SMART Board User Guide for Mac What is it? SMART Board is an interactive whiteboard available in an increasing number of classrooms at the University of Tennessee. While your laptop image is projected on the SMART Board, you can tap on the screen with your finger. The SMART Board becomes a giant touch-screen. Tapping on the screen is equivalent to a click with your mouse. You may draw on the SMART Board using the four electronic pens on the SMART Board tray. Use the board for lectures, presentations, and more. 2 BEFORE USING THE SMART BOARD Computer Requirements: (For Version 11) Intel Core 2 Duo processor or later (universal binary) 2 GB of RAM 2 GB of free hard disk space Mac OS X operating system software 10.7 or 10.8 Safari application program 5.1 or later Adobe Flash player v11 or later First, UNINSTALL any previous versions of the Smart Notebook software. SMART Board Software Download the latest free SMART Board software from this website: Version 10.8 for Mac To download the SMART Notebook software: Choose version needed Click the Download button. This will download, but not install the software. You should be near a SMART Board when you install but DO NOT plug in the USB cable until prompted to do so at the end of the installation process. To install the SMART Notebook software: 1. Double-click the installer icon, and install the software according to the instructions (most people neither want nor need the Galleries - those are mostly K-12 activities and lesson plans.) 2. For Notebook software 11.4, use NB-AEAAG-DAIJR-HYRVY-DEDAK when asked for your product key. For Notebook software 14.x, use NC-2ADAC-ANE39-SESWF-S6AAA- AAA when asked for license. 3. Do not click the box for the automatic update of the software. 4. Click Yes when asked if you want to find a functioning SMART Board product, and connect the USB cable from the SMART Board port to your laptop. 5. When the SMART Board is detected, the installation will finish, and you will be ready to use the software. If you experience trouble installing the software, contact the Help Desk at help.utk.edu or , OIT Instructional Development & Training 2

CONNECTING TO THE SYSTEM Steps for turning on the SMART Board: Connect the laptop computer to the two cables as shown. One cable connects to the USB port, and the other cable connects to the VGA port of your computer. If you have a DVI Powerbook (the video connector has a flat pin and is a wider connector), you will need the DVI to VGA adaptor cable that came with your laptop. If you have an ibook, you will need the ibook video out to Mini Port VGA adapter cable that came with your laptop. USB VGA Mini Port VGA Adapter Connection Panel 2013, OIT Instructional Development & Training 3

Connecting a Laptop to the Built-In Speaker System If you want to output audio from your laptop to the speaker system: Locate the thin, audio cable in the bottom drawer of the podium. Plug one end of the audio cable into the headphone jack on the side of the laptop; connect the other end to the "Audio" jack in the Laptop section of the connection plate directly below where you connect the laptop VGA cable. Note: Do not use the Audio jack in the AUX 1 section. Connecting a Laptop to the Internet In order for you to connect to the Internet either with a wireless card or an Ethernet card, your computer must be registered with the university. You may register online at If you are not using a wireless card, locate the Ethernet cable in the bottom drawer of the podium. Connect one end to the Ethernet port on your laptop; connect the other end to the Network port in the laptop section on the connection plate. Turn the projection system on at the small AMX control panel (tap to wake up ). 2013, OIT Instructional Development & Training 4

When the system is warmed up, press Laptop on the menu screen and turn on your computer. It may be necessary to open System Preferences on your laptop and Displays/Advanced to set the Mirror Displays. THE FIRST TIME YOU USE THE SMART BOARD Launching the SMART Board Software 1. If the SMART Board icon is not visible in the system tray (the bottom right hand corner of the taskbar), double-click the SMART software icon located on the desktop to launch the software or browse for it in the Program Files: 2. A small SMART software icon will then appear in the system tray. Note the SMART Board Tools menu at the top of the screen. 3. Click on this icon to display the SMART software menu. 4. The SMART Floating Toolbar will also be visible on the desktop. 2013, OIT Instructional Development & Training 5

Detecting the SMART Board: When you connect to the SMART Board, if you see the SMART Software icon located in the system tray, the SMART Board is ready to use. Be sure the power button is ON to the SMART Board itself (bottom right-hand corner). If there is a detection problem, open the Control Panel; you will see an X on a red circle. 1. Check the connections. If you still have a problem, start the Control Panel (from SMART software menu, and select SMART Hardware Settings. )The SMART Board Settings window will appear and detect the SMART product automatically. If the SMART product does not appear, press Connection Wizard under TASKS. 2013, OIT Instructional Development & Training 6

2. If the SMART Board detection process is successful, you will see the red circle and X is changed to a green circle and check mark in the Control Panel window. Click OK, and close the SMART Board Control Panel window to continue using your computer with SMART Board applications. 3. If it does not work, check your connections, and restart your laptop. Then, try the detection process from the beginning. 2013, OIT Instructional Development & Training 7

Orienting the SMART Board The first time you use your laptop with the SMART Board, you may need to orient the screen. Click on Orient from the menu. The standard orientation pattern will appear on the SMART Board screen. Use your finger to tap the center of the 9 points as shown below. Note: This process can be further customized through the SMART Control Panel/ SMART Hardware Settings/ Pen and Button Settings/(drop-down arrow)/ Orientation/Alignment Settings. TEACHING WITH THE SMART BOARD Displaying Images on the SMART Board Anything you can display on your computer monitor will be projected onto the SMART Board when you are connected to the system. For example, you could display: Word Documents Images Pages on the Internet PowerPoint Presentations Statistical or Design Programs 2013, OIT Instructional Development & Training 8

Touching the SMART Board is equivalent to clicking on your computer screen using your mouse. Tap once on the board for a single mouse click; tap twice on the board for a double click. Drawing on the Board Use the colored electronic pens in the SMART Board tray to draw on the board. Do NOT write on the SMART Board with dry-erase markers or pens. The Ink layer appears when a pen is selected, and you will see a small toolbar containing a screen capture tool and an undo tool. Note that the SMART pens are interchangeable. They will write in the color of the lighted empty pen tray. Try to keep the pens in the correct trays. Also note that if you remove a pen from the tray, your finger will act as a pen and you cannot tap on the screen as if it is a mouse. Return the pen to its tray (or select mouse arrow from the Floating Toolbar) to be able to tap on the screen again. Use the round, black eraser to erase your marks. Press firmly when using the eraser. Customizing Floating Tools To customize your toolbar, Click and drag on a tool to add or remove that tool from the Floating Toolbar. Click on the Gear icon on the bottom of the Floating Tools to open the selection of tools to customize. 2013, OIT Instructional Development & Training 9

Click and hold on a tool to open a selection of changes. In addition, changes can be made in the Control Panel/Hardware Settings screen. Select one of the four pen buttons, the eraser button, or mouse/keyboard buttons to customize. With the pens, you can change the color, transparency, thickness, and line style. With the eraser, you can change the eraser thickness, and with mouse/keyboard buttons, you can assign other actions to SMART Board mouse/keyboard buttons. Your customized settings will be kept on your computer until you hit the Defaults button. Using the Floating Tools The Floating Tools allows you access to a variety of one-touch controls. To launch the Floating Tools, select Show Floating Tools from SMART Board Tools menu. This will launch the default Floating Tools. To use Floating Tools, your computer needs to be connected to the SMART Sympodium. If you wish to move the Floating Tools around, grab by the handle located on the side of the Floating Tools, and drag to a desired position. 2013, OIT Instructional Development & Training 10

Default options on the Floating Tools are: Capture an Area - when you click this tool the mouse will change; then drag your stylus diagonally across the area of the screen you want to capture to the SMART Notebook. Use Mouse Cursor this is the default tool Pen tool use stylus to create annotations on screen Highlighter use your stylus to highlight in yellow Restore Cleared Page (Undo) Eraser erase with the stylus Right-click of the mouse your next touch on the screen will be a rightclick More use to reach options like customizing or closing the Floating Tools Using the SMART Notebook There are three ways to get information into the Notebook. You can use the Screen Capture Tools while working with other programs such as Word or PowerPoint. The captured information will be transferred to the SMART Notebook. You can import image and Flash files to the SMART Notebook by using the SMART Notebook s Insert menu. You can create annotations while working with the SMART Notebook. Using the Screen Capture Tools You can take partial or whole screen captures by using Screen Capture Tools. From SMART Board Tools menu, select Capture Full Screen under Screen Capture to capture entire screen. Captured image will be located in SMART Notebook as another page. From SMART Board Tools menu, select Capture Selected Area under Screen Capture, and then press and drag to select the area you want to capture. The image will be located in SMART Notebook as another page. 2013, OIT Instructional Development & Training 11

Creating Annotations in the SMART Notebook If it is not started, start the SMART Notebook from SMART Board Tools menu. Draw or write in the Notebook. Select the mouse arrow again. On a MAC, to convert the handwriting to text, you may have to turn handwriting recognition on in Ink (System Preferences) for this feature to function properly. Click on the handwriting to select it. A border appears around the object with an arrow in the top right corner. Click on the arrow button, and select Handwriting Recognition in the drop-down list. Note the message provided. Check Yes and open Ink Preferences. Turn on the Handwriting Recognition (and note additional options). NOTE: Handwriting recognition is available on Macs with OS X v10.3 or later. When done with the handwriting recognition, turn it off again, because it will interfere with the mouse functions. 2013, OIT Instructional Development & Training 12

Using Restore/Clear Annotations: Restore/Clear Annotations button allows you to clear or restore the annotations on the screen immediately after making the annotations. If there are annotations on the screen, you can hit this button and all the annotations will be cleared. (Annotations can also be cleared by touching elsewhere on the screen in mouse mode.) If you intentionally or unintentionally clear the annotations, you can restore them by hitting this button. Right Click: On the Mac, the right click is equal to CTRL + Click. Typing Text: You may also use the SMART Keyboard to write on a SMART Notebook page. Select the keyboard by pushing the SMART Sympodium button with a picture of a keyboard next to it (or choose Open Keyboard from the SMART Board Tools menu). The image of a keyboard will appear on the screen. First, tap at the desired location on the SMART Notebook page. Then, enter your information in the SMART Keyboard. The information will be displayed as typed characters at the desired location on the SMART Notebook page. Saving or Exporting Notebook Files You can save or export SMART Notebook files in several formats: Notebook files, Image files, HTML files, or PDF files. 2013, OIT Instructional Development & Training 13

To save the annotations as SMART Notebook file, from File menu select Save. To export as an image file or HTML file, or PDF file, from File menu select desired format, and enter a file name. Recorder The Recorder allows you to simultaneously record your voice and video of the screen as you draw and change the display on the screen, effectively creating a narrated video. The output file will be QuickTime (.mov) file. To record, you will need a microphone (either built-in or connected to your laptop). Make sure the volume is not muted. To open the Recorder: From the SMART Board Tools menu, select Open Recorder. The Recorder controls will appear: Press the Record button to start recording, press Stop when you are finished. Your voice will be saved along with everything that is displayed or written on the board while you record. By default, the file saved will be in movie format (.mov) and can be viewed using Windows Media Player, Real Player, Quicktime, or similar software. NOTE: Files tend to be about 10MB per minute, so if you record an entire lecture, your file will be very, very large. You will need special storage space on a server for files this size if you want to put them on the web. USING OTHER EQUIPMENT Using the VCR with the Projector The VCR is located on a shelf at the bottom of the podium. 1. Put a tape in the VCR and the power will come on automatically. 2. Choose VHS under Input Select on the control panel. 3. Control the VCR by using the buttons under VHS Controls on the control panel. 4. Press the eject button on the front of the VCR to manually eject the tape. 2013, OIT Instructional Development & Training 14

To return to other projection modes such as projecting from your laptop or document camera, press the appropriate button on the control panel. Using the Document Camera with the Projector 1. Set up the document camera on the shelf on the right side of the podium. The shelf can be raised and locked into position. 2. Locate the VGA cable that came with the document camera. 3. Connect one end of the cable to the VGA port (use SXGA/XGA/SVGA port, not Extern In port) on the back of the document camera, and connect the other end to the Document Camera port on the connection plate. 4. Plug the document camera s power cord into the outlet on the right side of the podium. 5. Make sure the document camera is turned on. 6. Press Document Camera button under Input Select on touchpad. 7. Use the auto focus controls on the top of the document camera, or use the remote control for finer adjustments.
