1 Dear County Resident, During the past few years our County and our communities have experienced a mutitude of natura disasters. After each disaster we ask, Am I as prepared as I shoud be in the event of an emergency? Many citizens have caed aw enforcement, fire, and pubic heath agencies to ask what steps they shoud take to prepare for a disaster. Recent disasters, incuding the Hurricane Katrina tragedy, show that peope need to be prepared to survive for up to 72 hours before outside assistance may arrive. Our emergency responders prepared this pubication tited Your Famiy Disaster Pan: Three Steps to Creating a Famiy Disaster Pan. Pease review this guide and ensure that you and your famiy are as prepared as you can be. The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT program is one way you can get invoved in your community s preparedness efforts. 2 Three Steps to Creating a Famiy Disaster Pan The three steps to creating a successfu Famiy Disaster Pan are to Pan, Prepare, and Practice. Invoving the entire famiy wi et everyone know what to do in an emergency. Contact your oca fire department, emergency management office or oca American Red Cross Chapter to gather information you need to create your pan. Ask about the specific hazards and risks that threaten your community (e.g., fires, foods, and earthquakes). Find out how oca authorities wi warn you of a pending disaster and how information wi be provided before, during and after a disaster. Deveop a famiy communications pan. Incude contact information for a famiy members. Incude home, work, and schoo contact numbers, an out-of-town reative famiy members can ca, a meeting ocation near home and an out-of-area meeting ocation. List Famiy Communication Pan Out-of-State Neighborhood Meeting Pace: Meeting Pace Dia for Emergencies! oca emergency numbers incuding the famiy doctor. Discuss what your famiy needs to do to evacuate due to a fire or other emergency. Be ready to move fast. Teach everyone the best escape routes out of the home and where safe paces in the home are in case of an earthquake and where to meet outside. If you must evacuate, isten to your oca Emergency Aert Station (EAS) radio station for emergency information, such as a sheter ocation. See: EAS ocated on inside back page. Pan to Sheter-in-Pace. Sheter-in-pace is used when it is safer to stay put and create a barrier between yoursef and potentiay contaminated air outside. When tod to sheter-inpace, quicky bring your famiy and pets inside, ock doors, cose windows, air vents and firepace dampers. Take emergency suppies and go into the room you have chosen. Turn off air conditioning, forced air heating systems, exhaust fans and cothes dryers if possibe. Sea a windows, doors and vents. NOTE: Shetering-in-pace is a temporary measure intended to keep contaminated air outside. Pan for those with disabiities and other specia needs. Keep support items in a specia pace, so they can be found quicky. For those with home-heath caregivers, an aternative pan is essentia if the caregiver cannot make it to you. If the person has eectricay operated ife support equipment, deveop a pan that may incude aternate power sources for the equipment or reocation pans for the person. Go to for more information. Pan for your pets. Take pets with you if you evacuate. Be aware that pets other than service animas are not permitted in emergency pubic sheters for heath reasons. In advance prepare a ist of famiy, friends, boarding faciities, veterinarians, and petfriendy hotes that coud sheter your pets in an emergency.

Don t eave garden sprinkers on, they can waste critica water pressure. If instructed to do so, shut off water, gas, and eectricity before eaving. Post a note teing others when you eft and where you are going. Listen to your battery-powered radio and foow the instructions of oca emergency officias. Wear protective cothing and sturdy shoes. Take your famiy disaster suppy kit. Buy a Weather Aert capabe radio and isten to it whenever severe weather is forecast. Be sure to have extra batteries for the radio. Emergency Aert System (EAS) The EAS is an emergency warning system that provides the pubic with immediate information through radio, teevision, and cabe TV if ife and property are in danger from a man made or natura occurrence. 4 Step 2 to Creating a Famiy Disaster Pan PREPARE THE FAMILY When ordered to evacuate, there may be itte or no time to shop or search for the suppies you and your famiy wi need. Assembe a disaster suppy kit and keep it up to date. A kit wi hep you respond to a disaster. A disaster suppy kit has basic items a famiy needs to stay safe and be more comfortabe during and after a disaster. Disaster suppy items shoud be stored in a portabe container as cose as possibe to an exit door. Consider using a sma-wheeed trash can or arge backpack. Review your kit contents at east once a year or as famiy needs change. Have emergency suppies in your vehice and at work. Vehice kit can incude: q Fashight, extra batteries and bubs, and maps. q First aid kit and manua. q White distress fag. q Tire repair kit, jumper cabes, air pump, and fares/refectors. q Botted water and nonperishabe food items. q Seasona Suppies: Winter banket, hat, goves, shove, sand, tire chains, windshied scraper, fuorescent distress fag; summer sunscreen otion, shade items (umbrea, wide brimmed hat, etc.). Consider using a sma wheeed piece of uggage or a backpack for the kit. Home Kit Contents: q Food for three days and manua can opener. q Water (one gaon per person per day) for three days. q Battery operated radio/ teevision and extra batteries. q Fashight with extra batteries. q First aid kit and first aid manua. q Sanitation and hygiene items (hand sanitizer, moist toweettes, pastic garbage bags and ties, and toiet paper). q Matches in waterproof container. q Whiste. q Extra cothing and bankets. q Kitchen accessories and cooking utensis. q Photocopies of identification and important documents. q Cash and coins. q Specia needs items such as prescription medications, eye gasses, contact ens soution, and hearing aid batteries q List of phone numbers: medica providers, schoos, etc. q Loca map (e.g. Thomas Guide, AAA, etc.). q Items for infants such as formua, diapers, bottes, and pacifiers. q Toos, pet suppies, a oca area map, and other items unique to the needs of the famiy. q Fiter mask for each member of the famiy. q Beach to sanitize water. If you ive in a cod cimate, it is possibe that you wi not have heat during or after a disaster. Consider cothing and bedding needs. Be sure to incude one set of the foowing for each person: q Jacket or coat q Long pants and ong seeve shirt q q q Sturdy shoes Hat, goves, and scarf Seeping bag or warm banket Locate and keep cear the utiity shut-off points for your home gas, eectricity, and water ines. If a specia too is needed, keep the too near the vave or switch. Prepare an inventory of home items. This can be suppemented with photographs. Keep the inventory in a safe pace away from the home such as a safe deposit box. Post emergency phone numbers by the phone. Incude the radio frequency of your oca EAS radio station (see inside back cover) and the other aerts/aarms the oca community uses to notify the residents of an incident. Keep fire extinguishers and smoke detectors current and in working order. Compete and carry the waet emergency information cards ocated at the bottom of this brochure. Update the cards as changes occur. Locate home/work evacuation routes and become famiiar with potentia obstaces. Know aternative routes in case the primary evacuation route is bocked. 5 PREPARE THE FAMILY continued Be Weather Wise. Listen for Watches, Warnings, and other weather reated information from the Nationa Weather Service. Fash foods happen often in our County as do winter storms and high winds. Visit for more weather information. Become Invoved. Take a Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training cass and a first aid/cpr cass. Meet with neighbors and make pans to assist each other in the event of a disaster. Stay Informed. Know what is happening in your community to reduce the risks and hazards identified for your community. Prepare to survive for at east 72 hours and possiby up to seven days without outside assistance. Besides the emergency suppies, use the food in your home, starting with refrigerated items, then frozen items, and ast the non-perishabe foods. Keep the gas tank of your car at east haf fu at a times. Step 3 to Creating a Famiy Disaster Pan PRACTICE YOUR PLAN It is important to discuss and practice your Famiy Disaster Pan at east twice a year. A good time to practice the pan is the weekend that dayight savings starts and ends. Practice evacuating from your home and meeting outside. Wak and drive evacuation routes. Ca your out-of-state contact. Tak about the practice dri with your famiy. If a part of the pan did not work, change the pan to make it work or to improve the pan. Update parts of the pan that have changed such as teephone numbers, schoo and work ocations, emergency contact information, insurance information, and copies of important documents, etc. Check your Disaster Suppy Kit and repace items that are date expired or damaged. Make sure radios and fashights work. Inspect containers and repace them if cracks or other damage is present. Check batteries and/or working condition of smoke detectors and carbon monoxide monitors. Repace cothing, prescription items, gasses, contacts, etc. if they are out-of-date or no onger fit.

6 DISEASE PREVENTION Your first ine of defense on fighting iness is to wash your hands frequenty. Wet your hands and appy soap. Rub your hands together and scrub seconds, rinse we, and dry. Use an antibacteria toweette or a hand sanitizer if you can not wash your hands with soap and water. WATER SAFETY If a boi water order is issued, residents shoud not use the water for drinking, washing dishes and utensis, hand washing or cooking. Safe water for drinking, cooking, and persona hygiene incudes botted, boied, or treated water. Boi water for one minute and et coo before using. Water purification may be used as an aternate method where gas and eectricity is not avaiabe. Purify water by adding eight drops (¼ teaspoon) of house hod beach, such as Corox or Purex, per gaon of cear water and 16 drops (½ teaspoon) per gaon of coudy water. Mix we and et stand for 30 minutes before using. How to Keep Your Famiy Heathy During a Disaster FOOD SAFETY Food may not be safe to eat during and after an emergency due to power outages. A power outage of two hours or ess is not hazardous to food that is stored in a propery functioning refrigerator or freezer. Shoud a ong-term power outage occur, take these actions to keep food safe: Group packages of food together and keep refrigerator and freezer doors cosed as much as possibe. Add bock or dry ice to your refrigerator if it is expected to be off onger than 4 hours. Discard foods that have an unusua odor, coor, or texture. Discard canned foods that are buging, opened, or damaged. If canned food has come in contact with foodwater or storm water, remove the abes, wash the cans, and dip them in a soution of 1 cup of beach in 5 gaons of water. Re-abe the cans. PREVENTING CARBON MONOXIDE POISONING Carbon monoxide (CO) is an odoress, cooress gas that can cause sudden iness and death if you breathe it. When power outages occur you may use aternative sources of fue or eectricity for heating, cooing, or cooking. Do not use these sources in your home, garage, or camper because CO can buid up and poison the peope and animas inside. Use caution when operating these sources to prevent fire. PROTECTING YOURSELF FROM CHEMICALS During emergencies such as earthquakes, hurricanes, and foods, chemicas that can harm peope s heath may be reeased from businesses, homes, and other sources into the environment. Remove and isoate contaminated cothing and shoes. In case of skin or eye contact with substance, immediatey fush skin or eyes with running water for a east 20 minutes.
