenance of our stainless steel applications. We also offer end-users the opportunity to test materials on their own premises. This testing is supported by extensive testing in our state-of-the-art laboratory where our personnel can draw upon years of field experience with stainless steel to help customers make technically and economically correct materials decisions.
