2 PART I: GENERAL INFORMATION DESCRIPTION OF TOWN - SHORT HISTORY AND LOCATION Lublin has always been one of Poland s most important cities. Due to its geographical location in the eastern part of Poland as well as its history, Lublin has often played the role of a bridge between the East and West. Interestingly, it also often took the lead at crucial historical moments when Poland s fate hung in balance. In 1569 the Lublin Union was signed here, uniting Poland into a single political entity and creating the largest European state of the time. In the final days of World War I, Poland s first independent government was founded in Lublin. It was here again that the provisional communist government was installed by the Soviets in July 1944, during the last stages of World War II. Lublin is also considered by some to be the cradle of Solidarity; the avalanche of strikes that in 1980 spread throughout Poland and eventually led to the Gdansk agreements began in Lublin. Since World War II, Lublin has expanded three-fold and today is the largest and most important industrial, commercial, and educational centre in eastern Poland. It is no exaggeration to call Lublin a city of universities. At present, Lublin has 6 universities and a few colleges with a total of over 70,000 students, while the population of Lublin is approximately 400,000. Adding the rich and thriving cultural life that imparts a unique artistic flavour to the atmosphere of Lublin, the city appears to be an ideal place to spend a part of the student life. Additional information may be found on the following web page: - MAIN LOCAL/CULTURAL EVENTS Cultural festivals and events include: - European Cuisine Festival in Lublin (Culinary and cultural festival bringing together European flavours) - Masterpieces of Chamber Music (the concert series, outstanding performances of most superb musicians and small-audience groups from Poland and abroad); - International Dance Theatre Meetings (individual and group performances, dance workshops conducted by artists). - HOW TO REACH TOWN (LINKS FROM THE NEAREST AIRPORT, TRAIN OR COACH STATIONS) - from Swidnik Airport to Lublin (approx. 15 km) you can travel directly by taking a train or a bus. - from the International Airport F. Chopin in Warsaw you can travel directly to Lublin (approx. 170 km) by taking a train. We advise you to take a train, city bus no. 175 or a taxi to the Warsaw train station. - the Central Railway Station is situated in the very heart of Warsaw. All inter-city services arrive at the Central Railway Station (Warszawa Centralna). It is also there that you can change for Lublin there are quite frequent connections (approx. every two hours). The trip takes about three hours. Please take only fast trains. - there is also a possibility of getting to Lublin by mini buses which leave from a parking near the Palace of Science and Culture (Pałac Kultury i Nauki) or Marriott Hotel. 2

3 - TRANSPORT IN TOWN (BRIEF INFORMATION ON THE MAIN MEANS OF TRANSPORT AVAILABLE) Lublin has a good network of buses and trolley-buses, which connects the city centre (where the campus is situated) with all parts of the city. It runs quite frequently until approx pm, depending on the line. Night buses run every one hour from 11:30pm to 2:30am. Tickets are available at kiosks, ticket automats, or from drivers. Direct connection: central railway station (in Lublin) to city centre: bus 13 and trolleybus 150, central bus terminal (in Lublin) to city centre: buses 5, 10, 18, 31, 57. You can pick up a taxi either from a taxi rank or by calling a taxi service. SHORT DESCRIPTION OF THE ORGANISING INSTITUTION The school was established in The programme of the school, which remains within the same university s structure, has been evaluating from a basic course of Polish culture and language a quarter of a century ago to its present shape. The institution now offers courses lasting from two weeks to an academic year which are at different levels of intensity and language proficiency. The language classes are complemented with lectures presenting Polish culture: Polish literature, history, history of the art, economy and socio-political issues. Additional meetings and trips are also organised. The school also runs special individual courses, on request of individuals or companies. The staff of the school consists of academic teachers from the Catholic University of Lublin and other Polish universities as well as Polish Academy of Sciences. We have been closely co-operating with many institutions in Poland and abroad. The largest groups of almost four thousand students, who have attended the school s courses so far, come from the USA and Germany, Canada, Great Britain and France. They are mainly students, businessmen and university teachers. The John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin (KUL), founded in 1918, is one of the oldest universities in Poland and is the only one possessing full state and Church rights. At present, KUL enrols over 18,000 students in its various programmes, seven faculties. The university has a reputation for high standards of education and research, the profile of which is determined by humanistic tradition of the university as well as openness to the needs of a contemporary man. ACCOMMODATION - SHORT DESCRIPTION OF THE ACCOMMODATION OFFERED (HOTEL, APARTMENTS, STUDENT HALLS, OTHERS; IF THERE ARE COOKING FACILITIES) AND ON THE RENT TO BE PAID PER WEEK The students are offered single or double-occupancy rooms in a university dormitory (Dom Akademicki Babilon ). There is one bathroom for each room and the apartments are equipped with sheets etc. Each room has access to the internet and telephone. 4 MEALS - SHORT DESCRIPTION ON THE SERVICES OFFERED (UNIVERSITY CANTEENS, RESTAURANTS, BARS, OTHERS) Meals are served three times a day in the student s canteen at the main university building. The meals will be specially prepared for the course participants, so special dietary arrangements are possible. Service is included. There are also many bars and restaurants situated next to the campus. EXTRA MURAL ACTIVITIES - SITE VISITS - a guided visit to Kazimierz Dolny, a picturesque 17 th century town, home to many artists; - a guided visit to the Zamoyski museum in Kozłówka, a former residence of the family with the 18 th c. palace park complex, and the only socialist-realism art gallery in Poland; - a guided visit in Lublin, including visits to some museums and galleries; - a guided visit to The Open-air Village Museum in Lublin; - a guided visit to the State Museum at Majdanek ex Nazi Concentration Camp; - SPORTS FACILITIES (SWIMMING, TENNIS, GYMNASIUM; OPENING DAYS AND AVAILABLE INFORMATION) The Polish University Sports Union, AZS, at KUL has several sports sections including: volleyball, table tennis, judo, soccer, basketball and tennis. All these sections have good separate facilities in a brand new sports gym complex. Its different parts are available everyday usually from 7.30 to upon prior reservation. - ENTERTAINMENT (CINEMA, THEATRE, ETC.; BRIEF INFORMATION ON PLACES AND STUDENT FACILITIES) The most popular cinemas in Lublin: - Cinema City situated in Lublin Plaza Shopping Centre; - Bajka, situated next to the university campus; - Chatka Żaka, close to the campus; Theatres: The main city venue for drama is the Juliusz Osterwa Theatre and Teatr Stary, featuring a wide range of classical and modern plays. There are also some avant-garde and experimental theatres, like: Gardzienice Centre of Theatrical Practice, Brama Grodzka Centre, the NN Theatre. There are also some discos and clubs worth recommending: Dom Kultury, Cztery Piętra, Shine For classical music, one can attend the Lublin Philharmonic Hall and The Musical Theatre. 4

August 29, 2013 September 25, 2013 LANGUAGE COMPONENT - SHORT DESCRIPTION OF LANGUAGE COMPONENT: OBJECTIVES AND TEACHING METHODS The main objective of the course is students mastering the structures and vocabulary, which enables them to communicate in Polish at the beginner s level. The attention will be paid to all language skills: speaking, reading, writing and listening. The programme will include: - the presentation of the Polish phonetic system exercises in pronunciation and reading; - polite and conventional phrases; - elements of name and verbal inflection, verbal complements, numbers (cardinal and ordinal), adjectives opposition, expressions of time and place, idioms and other expressions. The programme will cover some elements of Polish culture like: tradition, customs, history, literature, and geography. All lecturers will introduce particular fields of studies to students through oral presentations, with the usage of audio and visual materials, handouts and transparencies, discussions on chosen topics are planned for all the 6
