1 COMMUNITY COLLEGE OF CITY UNIVERSITY CITY UNIVERSITY OF HONG KONG Information on a Course offered by Division of Applied Science and Technology Course Title: (English) Application for Portable Devices (Chinese) Course Code: AST20207 Credit Units: 3 Level: A2 Medium of Instruction: English Pre-requisites: Nil Pre-cursors: DCO21105 Equivalent Courses: DCO20207 Exclusive Courses: Nil Course Duration: One Semester Course Aims: This course aims at introducing students the latest technologies of mobile apps development and providing them with the techniques and skills in the design and development of mobile applications using well-known software development tools and Application Programming Interfaces (APIs). Course Intended Learning Outcomes (CILOs) Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. Explain fundamental concepts of mobile application design and implementation; 2. Select suitable platforms and tools for different applications; 3. Construct applications for portable devices with well-known software development tools and Application Programming Interfaces (APIs); and 4. Identify the strengths and limitations of different portable application platforms. 5. Apply documentation and indentation of source code and able to present them verbally.

Introduction to Application Development for Portable Devices Mobile operating systems; Architecture and framework of different mobile platforms; Development platforms and development tools; Programming language binding; Simulator and emulator; Development life cycle; Model-View-Controller (MVC); Market trends. 2. Hardware and Software Support for Portable Devices Processors and memory; Touch / Multi-touch screen; Communication channels (GSM /EDGE, CDMA, Bluetooth, GPS, Wi-Fi); Storage; Device specific hardware (Camera, Dual webcams, Gesture recognizer, Accelerometer, Gyroscope, Digital compass, Proximity sensor and Light sensor); Firmware. 3. Programming Fundamentals of Mobile Applications Application components and programming fundamentals; Application lifecycle; Event handling; Local data and remote data access; Data synchronization; Graphics, drawing and animation; Text and web; Application Programming Interfaces (APIs). 4. Advanced Mobile Application Design Network-enabled, camera-specific, audio-based and sensors-based input; Geo-location. 6. Lectures provide an in-depth introduction to the technologies of mobile apps development as well as programming essentials. Useful and interesting examples will be given in parallel to the lessons to demonstrate the concepts and ideas.

5 b. Laboratory exercises will be given to provide students with opportunities to practice the techniques learnt in class. c. Programming project enables students to develop their own mobile apps. In addition, students will be given an opportunity to present their work verbally. Laboratory Exercises 25 Students are required to construct small-scale apps with well-known development tools, SDKs and APIs. iii. Tests 10 Students will be assessed on their understanding of mobile technologies as well as the effectiveness of handling all programming fundamentals for mobile apps development. iv. Programming Project 35 Students will be asked to work on a course project, which consists of the majority elements taught or discussed in class. In addition to the final product submission, students have to submit a proposal stating what they are going to do and give a short presentation to demonstrate and explain their ideas of work.
