2 Part II Course Details 1. Abstract To continue the course of Medical Physics & Biomedical Engineering I, the aim of this course is to reinforce the knowledge of physics in medicine. The course materials mainly cover the application of physics in vision, cardiovascular function, and neuromuscular coordination of the human body at an intermediate level. Particular emphasis is given to generation and detection of electrical and magnetic signals in the body. 2. Course Intended Learning Outcomes (CILOs) (CILOs state what the student is expected to be able to do at the end of the course according to a given standard of performance.) Resting and action potentials of neurons. Physics of the cardiovascular system. Electrical activity of the heart. Common cardiovascular diseases. Electrical signals from muscles (electromyogram EMG), heart (electrocardiogram ECG), brain (electroencephalogram EEG), and eye (electroretinogram-erg and electrooculogram-eog) Biopotentials or electric properties measurement such as different instruments for EEG, ECG, physiology measurement, cardio-monitoring, pacemaker and functional electric stimulation Magnetic signals from heart and brain such as magnetocardiogram and magnetoencephalogram Applications of electricity in medicine in aspects of diagnosis and treatment Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and functional MRI (fmri).
