Challenge 1: more and more people need transportation. Leta NASA/ bildbyrå?
7 1 The BRT concept 1 High capacity buses 2 Exclusive bus lanes 3 Offboard ticketing 4 Level boarding 5 Priority at intersections 6 Traffic control 7 Passenger information solution: Go for a combination of capacity, speed and flexibility. BRT is a quickly implemented, very cost-effective way of providing public transport that meets high demands for capacity, quality, safety and low environmental impact. It solves tomorrow s mass transit challenges today. The Bus Rapid Transit concept Short for Bus Rapid Transit, BRT is a highly effective public transport concept designed to meet the growing transport demands in cities around the world. The key elements of BRT are high-capacity buses, exclusive bus lanes, offboard ticketing, level boarding, priority at intersections, traffic control and passenger information. Volvo the global leader in BRT The BRT concept was pioneered by the Brazilian city of Curitiba some 25 years ago, and since then Volvo has been deeply involved in its development. Today, Volvo Bus Corporation is the world s leading supplier of buses for BRT systems, being the first manufacturer of bi-articulated buses back in the early 1990s. This is no coincidence, since the BRT concept merges well with Volvo s core values of quality, safety and environmental care. Mexico City goes BRT to better serve its growing population. The world goes BRT Having seen its initial growth in Latin America, the BRT concept is now spreading across the globe. Cities in Canada, France, Finland, the Netherlands, China, Australia and the USA have recently introduced BRT systems. Volvo s hometown of Gothenburg is already going for its 3rd and 4th BRT corridor.

BRT is built up of corridors where the trunk lines run. solution: Make high-precision investments in infrastructure and systems. Introducing BRT in different cities shows that it can transport just as many people per hour as a lightrail system and as quickly. However, BRT means a much faster process, much lower costs and significantly more flexibility. Introducing BRT can be done quickly Planning and implementation is much quicker with BRT than with a rail-based system. Generally, it can take a year to 18 months to implement. To facilitate the planning and conceptualization process, Volvo provides consultation services and workshops. Only a relatively small investment The cost of a BRT system is around one-twentieth of a subway system and considerably less than other railbased systems. The investment in infrastructure is limited and no major disruptions of the city are needed. What is more, operating costs are significantly lower. In fact, most BRT systems are run without subsidies and the buses are usually an investment made by private bus operators. This is where Volvo Financial Services can play an important role. A flexible system that can be gradually introduced BRT is modular and can be customised for any city. It is built up of corridors. These are for the trunk lines, which are serviced by feeder lines from the surrounding area. The system can be introduced gradually, one corridor at a time, and be adapted to city development and changing travel demands. HOW MUCH public transport DOES a billion dollars buy? 10 kilometres of subway 50 kilometres of lightrail 250 kilometres of BRT
QuickBird Digitalglobe/Eurimage 2002 Metria 2007 Imagery courtesy of Metria, a division within Lantmäteriet. Challenge 3: Cities are increasingly affected by traffic problems and pollution.
Bi-articulated bus running along one BRT corridor in Gothenburg, Sweden. solution: Minimise the need for cars and optimise resource use. Volvo s approach to public transport is holistic. This means that all resource use is factored in and that the most effective solution is found. It s how Volvo sees the environmental benefits of BRT, focusing on energy efficiency, cleaner energy and optimised system approach. BRT reduces car traffic Congestion is a growing problem in most metropolitan areas. Air and noise pollution and accidents are other problems arising from car traffic. With BRT, public transport becomes attractive for car users. Since an articulated bus can replace around 100 cars, the result is a big cut in emissions. Since the same bus only occupies 5% of the road space, congestion is also effectively reduced. Cleaner engine technology and alternative fuels At Volvo, we are continuously investing in developing technology that is more sustainable. We don t think there is one global fuel for the future, but believe that energy sources will depend on regional conditions. Therefore we look at many options at the same time. Over the last 30 years, Volvo s diesel engines have become much cleaner and reduced fuel consumption. We are doing all we can to improve diesel technology still further, for example offering biodiesel and looking into DME. We are also doing advanced R&D work on hybrid vehicles for BRT operations. BRT reduces bus traffic BRT is based on buses, but this does not mean it is a traditional bus-based public transport system. It relies on high-capacity articulated and bi-articulated buses, which can take as many as 270 passengers at a time. The result is that compared to traditional bus systems, BRT cuts the number of buses used although more people are transported and in a much faster way. Consequently, fewer emissions are produced and fuel consumption is lowered.
Challenge 4: To supervise and maintain public transport systems is often an overwhelming job.
ITS4mobility is an intelligent transport system that gives a total overview of the operations. solution: A telematics system that gives you total control of the system and fleet. ITS4mobility, an intelligent transport system ITS4mobility was designed by Volvo to give BRT its unique level of productivity. A standard product, it guarantees simplicity, quality and fast commissioning. The system is divided into modules in order to be scalable and adapted to particular needs. Detailed, real-time traffic control ITS4mobility enables traffic controllers to monitor, regulate, register and analyse operations in detail. The control centre can monitor the real-time position and status of every vehicle and can also have continuous contact with drivers via two-way text messaging. The system makes it easier for both drivers and traffic controllers to fulfil timetables or headways and react to disturbances. ITS4mobility helps you achieve efficient service planning and driving performance. The more control that authorities and operators have over the system and vehicles, the better and more cost-effective the service will be. Volvo believes in this fact and features ITS4mobility, meaning traffic control, fleet management and travel information. Streamlined fleet management ITS4mobility makes it possible to monitor driver and vehicle performance and the information can be stored for statistical analysis. Crucial vehicle data such as fuel consumption, speed, revolutions per minute (rpm) and distances can be reviewed and sorted per driver. The system can also maximise uptime through service planning. Services such as workshop development, training for mechanics, parts availability and service contracts are also available from Volvo in order to give a complete solution that increases uptime and productivity.
Challenge 5: Using public transport can be chaotic, tedious and risky.
Real-time travel information is provided at bus stops. solution: Make the experience manageable, comfortable and safe. For people to choose public transport over the car, they need to be offered a system providing short waiting and travel times, travel information, comfort, safety and security. And all this at a low price. BRT can meet these demands. Short travel time BRT is designed to achieve maximum effectiveness at every stage. Travel time is minimised by a number of different factors, not least a high frequency service together with high commercial speeds. Pre-ticketing and easy boarding are other factors cutting down on travel time. Real-time travel information Using Volvo s ITS4mobility system means passengers will always be well-informed about their journey, both before the trip starts and while en route. Real-time travel information is provided on board vehicles as well as at bus stops, via the internet and mobile devices. This gives the passenger a sense of control and the possibility of early and continuous journey planning. Comfort and accessibility Level boarding, using our low- or high-platform buses, makes it easy to board and alight. This not only minimises waiting time, but also ensures easy access for The BRT concept offers convenience, comfort and safety. disabled people and passengers with children or baggage. Using modern, functional buses and bus stops further enhances travel comfort. Safe passage To ensure that passengers are not exposed to unnecessary risk, our buses fulfil Volvo s renowned standard in quality and safety, integrated with security functionality from ITS4mobility.

Volvo has the prod ucts and services to partner you all the way through the conceptualization, planning, implementation and post-implementation phases of the system.
