3 3 GBAS Ground Based Augmentation System GBAS (Ground Based Augmentation System) is a satellitebased precision approach aid for aircraft landings GBAS works with the satellite-based GPS navigation system According to ICAO/Eurocontrol planning, GBAS will in the long term replace the current ILS (Instrumental Landing System), due to increased accuracy and lower operational costs. 4 4 How Does GBAS Work? Functions of the GBAS Ground Station 1. GBAS Function: Ground-based correction of the GPS data sent from the satellite. The inaccuracy, which we know from car navigation systems, needs to be corrected. The GPS satellites send positioning data to the GBAS Ground Station, where the signals are corrected and sent to the aircraft. This is why GBAS works more precisely than the GPS in cars. 2. GBAS Function: Transmission of approach path data The details of the approach path are sent to the aircraft on final approach. Source: DFS
5 5 The GBAS Ground Station Consists of Four GPS- Receivers (RSMU), One Transmitter (VDB) and a Shelter Shelter GPS Receiver VDB Transmitter

7 7 Overall Advantages of GBAS in General (1/2) One GBAS Ground Station is sufficient for all of the airport s runways. Up to 49 approach procedures can be transmitted from one GBAS Ground Station. Due to a more flexible approach path adaption (of the glide slope and path) noise-reduced approaches are possible by avoiding flying over densely populated areas. Animation/Foto: Honeywell
8 8 Overall Advantages of GBAS (2/2) The operational costs are lower compared to ILS installations (Instrumental Landing System), especially because maintenance is less complex. In contrast to ILS there is no need for regular test and calibration (measuring) flights. Due to the increased accuracy, the gaps between approaching aircraft can be decreased. Greater effects are noticeable during CATII/III conditions. In particular, the above mentioned point as well as more stable signals lead to increased safety in the final approach phase.
9 9 GBAS Benefits for Frankfurt Airport Specific Examples GBAS will become widespread. On a long-term basis, ICAO plans to replace the current Instrument Landing Systems ILS with GBAS. From the very beginning, As one of the global experts and pioneers of GBAS, Fraport can actively shape this development worldwide! The following advantages result for the entire runway system (5 thresholds) on a short-term basis: The noise-reducing approach with a glide slope of 3.2 degrees can also be offered for the south and center runways. In case of an ILS failure, a second system is available for maintaining FRA s runway capacity. The ongoing development of GBAS development for CAT II/III operations means positive capacity and economic effects for Frankfurt.
10 10 Effective September 3, 2014, Frankfurt Airport Becomes Europe s First Hub Airport to Offer GBAS: Five GBAS CAT1 Approach Procedures (Glide Slope 3.0 )
11 11 The Rate of Equipping Aircraft with GBAS Will Increase Continiously During the Next Years B737: GBAS as an option B787: GBAS standard equipment B747-8: GBAS standard equipment B777: GBAS licensing expected in 2017 B757/767: GBAS retrofitting being considered A319/320/321: GBAS as an option A380 GBAS: as an option A330/A340: GBAS GBAS licensing scheduled for the end of 2013 A350 GBAS: as an option at entry into service
12 12 By 2020, FRA s Percentage of GBAS-Equipped Flights Will Rise to More Than 50% In 2013, about 4% of all movements at FRA were flown with aircraft equipped with a GBAS system. This figure is expected to rise to 52% between 2020 and %* of all movements 4 % of all movements 246,036 GBAS Movements at FRA 17,820 GBAS Movements at FRA *Requirement: Equipping LH A320neo fleet with GBAS
13 13 GBAS and Lufthansa The complete long-haul fleets of Boeing B747-8 (19 aircraft) and Airbus A380 (15 aircraft) are already equipped and operational with GBAS receivers. Activation of GBAS for A330, A346 and B744 (some versions) aircraft is possible but expensive. Newly ordered A320 Neo and A350 aircraft will be equipped with GBAS receivers. Activation of these receivers will also be costly.
14 14 Alliance for Active Noise Abatement Is Being Steadily Implemented: is a Further Initiative Implementation of GBAS@FRA in Four steps 1. ILS look-alike approaches with a glide slope of 3.0 for the southern, center and northwest parallel runways (5 thresholds). This procedure is already certificated and operating in Bremen, Germany. 2. Based on results of the 3.2 trial operation on FRA s Runway Northwest, the glide slope of GBAS Approaches could be increased to Development and implementation of the legal requirements (BMVBS, ICAO, etc.) for independent approaches in combination with ILS/GBAS and GBAS/GBAS. 4. Long-term realization of curved approaches at peak times to fly around densely populated areas to achieve additional noise reduction in the vicinity of the approach paths.
