For public transport even on the street, electrification seems the obvious alternative to keep pace with urban growth and to care for the city environment at the same time, using fully electric or electric hybrid buses. With the right charging technology, the advantages of electrified buses can be utilized: less energy consumption in com parison to buses with combustion engines, use of renewable energy, less noise, lower particle emissions, less CO 2, lower lifecycle costs, and reliable service. 5 Siemens Offboard High Power Charger After analyzing numerous use cases of bus service operators all over the world, Siemens decided to develop a charging solution that offers substantial advantages to all parties involved in electrifying bus services. Using latest Siemens technology, the bus batteries are charged in regular intervals for three to nine minutes before returning to service. The charging duration depends on the bus in service, driving distances, potential traffic congestion, climate conditions, and the size of the batteries. The idea is to keep buses on the road in well-proven service operation all day long, instead of restricting service in terms of passenger capacity or mileage and facing other consequences as a result of overdimensioned batteries, such as increased power demand in the depot. By charging just enough for traveling all day from terminus to terminus (or to the next available charging point), the Offboard High Power Charger adds a lot of flexibility to ebus service. Since the buses occupy the charging station only for a few minutes, the Offboard High Power Charger is ideal for high-frequency operation conditions, as the charging infrastructure can be used by several buses per hour, even of different manufacturers. The charging equipment consists of a tech nical cabinet and the actual charging pole, which is ideally installed at the termini or wherever the route allows for a few minutes stopover. The charging pole is positioned close to the curb, representing a visible expression of your traffic engineering and design innovation and as a landmark for the futuristic appeal of your city. Alternatively, the charging station can be integrated indoors in existing bus terminals or buildings. The technical equipment can be installed in existing premises or in enclosures close to the new or existing bus stations. 8 Offboard charging If you do not have an overhead line system installed in your city (or close to the termini of your bus lines), then offboard charging is your method of choice. Offboard charging means that, all necessary equipment for charging is not installed on the bus, but stored in the technical cabinet next to the charging pole. The advantages are obvious: more space and less weight and complexity on the bus, without compromizing passenger capacity. What s more, there is no need to buy the high-power charging equipment with each vehicle, and maintenance work can concentrate on the technical cabinets. In addition, our high-power charging infrastructure is designed for a service life exceeding 20 years and offers comprehensive support for buses of different manufacturers and types right from the start and for years to come. 9 Onboard charging Some operators have a well-established tram or trolleybus network in their cities. Therefore, they might want to use their existing electrical infrastructure for recharging their buses. With onboard charging, all necessary charging equipment is installed aboard the vehicle, including a pantograph for establishing the contact to the overhead line system. In this case, the charging equipment on the bus adapts to the electric parameters of the catenary system, again with obvious advantages. Charging such an ebus only requires the installation of a 2-pole catenary part. 10 Hamburger Hochbahn AG, Innovation Line 109 The Innovation Line 109 in Hamburg features among other systems two diesel-electric hybrid buses from Volvo, and charging stations electrically equipped by Siemens. The offboard opportunity charging system consists of charging poles at the termini and a fully automated six-to-eight-minute charging process, once the bus is positioned under the charging pole and the handbrake is activated. With Innovation Line 109, an innercity line extending approximately 10 km, we are showing what we can and want to achieve with innovative drives thanks to suitable charging technology an attractive public transportation system for a higher quality of life in the city. Thanks to intelligent opportunity charging technology, Wiener Linien can increase performance and ensure a long service life for vehicle batteries. In Vienna, 12 buses electrically equipped by Siemens were commissioned by Wiener Linien for scheduled service in The buses feature an onboard opportunity charging system and recharge for 10 minutes at every terminus by connecting to the overhead lines of the Wiener Linien tram lines. 11
