Adult Continuing Education (ACE) noncredit courses and certificate programs reflect SAIC s educational philosophy, adapted for the adult learner. Explore new subjects, learn new skills, or refresh existing ones in our state-of-the-art facilities and studios. Experiment with new modes of creative production, including laser cutting and 3D printing, or find inspiration with access to our museum, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Fashion Resource Center, Joan Flasch Artists Book Collection, Roger Brown Study Collection, and Video Data Bank. Pursue your creative vision under the guidance of our faculty, comprised of practicing artists, designers, and scholars. Learn with and from your peers as you develop and strengthen your creative and critical abilities, and produce work based on your personal research and interests. Registration is accepted by fax, in person, by mail, and phone on a first come, first served basis. A completed registration form and payment in full is required at the time of registration. Tuition is $585 for one-week, fiveweek, 10-week, and online courses. Discounts are available to Art Institute of Chicago members ($527) and SAIC alumni ($439). Unless otherwise indicated, students are responsible for purchasing their own supplies. A list of required items will be provided at the first class session along with a course syllabus. Students interested in withdrawing from a class can visit saic.edu/ace for our refund policy. All requests to withdraw must be submitted in writing to cs@saic.edu and include the student s name, ID number, and course information. Introduction to Natural Dyes Scarf Workshop Choose one of four workshop times: January 14, 2017, 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. January 14, 2017, 1:00 p.m. 4:00 p.m. January 21, 2017, 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. January 21, 2017, 1:00 p.m. 4:00 p.m. In this one day, hands-on workshop, instructor Kate Hampel will guide you through the creation of your own wearable textile design. Explore the range and depth of colors found in local dye plants, experiment with techniques such as Japanese shibori and stitched resists, and learn the histories of various types of natural dyes. While all necessary supplies will be provided to create a unique scarf, participants are also encouraged to bring an item from home to dye bleached or undyed natural fibers or blends a white cotton t-shirt, linen or cotton napkins, or undyed wool yarn will work well. 5 CERTIFICATE PROGRAMS Adult Continuing Education noncredit certificates at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago offer unique learning opportunities for adult students interested in pursuing an education in contemporary art and design. Programs have been designed to meet the needs of today s working adults interested in developing an art and design practice, exploring new areas of study, or preparing for a variety of educational pursuits. Requirements vary by program. Most can be completed in one year at a rate of two courses per semester. Taking more than two courses per semester is not recommended. Courses are conveniently offered evenings and weekends during our ten-week fall and spring semesters, and one-week, fiveweek, and ten-week summer sessions. Classes are held in SAIC s studios and labs where students have access to a wide variety of facilities and resources. All 30 contact hour Adult Continuing Education courses are eligible electives for all certificate programs. Completion of all certificates requires a final portfolio review by a Continuing Studies instructor. NEW Certificate in Studio Art and Design Designed to support individual students immediate creative goals and long-term aspirations, the new Certificate in Studio Art and Design reflects SAIC s interdisciplinary art and design curriculum. Requirements include: Studio: Surface, Space, Time required Four electives Critique and Exhibition required The sequence of electives can take many forms to suit the individual needs of the adult learner, emphasizing personal enrichment, preparation for further study, and more. Drawing Certificate Students develop the skills and conceptual foundation necessary to cultivate their art practice, drawing inspiration and context from SAIC s many resources, including the Art Institute of Chicago, an encyclopedic museum that encompasses more than 5,000 years of creative expression from cultures around the world. Introduction to Drawing Introduction to Figure Drawing Drawing Studio: Multi-level The Artist and the Sketchbook Art History Course (1) Art and Movies Art the AIC: American Art Art the AIC: Ancient to Pre-Modern Art the AIC: Impressionism and Post- Impressionism Art the AIC: Modernism and Beyond Fashion Certificate The Fashion Certificate is designed for students interested in artistic and professional training in fashion. Classes are held in the Sage Studios for Fashion Design, where participants hone the technical skills necessary to realize their creative vision as they develop a portfolio of work that can be used for a variety of purposes, including preparation for further study. Inspiration and context are drawn from SAIC s Fashion Resource Center, a unique collection of late 20th- and 21st-century designer garments and accessories representing extreme innovation, as well as the Art Institute of Chicago museum and other SAIC collections and resources. Sewing Techniques: Fundamentals Studio Courses (6) Fashion Medium: Embroidery, Embellishments, and Sewn Elements Figure Drawing for Illustration Sewing Techniques: Above the Waist Patternmaking and Construction: Above the Waist Sewing Techniques: Below the Belt Patternmaking and Construction: Below the Belt Graphic Design Certificate The Graphic Design Certificate is designed for students with an interest in exploring graphic design with an emphasis on print media. Participants employ analog and digital processes as they develop a portfolio of work that represents their personal voice and demonstrates the technical, critical, and analytical skills required of the field. Note: Students enrolled in the Graphic Design Certificate should have access to a Mac or PC computer with Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, and Photoshop installed. Before starting this program, students should feel comfortable navigating the directory structure and creating, deleting, renaming, and moving files and directories without assistance. 6 Interior Design Certificate Painting Certificate In the Interior Design Certificate, students develop the necessary skills to design interior spaces while studying current design concepts and trends. This program is ideal for those interested in developing a portfolio to accompany college admissions applications, and individuals wishing to undertake personal projects. In the Painting Certificate, students develop the skills and conceptual foundation necessary to cultivate their art practice, drawing inspiration and context from SAIC s many resources, including the Art Institute of Chicago, an encyclopedic museum that encompasses more than 5,000 years of creative expression from cultures around the world. Note: Students enrolled in the Interior Design Certificate should have access to a Mac or PC computer.
