2 Introduction Scooting is great way to encourage schoo chidren to use sustainabe trave. It can aso reduce the amount of traffic during drop off and coection times and can be promoted as a heathy aternative to driving to schoo. For chidren to be abe to scoot safey on the pavements they shoud be made aware of some of the key safety aspects associated with scooting. The Scooter Skis training wi take approximatey one hour to deiver. Each of the question and answer focus sessions shoud take 10 minutes, eaving 30 minutes for the games. It is recommended that this training is deivered in sma groups to enabe individua needs and eves of experience to be met. It is advisabe that chidren wear a hemet and suitabe cothing to participate in the games. 3 Question and Answer Focus Sessions Eiciting answers through questioning wi enabe the trainer and the trainee the opportunity to demonstrate and gain knowedge and understanding of safe scooting. These question and answer focus sessions are intended to be informa. It is recommended that during these sessions schoo poicy and procedure for scooting to schoo be either introduced or reiterated. Focus 1. Scooter Safety Questions Answers to incude: What are the benefits of scooting to schoo? It s fun To get fit To reduce the number of cars coming to schoo. What do you need to think about before scooting to schoo? Make sure your scooter is ceary marked with your name Check that your scooter is safe to ride (Ask an adut to check out strange noises and wobby whees) It is not a good idea to scoot to schoo in extreme weather such as ice or snow Think about what you are doing that day and your journey. It might be better not to scoot if you Stay for a ate after schoo activity Wi be traveing home in the dark Have a musica instrument or a arge sports bag to carry Think about your cothes Wear something bright so a pavement and road users can see you Make sure your aces are tied up Long scarves might get tanged up in whees Having your hood up can affect your abiity to see and hear traffic page 2
4 Focus 2. ROAD SAFETY AWARENESS Take a sma group of chidren to a safe area within the schoo grounds where the road and pavements can be seen. If this is not possibe then photographs of the oca area can be used to give a visua prompt to support the chidren s earning. Questions Answers to incude: Where shoud you ride your scooter on your way to schoo? You must aways use the pavement Scoot away from the edge of the kerb What do you need to be aware of when scooting on the pavement? Accidentay going into the road Cars coming out of or going into driveways Obstructions on the pavement (hedges, amp-posts, signs and other street furniture) Vehices parked on or mounting the pavement Pedestrians and other pavement users Bind corners for exampe buidings, hedges and fences How shoud you cross the road with your scooter? Aways use a forma crossing point (zebra, subway, footbridge, peican, toucan, puffin or pegasus crossing or with the Schoo Crossing Patro) If a forma crossing point is not avaiabe, choose a pace where you can see ceary in a directions Aways get off and push the scooter across the road. Aways use the Green Cross Code 1. Find a safe pace to cross 2. Stop just before you get to the kerb 3. Look a around for traffic and isten 4. If traffic is coming et it pass 5. When it is safe, wak straight across the road do not run and keep ooking and istening whie you cross What are the key points to remember when crossing the road? Stop - just before the edge of the kerb Look - traffic can come from different directions Listen - traffic can be heard before you can see it Aways wak and push your scooter across the road page 3
5 Focus 3. DRIVER AND PEDESTRIAN AWARENESS A parked car on the payground or a visit a safey controed car park wi hep young peope to reate their size and visibiity to a vehice. This exercise coud aso be used to extend the earning experience by enabing the chidren to see indicators, stop and reversing ights working. Questions Answers to incude: When scooting aong a pavement why might a driver not be abe to see you? Your size compared to the size of a car A driver might be ooking in their mirrors or not be concentrating propery Obstructions e.g. hedges, amp-posts Weather conditions (bright sunshine, heavy rain, mist or fog) Wearing dark cothes Key points to remember If you can not see the drivers eyes the driver can not see you Be aware of what is happening around you What coud affect your abiity to be aware of traffic around you? Listening to music Having a hood up restricts visibiity and hearing Paying around with friends Using a mobie phone When you are riding your scooter to and from schoo, who ese might be on the pavement? Pedestrians Peope pushing buggies Peope waking dogs What shoud you do if you are scooting aong a pavement and there are other peope waking in front of you? What shoud you not do? Sow down before you reach the other pavement users Give them some space Ask poitey if you can pass Ony pass if it is safe to do so Say thank you when you pass Push past pedestrians shouting excuse me Scoot right up behind pedestrians, forcing them to et you through Scoot in the road to get round obstructions or other pavement users What shoud you do when you get to schoo? As you get cose to the schoo sow down, there wi be more pavement traffic around Aways come into schoo using the footpath (if there is one); never cut across the car park Do not ride your scooter in the schoo grounds Park your scooter neaty in the scooter sheter or aocated scooter parking area page 4
6 Games Game 1 Aim: To raise awareness of stopping safey. Line a scooter riders up aong the edge of the payground facing towards the trainer. When the whiste is bown for the first time the chidren begin to scoot to the other side of the payground. When the whiste is bown for a second time the riders must stop as quicky and as safey as possibe. Game 2 Aim: To encourage scooting at a safe speed and safe stopping distances. A scooters to set off in foow the eader stye around the edge of the payground, maintaining the same distance between each scooter. When the whiste is bown for the first time the riders must stop, maintaining the same distance from the scooter in front of them. On the second whiste the riders again scoot around the payground. The pace of this game can be increased and the direction changed once the trainer is confident the riders have the necessary skis to stop within the safe distance in front of them. Once a riders have gained reasonabe contro, these two games can be extended by riding randomy around the payground in different directions and starting and stopping again on a whiste command. Game 3 Aim: To encourage awareness of other scooters. Divide the group into two teams and ine up in pairs (one rider from each team). Pace two cones a reasonabe distance apart. Start the game by sending the first pair off together towards the first cone and ask them to stop. Once in pace bow the whiste, and they wi scoot from cone 1 towards cone 2. On reaching cone 2 the riders pee off, 1 to the right and the other eft. Riders then arc around back to cone 1, hopefuy meeting back at the same time. Each scooter pair shoud to set off at 3-second intervas from the first pair to make the game fun and exciting. Game 4 Aim: To encourage carefu cornering and scooter contro when waking. Set up ines of 6-8 cones. On the first whiste scooter rider weaves in and out of the cones carefuy. On reaching the end, they wak back as if crossing the road to rejoin back of queue.
