2 Page 2 ART SCHOOL REGISTRATION POLICIES Enrollment limits- Registration is based on first-come, first-served basis; classes have an enrollment limit of 20 to 24 students (adult classes) and 13 students (YAP classes). Late registrations- Registration is ongoing until the enrollment limit is reached; a $20 late registration fee will be charged after the first scheduled class. Transfers- Requests to transfer to another course or section are subject to a $20 processing fee and must be made prior to the second class date. Student absences- Please check your calendar for all class dates before registering. Students who are absent will not receive a refund or art school credit but should contact the instructor to discuss options. Processing fees- A $25 processing fee will be charged to cover the cost of any returned checks or declined credit or debit cards. Cancelled courses- NCMA reserves the right to cancel any class due to insufficient registration! In this case a full refund will be given to all students in the cancelled class. Cancelled registrations- Any students who choose to cancel a class registration prior to the first meeting will be subject to a $20 handling fee. No refunds will be issued after the first class for any reason! Classes will be cancelled and rescheduled by the instructor in the event of bad weather or instructor s absence. Current and new NCMA members are eligible for registration with the member rate, which represents a $15 discount per course. Masters such as Degas, Seurat, Hopper and Vermeer created strong interplay between these elements. Some classes will work with a model, other classes with still life. Students may use charcoal, pastels, oils, or the medium of their choice. Course #MHP3 Mondays 4 6:30 PM, Studio 2; $195 members, $210 nonmembers DRAWING 101 NEW! ages 13 adult; appropriate for beginners, all levels welcome Noelle Smith This multi-class taught by an enthusiastic and encouraging instructor will introduce the basics of drawing. With the right tools and guidance you will be creating representational drawings before you know it. Your draftsmanship will develop as we strengthen your capacity for observation and draw a wide range of subjects everything from still life to landscape to the figure. As the course progresses we will learn how to apply basic principles such as composition, depth and value. At the completion of 10 classes, you will have a stack of drawings that will make you proud. This class if ideal for beginners, but all levels are welcome. By way of classical drawing exercises using line and tone, composition and the construction of volume and mass, instruction centers on working from observation to create the illusion of threedimensional form and space. Students work in color medium of their choice. Use watercolor, acrylics, pastels or any other medium of your choice. Bring a camera to take photographs to be used as reference when the weather does not permit working outdoors. While European techniques and materials are encouraged,

We will use a modern, nonacademic approach to the figure and ground. Our aim is not to copy what we see but to do something with what we see. Learn how to analyze and critique your own work as well as understand, appreciate and critique others work. Critiques are shared, essential and intense. We will also discuss art, galleries, framing, etc. whatever interests the group as professional artists. Learn painting skills and techniques for value transitions and contrasts, color harmony, brush handling and composition. The subject matter is taken from life and resource materials. The emphasis is on individual development, and the perception and translation of form and color. Course #FB2 Fridays 9:30 AM 12 PM, Studio 4; $195 members, $210 non-members PASTEL PORTRAIT STUDY all levels welcome Barbara Silbert Learn the basic elements of drawing the human head in different poses from a live model. Charcoal and pastels will be used to learn shading and highlighting. Individual attention will be given at all levels. Bring charcoal sticks, charcoal pencils, kneaded eraser, 14 X 18 (or larger) charcoal or pastel pad to first class. Course #FS4 Fridays 10 AM 12:30 PM, Studio 2; $195 members, $210 non-members; model fee WATERCOLOR: STUDIO TECHNIQUES appropriate for beginners, all levels welcome Max Hergenrother This painting class introduces watercolor techniques with a focus on the specific constraints of working with aqueous media in the studio rather than on site. Become comfortable with water-based painting using a wide variety of subject matter, with still images as a primary source. Translate your favorite photographic images into the fluid language of

6 Page 6 watercolor while developing sensibility and knowledge of composition and color theory as applied to the painting process. A unique opportunity to learn watercolor techniques directly from an artist whose work has been exhibited at NCMA! Course # FMH4a Fridays 10:30 AM 1 PM, Studio 1; $195 members, $210 nonmembers Course # FMH4b Fridays 1:15 3:45 PM, Studio 1; $195 members, $210 nonmembers PASTEL PAINTING Kyle Blumenthal For students with prior experience in drawing who would like to hone their skills by focusing on color value through the use of pastel. Emphasis placed on color, mass, composition, process, in relation to the development of individual vision and expression. Students will explore various techniques and solve a range of artistic problems. Works of Edgar Degas, Mary Cassatt, and contemporary artist Sally Strand will be examined. Course #FB1 Fridays 1 3:30 PM, Studio 2; $195 members, $210 non-members CARTOONING & COMICS: ILLUSTRATION TECHNIQUES ages 10 to adult; all levels welcome! Max Hergenrother Learn foundation drawing for comics, including the basics of perspective drawing, expressive anatomy, penciling, inking, and lettering. Explore the process of creating comic strips, comic books and graphic novels. Create your own characters and tell your stories as you learn techniques used in Marvel, DC and Manga comics. Experiment with the principles of effective storytelling and have fun as you learn the mechanics of creating page layouts composed of panels, text and your drawings. Learn classical and contemporary techniques and concepts, with emphasis on understanding the formal language of painting and the fundamentals of artistic expression. Acrylic, oil, watercolor or graphite will be the primary medium and will be chosen for the particular student s goals and comfort level. Paint from still-life, landscape, or clothed figure with instruction geared towards realism; various other painting styles could be explored. Color theory, linear perspective, pictorial composition, figure/ground relationships, visual perception, spatial concepts, and critical thinking skills will all be emphasized extensively.
