3 WELCOME Thank you for your interest in Nelson College for Girls Preparatory School. Standards, expectations, academic challenges, co-curricula activities and pastoral care are presented in a family atmosphere, that fosters a pride in aiming for excellence. Our vision is that each girl becomes the best she can, is valued for her contribution to our school, and is a happy, confident, independent learner and thinker who will stand out in her secondary school education and beyond. Although our school is small in size, we offer many opportunities for our students. With a highly respected secondary school campus adjacent to our facilities, learners are exposed to a contemporary college culture and infrastructure from Year 7 until their transition to Year 9. Nelson College for Girls has a very proud history of 129 years. Our young women emerge with confidence and a sense of pride in achieving to the best of their abilities, often gaining inspiration from the successes of the women who have preceded them. The College motto Pietas, Probitas et Sapientia Loyalty, Honesty and Wisdom sums up well the values and essence of our school. Girls education in girls schools has many well researched advantages. Girls learn well in an environment where relationships are valued highly, strong inter-personal skills are encouraged and where issues are explored collaboratively. Self-esteem, which can be adversely affected during pre-adolescence and adolescence without appropriate support, is central to the confidence of the learner. Our committed staff see our programme as a specialised two year pathway to nurture girls to be prepared to become effective citizens, who will learn to challenge, to question and to become involved, knowing that they have the right to inquire and the responsibility to care for themselves, humanity and their environment. Students are taught in well-resourced classrooms and enjoy some excellent specialist facilities, such as, the Gymnasium, Library, Computer Suites, Hall, Music Suites, Art and Technology Suites, Performance Suite and Science Laboratories. Our seamless approach and preparation for secondary education at Nelson College for Girls Each class maintains a relationship with Year 13 students who are their Tutor Mentors. These senior students visit their Preparatory class each week and are a valuable link between the Preparatory School and the College Excellent EOTC (Education Outside the Classroom) opportunities Upon entering the school each Year 7 student is allocated a Year 8 buddy. This helps our new students to adapt to their new environment quickly and develops the Year 8 students leadership skills. 5 The tutor teacher in the Preparatory School teaches the following curriculum: NZ CURRICULUM LEARNING AREAS English Mathematics Social Sciences Health Physical Education Education Outside the Classroom Reading, Writing, Word Study, Spelling, Oral and Visual Language. Number, Geometry, Algebra, Measurement and Statistics. Curriculum requirements at levels 3/4 in a variety of topics covering NZ Curriculum requirements. Including Self Defence course, DARE (Drug Abuse Resistance Education), Keeping Ourselves Safe, Kia Kaha Use of the College gymnasium and sports facilities to ensure a wide range of physical skills are taught. Overnight/day trips which utilise the diverse environmental opportunities in the Nelson region. CURRICULUM OVERVIEW Specialist Teachers in the College teach the following subjects: Science Extension of students knowledge of general science. College laboratory facilities are utilised. SPECIALIST SUBJECTS The Arts Visual Art Drama Music Technology Hard Materials Foods Materials Textiles Graphics Aims to develop students skills using a range of techniques and media. College Art and drama studios are utilised. Covering instrumental, choral, composition and preparation for performance recitals. Students develop practical skills and apply these in a variety of problem solving contexts. An introductory course into Graphic communication and design. Classes are held in College Graphics suites. Languages Information Technology (IT) Year 7/8 Maori, Japanese, French, German. Includes an introductory course in the manipulation of multimedia, internet and publishing programmes.

7 The Preparatory School students are able to participate in a wide range of co-curricula activities and use the many superb facilities available in the College. The Preparatory School encourages students to participate in individual and team sports, played competitively within the school, as well as in interschool competitions and regional and national tournaments. 8 CULTURAL OPPORTUNITIES: Every student has special talents they may be academic but they may also be in drama, music or the visual arts. Talented teachers, visiting musicians and artists, the opportunity to attend exhibitions and to benefit from the local artistic talent that the Nelson region enjoys make for an environment where talent is nurtured, challenged and where achievement results. Opportunities for cultural involvement at Prep include: Preparatory School - performance and recital occasions Drama Club after school (including Shakespeare competitions) Preparatory School Band and extension with College bands and orchestra College Maori Culture Group Preparatory Choir - extension opportunities in other College Choirs House Drama/Music Stage Challenge (dependent on audition success in Junior School) Individual and/or group music tuition in a wide range of instruments, as well as singing. 9 Every effort is made to ensure a full and fair selection process. Prospectus folders containing application forms are available from the Preparatory School Office, online ( or from the College main reception area. A $30 processing fee is required with completed application forms. Letters of invitation are sent to prospective students and their parents on our database inviting them to attend an Information Evening prior to their proposed entry. Parents and their daughters are welcome to make an appointment to meet staff and view facilities at any time. Interested applicants and their parents will be invited to an interview in the year prior to their proposed entry. Supporting information required for applications will be included in the letter sent inviting student s to their interview. Personal profiles and standardised test results will be requested by the Prep School, from origin schools. The Preparatory School Head Teacher may contact an applicant s current teacher for elaboration on supporting information if further clarification is required. All applicants parents will be notified by post regarding selection or non-selection. Unsuccessful applicants may be placed on a supplementary waiting list which would be utilised in the event of a place being declined. Confirmation of placement acceptances will be required within three weeks of placement offers. These will require a $500 deposit which will be non-refundable and deducted from the tuition fee account. An orientation afternoon will be held in November each year. APPLICATION AND SELECTION

10 Tuition fees are set for each academic year that the student is enrolled at the Preparatory School. The fee covers tuition by classroom teachers and the College specialist programme delivery. Students will incur other expenses such as trips, sports fees, EOTC, music tuition, IT levy and stationery purchases. These personal items will be charged monthly to the student s account. A $ non-refundable deposit is payable on acceptance of a place. This amount is deducted from the initial fees account. Tuition fees can be paid by cheque, online banking or Visa/Mastercard.
