3 INTRODUCTION This tutorial examines the process of creating a door frame family and focuses on the Revit 2010 sweeps function, locking components via dimensioning, working in different views and adding parameters to objects. This tutorial was created using Autodesk Revit Architecture You can begin a new family at anytime using the method shown in Figure 1. Alternatively when you first start Revit you can begin a new family from the new option under the Families options. We begin by opening a new Revit family. Open Revit, select the application menu, then select new and finally family. In the selection box choose Metric door In Revit 2010, the application menu button shown to the left replaces the file button in previous versions but acts in the same way i.e. to allow access to other options. Figure 1 Opening a new family At this stage you are selecting a template file to begin your new family. Any template relevant to your needs may be selected. As we are creating a door frame the metric door template was selected. Figure 2 Selecting a template file, in this case, metric door 3

4 The family editor window is opened which will enable you to create and edit door elements in much the same environment as when you are creating your regular drawings within Revit. You are able to work in plan, elevation and 3D views to create your components. Sections can also be created when needed. Figure 3 The family editor window with metric door template loaded. You may now begin setting parameters. Parameters that are able to be modified within the project, such as width, length, etc are first inserted as dimension lines, although since we are using a template there are already some dimensions in place such as the width parameter. In Figure 4, the dimension allows for a change in door width. Notice that the width dimension is attached to the reference planes named right and left. To adjust the 1000 width dimension you must adjust the reference plane it is attached to. Figure 4 Width dimension line which is attached to the reference planes 4

5 After you insert a dimension line (or select an existing one) you then assign a label to associate it with. Select a dimension and left click the drop down menu next to label to see the predefined labels available along with the option to add your own parameter. Parameters are given labels to allow them to be changed within a Revit project from the properties box. You may select any preset name or create your own label. Be sure to select labels relevant to the dimension or Revit may disallow the label if it does not meet the predefined constraints. Also note that Revit will not allow two different dimensions set to the same parameter i.e. you cannot have two width parameters with differing values, say one 1000mm and another 600mm. In this instance you should create your own label to assign to any secondary width dimensions. Figure 5 Dimension label assigned to Width. The architrave is made editable in a Revit project in the same way, i.e. a dimension that is given a label. Dimensions are able to be added in both plan and elevation views to create and constrain all the parameters you require. Figure 6 Assigning architrave dimension label. 5

6 Select the Exterior elevation view and left click on the door frame. Now select edit extrusion. You will notice dimensions have been created and labeled as frame width. It is important that you always draw in the elevation you wish the object to relate to. That is, if you want the door to relate to the internal face of the wall, draw in the internal elevation and vice versa. The edit extrusion button is located on the Form tab of the ribbon. Since you are adding constraints to a dimension, in this case a frame width of 75, if you wish to alter a dimension you will be prompted to remove the constraint. Once you select Remove Constraints the label frame width will be removed since you cannot have differing dimensions on the same label as mentioned earlier. Remember, to alter a dimension you must change the actual dimension (as shown in Fig. 8) not the label dimension, once the object is selected. 7 You can sketch paths by drawing or picking lines in exactly the same way you would sketch a slab or roof outline in a Revit project. With all this in mind it is now time to create the door frame which will be done in the form of a solid sweep. Select the interior elevation (or any elevation you wish to relate to). On the Create tab, left click on Solid and navigate down to Sweep. You will now draw the path you wish the frame to follow. You can sketch a new path or select a path that already exists. Ensure you select a relevant work plane, in this case Interior if Revit has not preselected it for you. Figure 9 Navigating to solid sweep and sketch 2d path. 8 Figure 11 Path drawn for the frame. Many manufacturers now offer Revit profiles for their items as a download or as part of a CD-ROM catalogue for use within projects. It is worthwhile checking with any commonly used manufacturer to see if they have profiles available. Once you have drawn your path select finish path. Switch to the Plan view and then choose select profile. Here you can load a premade profile or sketch your own. We will select edit Profile to enable us to sketch our own. From here you will have access to the standard Revit tools such as lines, arcs, trim, extend etc, to create your profile. Figure 12 Selecting finish path, select profile and edit profile 8

9 Now draw the profile we want to extrude along the path we have drawn. You may wish to obtain manufacturers details for exact sizing of items you wish to create. The profile created in plan will be extruded along the path we previously created in elevation. Figure 13 Finished Profile Select finish profile and then select finish sweep. 10 You will notice that the frame has now been extended around the sweep to both sides and the door head. Figure 15 Finished sweep in plan view. To edit or add to the profile, first select the profile and then click edit sweep. Select the profile again and then click edit profile as done in previous steps. This returns you to the profile editing screen to allow you to alter or add to the profile. It is always possible to return to profiles or paths to alter them or add dimensions and parameters. 11 By adding dimensions certain relationships can be locked. Adding dimensions of 40mm to the rebates will ensure they remain at 40mm as the profile is stretched to fit differing wall sizes. The difference will be taken up in the profile where it is not dimensioned and is therefore free to stretch/shrink as required. You need to consider which dimensions are editable within the Revit project and which dimensions are fixed. In this case we want the 40mm dimension to be fixed and as such have not assigned a label to it, making it not editable in the Revit project. Figure 15 Finished sweep in plan view. Figure 17 Dimensioning rebates to maintain a dimension of 40mm. Locking and unlocking dimensions is done via the padlock icon which appears when a dimension is highlighted. In order to make the frame stretch to differing wall sizes, a locked dimension of 0mm (zero) between the frame and wall will ensure that the frame will always be aligned with the wall Figure 18 Locking the wall frame and faces with a dimension of 0mm. 11

12 Adding the dimensions in the previous steps allows the frame to adapt to different wall sizing and retain set rebate sizes. The effects of controlling/ not controlling relationships is compared in Figure 19. Figure 19 Frame adaptation comparison. If you need to construct a frame to a particular sized wall you can adjust the size of the default wall using the edit structure tool in the element properties box in the same way you would adjust a normal wall within Revit. To allow the frame width to be altered from within the Revit project you can dimension the width and assign a label to it as done in earlier steps. This will allow manual control of the relationship between the frame and wall as opposed to locking it in the previous step. This time add the dimension of the frame which will be 150mm as this is the size of the default wall used in the metric door template we began with and select label and then add parameter (refer to earlier steps if needed). Give the parameter a sensible name of your choosing, in this case I will use Door Frame Width. In the selection box Group parameter under select Dimensions. Selecting dimensions in the group parameter under box will add the newly created door frame width parameter to be grouped with other dimensions in the element properties box within a Revit project. You may select any of the boxes but makes good sense to group parameters logically. Figure 20 Adding a label to the dimension. 12

To load the frame into a currently open project, finish the profile and sweep and then select load into project. Alternatively you can load it into a project at anytime using the regular load family option. This concludes the tutorial.
