2 Exhibition in Gallery 4 LOOKING IN WONDERLAND: SIR JOHN TENNIEL S ILLUSTRATIONS TO THE ALICE BOOKS FREE 22 June 8 September 2013 Looking in Wonderland displays a selection of the best illustrations by Sir John Tenniel for Alice s Adventures in Wonderland (1865) and Through the Looking- Glass and what Alice found there (1872) by Lewis Carroll. The exhibition introduces an amazing set of characters encountered by Alice the White Rabbit, the Mad Hatter, the March Hare, Tweedledum and Tweedledee, the King and Queen of Hearts, the Cheshire Cat, the Red Queen and the White Queen and the strange situations she finds herself in. The works in the exhibition are printed directly from the original wood blocks and are perfect examples of the skill of both illustrator and engraver. 3 Events Mad Hatter s Ball 5 Saturday 20 July 8.00pm 11.00pm Join us on a journey into wonderland a trip for curious people, in the fantastical world of the museum out of hours. With the guidance of artist Adie Blundell, and a range of unusual materials, make a hat or mask to step into the Alice stories. Become the Red Queen, the Cheshire Cat, the Dodo or one of the hordes of other fascinating characters and immerse yourself in a remarkable world. There is no dress code but all our guests are invited to fulfil their sartorial desires and dress as wildly and wonderfully as they like. A bar will be open and we ll swap the caucus race for dancing. Herbert Illuminations FREE The Making of the Original Alice Illustrations: John Tenniel and the Pictorial Vision of Wonderland Tuesday 16 July 12.30pm 2.00pm Dr Leo John De Frietas, the curator of the exhibition, will give an illustrated talk on the processes and influences in the making of the illustrations to Alice s Adventures in Wonderland (1865) and Through the Looking-Glass and what Alice found there (1871). 4 Family Events Eating in Wonderland FREE Saturday 22 June & Friday 30 August Sitting 1: 11.30am 1.00pm Sitting 2: 1.30pm 3.00pm To celebrate our Looking in Wonderland exhibition, bring a picnic and head down to the Herbert to join a Mad Hatters Tea Party. There will be an Alice inspired art activity to do as you eat your picnic, helped along by costumed characters. Each participant will be given a trail linked to the exhibition to take part in afterwards. Fancy dress is welcomed! Booking is required, please call Please arrive promptly. Exploring this interactive installation will delight children of all ages, taking them on a creative journey to the magical world of the Alice in Wonderland stories and illustrations. The richly designed space offers all sorts of playful possibilities with sensory materials to stretch the imagination of children and adults adventurous enough to join them. This summer our popular family activities will stretch your creativity and provide fun for all ages. From Mad Hatter hats, to Queens crowns and tea party bunting there will be plenty to do!
