3 OPTOKON at Exhibitions A key marketing strategy in 2012 has been the decision to actively participate at key industry exhibitions, with the focus on events in territories where OPTOKON has or is expanding its presence. The expansion of the OPTOKON product portfolio into the harsh environment and military segments of the industry have given the company an even greater platform to promote harsh environmental data network products at global defence and security exhibitions such as SOFEX in Jordan and EUROSATORY in Paris. OPTOKON has significantly expanded its participation at exhibitions since first participating in MSV, the International Engineering Fair held annually at Brno Exhibition Centre and regarded as the most important industrial fair in Central Europe, shortly after company foundation. The first major foreign exhibition OPTOKON participated in was back in 2002 at ECOC, the fiber optic industry's European flagship exhibition, which was held in Denmark that year. Ever since, OPTOKON has participated in each and every ECOC to date, which is held in a different European country each year. Next years event will be held in London and OPTOKON has already secured its stand at the exhibition early booking of the most sought after positions being a privilege extended to companies who have regularly exhibited over the years. Participation at ECOC was shortly followed by participation at CeBIT, the world's largest telecommunications fair, held in Hannover, Germany each year. Again, since first participating in 2003, OPTOKON has consistently exhibited at the fair each year ever since. If ECOC is the flagship industry exhibition in Europe, then OFC is its American counterpart and OPTOKON took the decision to support its presence in the North American market by first exhibiting there in As with ECOC and CeBIT, the success of this has led to participation every year ever since. Participation at the right exhibition provides an excellent opportunity to meet new customers, conclude deals, meet and work with local distributors and partners and of course, promote the company brand. OPTOKON supports its branch facilities at exhibitions within their own territories, which this year includes EXPOTEL in Kiev led by OPTOKON Ukraine and MSPO in Kielce, Poland. When determining marketing strategy for 2012 the decision was made to expand OPTOKON presence at key exhibitions to 16 in 2012 and a similar number in 2013, a huge increase from previous years. This enables the company to fully promote key products from the product portfolio in those territories where the company has a solid presence, such as the Middle East via OPTOKON Arabian. This year has also seen the company participate at global defence and security exhibitions as well as industry and telecom themed exhibitions. Behind an exhibition So what happens after the decision has been made to exhibit? Exhibitions in 2012 are now organized very differently from exhibitions 10 years ago where all a company needed to do was book their stand, pay the invoice, ship the products over and turn up on the day. Each exhibition now offers a promotional support network ranging from sophisticated and expensive product promotion and sponsorship opportunities to ing e-newsletters to potential customers with company information, publishing company profiles online for visitors, issuing company press releases, all of which are reliant on the input of the exhibitor and the submission of their promotional marketing materials. Exhibition websites form an important opportunity to promote company brand and products before visitors have even stepped through the doors. OPTOKON Newsletter Page 3
4 OPTOKON News Therefore preparation begins early and participation is supported by a marketing strategy based on the key product segment to be promoted at each fair which involves issuing marketing materials to the exhibition organizers, promotion via OPTOKON social media and website and closer to the event, an ing campaign to invite visitors. Of course there is also the logistics of moving staff to the exhibition: transport, shipping products, accommodation and every minor detail such as exhibitor passes, car parking passes, arrival times etc. As many exhibitions run back-to-back or even simultaneously then the logistics, administration and organization around the events increases accordingly and can become incredibly complex as requirements and the number of staff involved increase. The aim, of course, is to ensure everything runs smoothly and no opportunities to support the staff manning the stand are missed while the opportunity to promote the company can be exploited to the maximum. 8 Course ideal for beginners/intermediate Learn how to splice, connectorize, test and troubleshoot optical fiber networks to increase efficiency, reliability, and on-the-job safety as well as reduce costs and downtime. The Light Brigade, the world's leading fiber optic training company, was founded in September 1986 to provide a growing population of fiber-optic end users in the Pacific Northwest expertise with the technology. The name "The Light Brigade" evolved from the concept of a group of specialists that could be called upon to assist clients with their fiber-optic needs and to serve as an engineering and installation consulting company. By the 1990s demand for training had grown, so the company minimized its contractor services, although high-level design and installation projects continued in order to acquire expertise for classroom applications. Over the last two decades, the company has trained more than 43,000 people from a wide variety of industries. The company is internationally recognized and is often invited to conduct short courses and to coordinate fiber-related special events at conferences around the world, including the annual OFC, Outside Plant Expo, ECOC and many others. The Light Brigade's instructors are technically skilled and have a wide variety of practical experience with fiber optic systems from small local telephone networks to sophisticated military facilities. Many have taught college-level courses in electronics and telecommunications. Others have built and operated fiberoptic networks or served as consultants for international companies. They are constantly evaluating new products and learning new techniques in order to maintain a leading-edge awareness of the industry. Course Outline DAY ONE/TWO 12 Hours Classroom Training Classroom training covers an introduction to fiber optics, basic fiber theory, optical fiber types, standards, cable types, cable structures, connectors, and mechanical/fusion splicing, cable and fiber management products. Classroom instruction also covers fiber-optic installation, testing, maintenance, restoration, and safety disciplines. A fiber-optic system design overview will also be taught, including how to develop an optical loss budget for multimode and single-mode systems. The course is instructor lead using power point presentation highlights key points of the training manual and uses interesting graphics, photographs and examples to explain concepts and practical application in the field. Several DVD chapters are used to take students into the field to provide practical use and explanation of the more technical aspects increasing student interest and retention of the class material. DAY TWO/THREE 12 Hours Hands-on Training (8:1 student to instructor) Workstations are set up as described on the following pages. Students spend approximately 3-4 hours at each workstation, rotating through each workstation until all tasks are completed. Students will break into groups with one instructor per group this low ratio ensures each student receives all the one-on-one training necessary to fully understand and learn how to perform fiber-optic installation, testing and troubleshooting in the field. This will be followed by a class review and certification testing. Further details of the Fiber Optic course can be found here: Places on the course are limited and are allocated on a first come, first served basis and are likely to sell out fast. Contact OPTOKON@OPTOKON.COM now to reserve your place. OPTOKON Newsletter Page 8
9 New Test Equipment Brochure OPTOKON has expanded its series of product brochures with a new brochure focusing solely on the range of OPOKON test equipment. The brochure was first introduced at ECOC 2012 and is the second in the series following the successful harsh environment brochure launched earlier in the year. The next brochure will focus on the OPTOKON Cable Management System and will be available before the end of the year. Optical Dispersion Measurement Michal Pavlu from the OPTOKON Calibration Department explains the principles behind optical dispersion measurement, a key service provided by the calibration department. Today's fiber networks must meet exacting performance requirements to fulfill the demand of widespread broadband access technology deployment. In addition to deploying fiber infrastructure that performs perfectly, network operators must reduce operating expenses while adding new revenue-generating services, all within an ever increasingly complex environment. The ability to measure CD, PMD and AP is essential during characterization of fibers, which is a series of tests performed to identify fiber viability for very high-speed transmission systems. These tests include 10 Gigabit Ethernet (GigE) and 40G in both the installation and maintenance phases. If not properly managed CD, PMD and AP severely degrade transmission quality that must operate optimally to deliver reliable broadband services. The combination of CD, PMD and AP test functions lets technicians validate the compatibility of the fiber link with high-speed coarse wavelength division multiplexing (CWDM)/ dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) system implementation including reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexer (ROADM) networks. The performance of each function makes the ODM module the right tool for characterizing fiber at transmission speeds of 40Gb/s and higher. Specifications: Chromatic dispersion ź two ended test using one fiber based on phase shift method ź full wavelength range characterization ź suitable for any fiber type Polarization mode dispersion ź based on the fixed analyzer method using fast Fourier transform (FFT) ź high dynamic range up to 65dB Attenuation profile ź db loss/km over the full wavelength range: nm ź allows CWDM and DWDM transmission band characterization water peak (1383nm area) characterization OPTOKON Newsletter Page 9
