Credit Hours: 4 Lecture Hours: 1 Lab Hours: 6 Prerequisite(s) Co-requisite(s) Prerequisites: All Entry Level Welding Certificate Courses and BTR 105 or permission of instructor. 3 Writing Across the Curriculum Rationale: Mohave Community College firmly supports the idea that writing can be used to improve education; students who write in their respective content areas will learn more and retain what they learn better than those who don t. Courses in the core curriculum have been identified as Writing Across the Curriculum courses. Minimum standards for the Writing Across the Curriculum component are: 1. The writing assignments should total words. For example, a single report which is 1500 words in length OR a series of essay questions and short papers (example: four 375-word assignments) which total 1500 words could meet the requirement. 2. The writing component will represent at least 10% of a student s final grade in the course. Is this course identified as a Writing Across the Curriculum course? Describes & demonstrates the applicable safety procedures and the use of personal protective equipment. 2. Performs SMAW (Shielded Metal Arc Welding), GMAW (Gas Metal Arc Welding), FCAW (Flux-cored Arc Welding), and GTAW (Gas Tungsten Arc Welding) welds to given specifications. 3. Use the appropriate thermal cutting process according to the given specifications. 4. Performs visual inspection to cut, prepared or gouged surfaces to meet given specifications. 5. Performs safety inspection of welding equipment and accessories. Course Competencies and Objectives By the end of the semester, students will be able to: Competency 1 Demonstrate proper use and inspection of personal protective equipment. Objective 1.1 Describe proper safe operation practices in a work area and proper work action in confined spaces. Objective 1.2 Demonstrate the proper use and inspection of ventilation equipment. Objective 1.3 Select and demonstrate the proper personal protective equipment including eye protection, helmet, filter lens, clothing and shoes. Competency 2 Use SMAW to complete a welding project.

4 Objective 2.3 Make fillet welds in all positions on carbon steel. Objective 2.4 Make groove welds in all positions on carbon steel. Objective 2.5 Pass the fabrication, weld symbol interpretation, and welding elements for drawing Number AWS EDU-6. Competency 3 Demonstrate GMAW-S (Short Circuiting Transfer) and GMAW( Spray Transfer). Objective 3.1 Sets up & operates GMAW equipment on carbon steel. Objective 3.2 Make fillet & groove welds in all positions on carbon steel using GMAW short circuiting arc transfer. Objective 3.3 Make fillet & groove welds in 1F & 2F & 1G positions on carbon steel using GMAW spray transfer. Objective 3.5 Pass the fabrication, welding symbol interpretation, and welding elements for drawing Numbers AWS EDU-2 and AWS EDU-3. Competency 4 Demonstrate Flux Cored Arc Welding (FCAW-G & FCAW-S) Objective 4.1 Sets up & operates FCAW-G & FCAW-S equipment on carbon steel. Objective 4.2 Makes fillet welds in all positions on carbon steel. Objective 4.3 Makes groove welds in all positions on carbon steel. Objective 4.4 Passes the fabrication, welding symbol interpretation, and welding elements for drawing Number AWS EDU-1 Competency 5 Demonstrates Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW) Objective 5.1 Operates GTAW equipment on carbon steel.
