1 SMART Sympodium and Notebook Software 9.5 What is a SMART Sympodium? Equipped with the same software as SMART Board interactive whiteboards, SMART Sympodium interactive pen displays are perfect for presenting to groups large and small. The pen display's interactive screen connects to your computer and shows its image. Using the attached pen, you simply touch the screen to control applications and write notes. With a projector displaying this image on a large presentation screen, your audience can easily follow along. You can use the SMART Sympodium to: Interact: To control any computer application. Create: Write notes, draw diagrams and illustrate ideas. Focus: Highlight key information with electronic ink. Capture: Save, print or notes. 2 Pen-Tool Buttons You can write or draw over any application with the pen using the pen tools. Press a pen-tool button to write with black, blue or red digital ink, to erase digital ink, or to return the pen to mouse mode. Returns pen to mouse mode Selects color of digital ink Function Buttons The function buttons provide quick access to frequently used features of SMART Board software. Press a function button to launch the On-Screen Keyboard, open an application that helps you organize, save and share notes, use a palette of drawing tools, take a screen capture or make your next touch on the screen a right-click. 3 Orienting the SMART Sympodium A key step to using the SMART Sympodium is to orient the sympodium before you use it. To Orient your SMART Sympodium 1. Double click the SMART icon in the Windows system tray (in the lower right corner) or click the Start button, point to SMART Board Software, and click Smart Board or SMART Board driver. 2. From the menu, click Orient. 3. Select Standard (20 points) or Quick (9 points), click Next if necessary. 4. Start the orientation in the upper-left corner by using the stylus to press squarely on the yellow center of each red cross in the order specified by the large white arrow. Controlling Applications The SMART Sympodium can be used to control application programs such as Microsoft Word, Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Internet Explorer, Netscape, etc. To Double Click 1. Tap the stylus twice on the screen. To Right Click 1. Press the Right Mouse button on the console where the Pen Tool buttons are located. 2. Then tap the stylus on the screen. To Drag 1. Tap and hold the stylus on the screen. Do not let the stylus break contact with the screen. 2. Drag the stylus across the screen. Your normal mouse will also work if you prefer it to the stylus. Annotating Applications You can use the SMART Sympodium to annotate projected images. For instance, you can use the stylus and the Pen Tool buttons on the console to annotate an image in a PowerPoint presentation or to emphasize a passage of text from a web page. To Annotate a Projected Image 1. Select a Colored ink button from the Pen Tools on the console. 2. Write firmly and consistently on the SMART Sympodium. 3. When finished, select the left-click mouse button on the console to regain touch control of the board. NOTE: Your annotation will disappear the next time you touch the screen unless it has been saved. Training 3 9/26/2006

4 To Erase Annotations 1. Select the Eraser button on the console. 2. Use the stylus in a smooth motion over the annotation. 3. When finished, select the left-click mouse button on the console to regain touch control of the board. Controlling PowerPoint Presentations You can control a PowerPoint presentation being shown on a SMART Sympodium by using the three-button toolbar. To Control a PowerPoint Presentation 1. Open your PowerPoint presentation. Go to the Slide Show view (presentation full screen) 2. A three-button tool bar should appear onscreen. Use your finger to press the backward or forward buttons. SMART Notebook Software SMART Notebook Software is the application that lets you create and save notes written on the SMART Sympodium. SMART Notebook creates notebook files. These files can be edited and formatted from any computer that has SMART Notebook installed on it. To Open SMART Notebook 1. Click the SMART icon in the lower right corner of your desktop. 2. Click Notebook from the pop up menu. Training 4 9/26/2006

5 To Create Notes in SMART Notebook 3. Select a Colored ink button from the Pen Tools on the console. 4. Write firmly and consistently on the SMART Sympodium. To Add more Pages to your Notebook File 1. Click the Next Page button on the toolbar. To Revisit Pages in your Notebook File 1. Click the Previous Page button on the toolbar or click the Page Sorter tab then click the page you wish to revisit from the Page Sorter. To Insert a Blank Page 1. Click the page on the Page Sorter that comes before where you want to insert the blank page. 2. Then click the Insert Blank Page Button on the toolbar. NOTE: Blank pages are inserted AFTER the page that is selected. Training 5 9/26/2006

6 To Save a Notebook File 1. Click the Save button on the toolbar. 2. Select the location to save the file from the Save in drop down list. 3. In the File name box, enter a name for the file 4. Click Save. NOTE: You can have SMART Notebook installed on any computer (it does not have to be connected to a SMART Sympodium) so you can make edits at anytime or place. To Move Items on a Page 1. Click the Select button on the toolbar. 2. Then click the text or object you wish to select on a page. If necessary, use the round sizing icon to change the size of the area selected. 3. Position your mouse in the center of the selected area and drag to a new location. To Delete an Object on a Page 1. Click the Select button on the Simple toolbar. 2. Then click the text or object you wish to select on a page. If necessary, use the black sizing handles to change the size of the area selected. 3. Then click the Delete button on the Simple toolbar. To Delete a Page 1. Navigate to the appropriate page. 2. Click Edit on the Menu bar then click Delete Page. Training 6 9/26/2006

7 To Convert Written Text to Typed Text 1. Click the Select button on the toolbar. 2. Then click the text or object you wish to select on a page. 3. In the upper right hand corner of the selected area, click the drop down arrow. 4. From the drop down list select the word that most closely resembles the written text. To Format Typed Text 1. Click the Select button on the toolbar. 2. Then double click the text. 3. The Font toolbar will open. Then highlight the text and make any necessary formatting changes using the toolbar. 8 To Edit Typed Text 1. Click the Select button on the toolbar. 2. Then double click the text. This should put your cursor into the box. 3. Edit as normal. To Spell Check 1. Click Edit on the Menu bar, and then click Spelling Check. (Your page needs to be converted to typed text.) To Capture and Insert Images into Notebook Files 1. Click the Capture button on the toolbar. (This will open a Screen Capture toolbar.) 2. Minimize Notebook. 3. If you want to: a. Capture just a certain item or area found on your display, click the Area button on the Screen Capture toolbar and then drag around the area to be selected. As soon as you release your left mouse button, the selected area will become an image on a new page in your Notebook file. b. Capture an open window; click the Window button on the Screen Capture toolbar. Then click on the window that you want to capture and the window will become an image on a new page in your Notebook file. c. Capture your entire display (all open programs, windows, toolbars, etc); click the Screen button on the Screen Capture toolbar. The contents of your display will be captured and will become an image on a new page in your Notebook file. 4. Capture any shape or part of the screen by clicking the Freehand Screen button on Capture toolbar. When you finish with the Screen Capture toolbar, you can click the X to close it. 9 Search Field To Add a Template (Background) to a Page 1. Select a page from the Page Sorter toolbar or insert a new page. 2. Click Insert on the Menu bar, click Picture/Template, and then click From Gallery. 3. The Gallery opens on the side of screen. Click the plus sign to expand the appropriate category. Then click the plus sign to expand to the appropriate sub category. Finally select the topic. Or type key word in search field locate topic. 4. From the available templates click the one you wish to apply then from the drop down arrow click Insert in Notebook. Training 9 9/26/2006

10 To Use Smart Notebook as a Full Screen Whiteboard 1. Click the Full Screen button on the toolbar. This button acts as a toggle and can also be used to return you to normal mode. To Create Web Pages from SMART Notebook Files 1. Create a folder to store your HTML files that will be created. 2. Make sure to save the Notebook file first before trying to create Web Pages. 3. Click File on the Menu bar, click Export. then click Webpage. 4. From the drop menu locate the folder you created to store HTML files. Click Open. 5 Choose a name for the first file to be created. Be sure to observe web-naming conventions. 6. Click Save. 7. Then upload the contents of the folder you created to your web space or WebCT Vista. Create links to these files. ** You must have the SVG graphics viewer installed. Students must also have it installed. To Create PDF files from SMART Notebook Files 1. Click File on the Menu bar, then click Export, then click PDF. 2. From the drop down menu choose the location to save your PDF file. 3. Choose a name for the file to be created. Be sure to observe web-naming conventions. 4. Click Save. 5. Then upload the files you created to your web space or WebCT Vista. Create links to these files. Training 10 9/26/2006

11 To Convert PowerPoint Slides to Notebook files 1. Click File on the Menu bar, and then click Import 2. Locate your PowerPoint file. 3. Click Open. Note: Once the PowerPoint file has been converted to a Notebook file objects on the file can now be manipulated like Notebook files. You can change the Notebook file back to a PowerPoint file. 12 Floating Tools The Floating Tools offer a portable, customizable palette of tools that floats over all applications on your board and allows you to perform a wide variety of operations. To Access Floating Tools Click the SMART Board icon in the lower right corner of your desktop Then click Floating Tools. The More button on Floating Tools allows you to customize items such as the Pen and the Highlighter. It will also allow you to add even more functionality to the Floating Toolbar. Adding tools such as a calculator, screen shade, magnifier, and spotlight makes Floating Tools more versatile. To Close Floating Tools 1. Click the X to close it. Training 12 9/26/2006
