The current enrollment of 2,550 is right at capacity, with all classrooms utilized every period. Modernization of the main building begins this year. Crews will reinforce the foundation, expand the library, and update all restrooms and classrooms. During construction, all English and social studies classes will be located in new interim housing on the north side of campus. We intend to reduce the impact of this construction project on classroom instruction. LIBRARY: The MHS library is under renovation. All reference materials and online resources are available, but fewer can work in the smaller, interim library. However, classes still use the library s resources, and the librarian brings resource materials to the classrooms. A part-time librarian and technician and a full-time clerk assist and teachers. COMPUTERS: Marina is a Digital High School. Each classroom has at least three computers. There are also four computer labs, three Pentium labs (two in the business department), and a G4 Mac lab. Twenty wireless laptop computers are also available for student use, at the request of teachers. TEXTBOOKS: Marina has spent $600,000 purchasing new textbooks over the past four years, in an effort to give our the most recent, up-to-date information. All textbook copyrights are dated after 1998, and every student has a book for every assigned class. Parent Involvement Marina has strong parent and community involvement. Hundreds of parents help out with major events such as registration, textbook distribution, and yearbook and cap and gown distribution through the Volunteers in Public Schools (VIPS). Hundreds more are involved in the many booster organizations that support our cocurricular activities. The school site council, PTSA, Grad Night, and the Educational Foundation are other important organizations that involve parents and community members in the governance of the school, fundraising for the classrooms, and providing important programs for and parents. Climate for Learning HOMEWORK: All teachers assign homework, which varies based on the type and level of the course. Teachers outline homework practices and policies in their Classroom Expectations booklets, which they distribute to each student. Many teachers have Web pages that list the daily assignments and homework for the week. ATTENDANCE: Students were in class about 95% of the time. DISCIPLINE: Marina s discipline and attendance policies are well articulated and enforced through interventions such as detention, Saturday School, in-house suspension, and school suspension. Conflict mediation is used to help resolve their problems and reduce suspensions. Students are honored quarterly with Most Improved Student awards from their teachers, and the Principal s Honor Roll is published each semester for earning a 3.2 GPA or above. DISCIPLINE FACTOR DISTRICT Suspensions per Expulsions per At times we find it necessary to suspend or expel who break certain school rules. The number of suspensions and expulsions for the year is reported here.
3 Marina High School Created in December 2001 Page 3 These numbers reflect both our rules and how strictly we enforce them. We report the rate of suspension incidents per 100. SAFETY: Eight part-time supervision aides and one full-time school safety officer monitor the school grounds and locker rooms. Marina is a closed campus, and only juniors and seniors are allowed to go home for lunch, with parental permission. Fire, earthquake, and disaster drills are conducted twice a year. Facts about our school s safety are available from the California Safe School Assessment. The information below about property crimes, crimes against people, and drug and alcohol incidents is drawn from this report, which we file every six months. The number of incidents per 1000 is reported in the graph below. This way of reporting results makes it easier to compare our school with other high schools. 6 Marina High School Created in December 2001 Page 6 STUDENTS NOT YET PROFICIENT IN ENGLISH SCORING ABOVE : This view of test scores examines how well who are not yet proficient in English performed (as opposed to the previous section, which looks at only English-proficient ). Remember, this year s SAT-9 test was given in English to who don t yet read English fluently. Obviously, their test results will reflect both their partial mastery of English, as well as their knowledge of the subject matter tested. The percent of Marina s still learning English who scored above average was: in reading seven percent (compared to four percent statewide); 19 percent in language (13 percent statewide); in math 43 percent (21 percent statewide); in history/social studies 31 percent (18 percent statewide); and in science 24 percent (13 percent statewide). Students learning English did best in math. Academic Performance Index, Spring 2001 The Academic Performance Index (API) is a way of comparing schools, based on their STAR test scores. The index was created in 1998 by Governor Davis and the Legislature, and is now used as a basis for awarding money to schools that show progress. Marina s API was 753 (out of 1000), based on the spring 2001 SAT-9 test results. This was an improvement of nine points compared to its prior year s API. About 98 percent of took the test, which did meet the state s required participation rate of 90 percent. This school did meet its assigned growth target, but did not qualify for bonus funds. Just for reference, 29 percent of high schools statewide met their growth targets, and 22 percent were eligible for bonus funds.
