2 Every school in California is required by state law to publish a (SARC), by February 1 of each year. The SARC contains information about the condition and performance of each California public school. For more information about SARC requirements, see the California Department of Education (CDE) SARC Web page at For additional information about the school, parents and community members should contact the school principal or the district office. DataQuest DataQuest is an online data tool located on the CDE DataQuest Web page at that contains additional information about this school and comparisons of the school to the district, the county, and the state. Specifically, DataQuest is a dynamic system that provides reports for accountability (e.g., state Academic Performance Index [API], federal Adequate Yearly Progress [AYP]), test data, enrollment, high school graduates, dropouts, course enrollments, staffing, and data regarding English learners. Internet Access I. Data and Access Internet access is available at public libraries and other locations that are publicly accessible (e.g., the California State Library). Access to the Internet at libraries and public locations is generally provided on a first-come, first-served basis. Other use restrictions may include the hours of operation, the length of time that a workstation may be used (depending on availability), the types of software programs available on a workstation, and the ability to print documents. Additional Information For further information regarding the data elements and terms used in the SARC see the Academic Performance Index Reports Information Guide located on the CDE API Web page at II. 3 School Description and Mission Statement (School Year ) Our mission is to provide a nurturing environment that fosters curiosity, critical thinking, and a passion for learning, and that allows students to grow into resourceful and responsible citizens. Through teacher and student interaction, students will become effective problem solvers, lifelong learners, and successful communicators. We welcome parents to visit our school and find out more about our programs. Parents are kept regularly informed of their child's academic progress and are welcomed to get involved by volunteering their time and/or service. We are always looking for volunteers! Over 50 percent of our students were involved in some type of co-curricular activity. Our athletic teams work hard and display sportsmanship and spirit, exemplifying our motto. Our music department, AVID Program, Leadership class, and sport teams brought home local recognition. These traditions of excellence extend back several years and reflect our school s commitment to excellence. Gustine Middle School, is dedicated to helping our students complete the transition from elementary to high school. As a school community, our ongoing goals are to reinforce the values of respect, and integrity. The school will utilize educational methods that reflect a constantly changing, diverse, and highly technological society. We offer a new vision for our students with a strong emphasis on the academic and self-management skills needed for our students to meet and exceed academic expectations. At Gustine Middle School we are committed to ensuring that all students leave with the knowledge, critical skills and attitudes essential to becoming contributing members of society. The Gustine Middle School community has always prided itself on its commitment to providing a student centered educational environment. Students are provided a rich standard based curriculum which offers a variety of challenging classes that motivate learning. We want our diverse community of learners to embrace current and future academic achievement as they become productive citizens prepared for the next educational level. Gustine Middle School serves a population of approximately 460 students in grades six, seven and eight. The school's staff consists of a principal, three office staff members, 20 teachers, one campus supervisor, a library media aide, a computer lab tech, and two classroom aides. Gustine Middle School provides a challenging instructional program and sets high standards with the belief that all students can achieve and succeed with support. At Gustine Middle School we feel that "Failure is not an option!" Manuel Bettencourt, Principal Opportunities for Parental Involvement (School Year ) Gustine Middle School encourages parents to become involved with school activities. Parent's Club, School Site Council, and English Learners Advisory Commitee are some of the ways in which parents can stay informed. In order to help keep our parents informed of their child's progress, we now have our student's grades available online. Our "Blackboard Connect " communication program, is used to send out messages by phone to all of our parents informing them of dates, programs, attendance etc. Standardized Testing and Reporting Program III. Student Performance 1/28/2014 Powered by SchoolCity, Inc Page 3 of 14

4 The Standardized Testing and Reporting (STAR) Program consists of several key components, including: California Standards Tests(CSTs), which include English-language arts (ELA) and mathematics in grades two through eleven; science in grades five, eight, and nine through eleven; and history-social science in grades eight, and nine through eleven. California Modified Assessment (CMA), an alternate assessment that is based on modified achievement standards in ELA for grades three through eleven; mathematics for grades three through seven, Algebra I, and Geometry; and science in grades five and eight, and Life Science in grade ten. The CMA is designed to assess those students whose disabilities preclude them from achieving grade-level proficiency on an assessment of the California content standards with or without accommodations. California Alternate Performance Assessment (CAPA), includes ELA and mathematics in grades two through eleven, and science for grades five, eight, and ten. The CAPA is given to those students with significant cognitive disabilities whose disabilities prevent them from taking either the CSTs with accommodations or modifications or the CMA with accommodations. The assessments under the STAR Program show how well students are doing in relation to the state content standards. On each of these assessments, student scores are reported as performance levels. For detailed information regarding the STAR Program results for each grade and performance level, including the percent of students not tested, see the CDE STAR Results Web site at Standardized Testing and Reporting Results for All Students Three-Year Comparison Percent of Students Scoring at Proficient or Advanced (meeting or exceeding the state standards) Subject School District State English-Language Arts 45% 51% 50% 42% 44% 44% 54% 56% 55% Mathematics 38% 41% 46% 36% 38% 36% 49% 50% 50% Science 87% 93% 69% 62% 61% 52% 57% 60% 59% History-Social Science 48% 58% 36% 31% 33% 31% 48% 49% 49% Note: Scores are not shown when the number of students tested is ten or less, either because the number of students in this category is too small for statistical accuracy or to protect student privacy. 1/28/2014 Powered by SchoolCity, Inc Page 4 of 14

6 California Physical Fitness Test Results (School Year ) The California Physical Fitness Test (PFT) is administered to students in grades five, seven, and nine only. This table displays by grade level the percent of students meeting the fitness standards for the most recent testing period. For detailed information regarding this test, and comparisons of a school s test results to the district and state, see the CDE PFT Web page at Grade Level Percent of Students Meeting Four of Six Fitness Standards Percent of Students Meeting Five of Six Fitness Standards Percent of Students Meeting Six of Six Fitness Standards 5 ---% ---% ---% % 21.6% 38.1% 9 ---% ---% ---% Note: Scores are not shown when the number of students tested is ten or less, either because the number of students in this category is too small for statistical accuracy or to protect student privacy. Academic Performance Index IV. Accountability The Academic Performance Index (API) is an annual measure of state academic performance and progress of schools in California. API scores range from 200 to 1,000, with a statewide target of 800. For detailed information about the API, see the CDE API Web page at Academic Performance Index Ranks Three-Year Comparison This table displays the school's statewide and similar schools' API ranks. The statewide API rank ranges from 1 to 10. A statewide rank of 1 means that the school has an API score in the lowest ten percent of all schools in the state, while a statewide rank of 10 means that the school has an API score in the highest ten percent of all schools in the state. The similar schools API rank reflects how a school compares to 100 statistically matched "similar schools." A similar schools rank of 1 means that the school's academic performance is comparable to the lowest performing ten schools of the 100 similar schools, while a similar schools rank of 10 means that the school's academic performance is better than at least 90 of the 100 similar schools. 14 Types of Services Funded (Fiscal Year ) Our school has access to social workers, speech and hearing specialists through our Merced County Department of Education. These specialists work part time at our school and some may work at more than one school in our district. Their schedules will change as our students' needs change. Gifted and Talented Education: Educators identify academically gifted or talented students based on teacher recommendations and tests for inclusion in enrichment programs. (GATE) The Gate program provides a challenging curriculum and instruction to gifted and talented students capable of achieving significantly beyond the level of their peers. GATE funds are used to design and deliver a customized program for individuals or groups of gifted and talented students. Special Education Program: The goals of our Special Education Program are to meet the needs of every student, to make progress toward state standards, and to fulfill the obligation of students' Individualized Educational Program (IEP). Special educational students are included in the regular program at Gustine Middle School. They have full access to all services and programs, including the core curriculum. Students with special needs are assigned to our resource specialist teachers who provide individual academic support and in the regular classroom. Two special education aides also assist students in the special education classroom and in the regular classroom.
