1 SMART Board Interactive Whiteboard Setup with USB Cable The instructions below are for the SMART Board interactive whiteboard 500 series and apply to both desktop and laptop computers. Ready Light USB Port 9-pin Serial Port Short DB9 Connector Connecting the SMART Board Interactive Whiteboard to Your Computer 1 To install SMART Board software, insert the CD-ROM that came with your SMART Board interactive whiteboard and follow the on-screen instructions. If you don t have a CD-ROM, or if you re not sure whether your CD-ROM is for the latest version of SMART Board software, download the most up-to-date version of the software from 2 Shut down your computer. 3 Insert the USB cable s short DB9 connector into the 9-pin serial port under the lower right side of the SMART Board interactive whiteboard and tighten the screws. 4 Insert the USB connector (at the other end of the USB cable) into the USB port on your computer. 5 Turn on the computer. Verify the Ready Light on the right side of the SMART Pen Tray turns red to indicate that the interactive whiteboard is on. If this light fails to turn red, verify that all connections are made as indicated above. 6 The Ready Light on the pen tray will turn from red to green, indicating that the interactive whiteboard and the computer have established communication. 1
2 Orienting the SMART Board Interactive Whiteboard You must orient the interactive whiteboard upon initial installation, or if your whiteboard or projector has been moved or jostled. Ensure the projector, computer and SMART Board software are running. There are two ways to begin the orientation process: 1 Simultaneously press and hold the two SMART Pen Tray buttons. or Pen Tray Buttons Press the SMART Board Tools icon in the Microsoft Windows Notification Area, and select Orient. Notification Area 2 Begin the orientation at the upper-left corner. Press your finger or pen squarely on the yellow center of each red cross in the order indicated by the white, diamondshaped background. 3 If you re dissatisfied with the precision of a particular orientation point, simply press the left arrow key on the attached keyboard to redo a poorly aligned orientation point. Changing Orientation Settings You can increase the accuracy of your finger press for applications requiring greater precision. Orientation Screen 1 Press the SMART Board Tools icon in the Notification Area, and select Control Panel. Press the SMART Board Settings button. SMART Board Settings Button 2 From the drop-down menu select Alignment/Orientation Precision. 3 Select Fine (20 Points) and press OK. Drop-down menu Select Fine (20 Points) 4 From the control panel, press the Align/Orient the SMART Board button to begin the orientation process. 3 Using the Floating Tools Toolbar The Floating Tools enhance the options already available through the pen tray, placing the features you use most literally at your fingertips. This versatile toolbar floats over any open application on your interactive whiteboard. Accessing the Floating Tools Pick up a pen from the SMART Pen Tray to launch the Floating Tools toolbar. Initially, only two buttons will be displayed the Area Capture button and the Undo button. Press the arrow on the right of the toolbar to see the expanded default toolbar. Default Toolbar Press to expand If you pick up a pen and the Floating Tools toolbar does not appear, press the SMART Board icon in the Windows Notification Area at the bottom right of your screen, then select Floating Tools. Moving the Floating Tools Use the border on the left side of the toolbar to move it anywhere on your desktop. Using the Default Floating Tools Press any button on the Floating Tools toolbar and use your finger to control that feature. Expanded Default Toolbar Notification Area Button Use this tool to Capture an area of the screen into Notebook software Stop using other tools and return cursor to mouse mode Write or draw in digital ink Highlight an area of the screen with translucent ink for emphasis without overwriting the object Undo your previous action. This tool toggles between two states, Undo and Redo. Redo an action you cleared in error. This is the second of the two states mentioned above. Erase digital ink Make your next press on the interactive whiteboard a right-click Open the drop-down menu to personalize toolbar functions NOTE: If the Floating Tools toolbar does not appear when picking up a pen, the application you are working in may be Ink Aware. If the application is Ink Aware, these buttons will be available in the application s toolbar. Floating Tools do not appear when running these applications because you can already write or draw over these applications without the tools from the Floating Tools toolbar. Many popular applications, like Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel, are Ink Aware. When you use an application that is Ink Aware, whatever you write or draw on the interactive product can be incorporated as an actual component of the file, rather than an external note created over the file SMART Technologies Inc. 4 SMART Board Tools Accessing the SMART Board Tools Press the SMART Board icon in the Microsoft Windows Notification Area at the bottom right of your screen. The SMART Board tools will appear. If you cannot see the SMART Board icon, select Start > Programs > SMART Board Software > SMART Board Tools. You will then see the SMART Board icon in the Windows Notification Area. Using the SMART Board Tools An explanation of each of the options available from SMART Board Tools is outlined below. The touch sensitivity of your whiteboard allows you to operate each of these tools with your finger. Selecting Opens Use this tool to Notebook Recorder Video Player Keyboard Windows Notification Save notes written on a SMART Board interactive whiteboard or at your desktop as a series of pages. Import graphics, text and Macromedia Flash content into your Notebook file. Export your Notebook file in HTML, PDF or image file formats. Record everything that happens on the interactive whiteboard, regardless of which application you re using. SMART Recorder also allows you to record audio through a microphone and automatically combine audio and data into one file for playback on any computer. Write or draw over video during a presentation. You can use SMART Video Player to play video files located on your computer or view content from a camera, VCR, CD-ROM or DVDs. SMART Video Player is compatible with most video cameras, projectors, scanners and document cameras. Type or edit text in any application without leaving the whiteboard. You can also use the keyboard to convert handwritten notes into typed text. Floating Tools Access the pen tool, highlighter, eraser, screen capture and other key functions. 4
5 Selecting Opens Use this tool to Other SMART Tools > Screen Shade Focus the attention of your audience with a shade that covers your desktop. Gradually drag the shade left or right, up or down to reveal the underlying text and graphics. Other SMART Tools > Spotlight Highlight an area of your screen. Select the Menu button to change the shape of your Spotlight, set the transparency level of the shaded area or exit the Spotlight view. Other SMART Tools > Magnifier Control Panel Enlarge any part of your screen to show a more detailed view. Two windows appear when you select the Magnifier. Use the smaller window to select the area you would like to magnify. You can drag it anywhere on the screen with your finger. The bigger window displays an enlarged view of the area you selected. Configure a variety of software and hardware options. From here, you can administer SMART Board Settings, orient your SMART Board, personalize the pen tray, connect to a new SMART Board interactive whiteboard, and manage Ink Aware applications, languages and wireless connections. Orient Orient your SMART Board interactive whiteboard. Orientation ensures your touch is registered correctly when you are using the interactive whiteboard. It may help to view the orientation process as fine-tuning your interactive whiteboard. Check for Updates Check for the most recent updates to your SMART Board software. 6 Notebook Software Toolbars The Notebook Toolbar The Notebook toolbar gives you access to a number of tools for working with your Notebook file and changing the properties of objects in the file. By default, the toolbar appears at the top of the Notebook page. If you find it more convenient to have the toolbar at the bottom of the page, select an area of clear space on the toolbar and drag down. The Capture toolbar is described below Select any object on the page Write or draw on a Notebook page with the pen tool Write or draw on a Notebook page with the creative pen tool Erase annotations on a Notebook page Draw a line Create a shape Create a text-entry box for typing on a Notebook page Set the current color of a tool, shape or object Select the line width of a tool or a selected object Set the transparency of a tool or selected object Select the line properties of a tool or a selected object Launch full screen view The Capture Toolbar The Capture toolbar allows you to capture a picture of a portion of a screen, a window or a full screen to a Notebook page. To access the Screen Capture toolbar, press the Capture button on the Notebook toolbar. Menu Item Select this menu item to Capture a portion of a screen. Press and drag diagonally to outline the area you want to capture. Release pressure once the area is selected. Your capture will be saved to a Notebook page. Capture an active window or a portion of an active window. Press within the window you want to capture. Release pressure once the desired window appears as a hatched area. Your capture will be saved to a Notebook page. Capture the entire screen. Set up your screen the way you would like it to look. Then press the Capture Screen button. 7 The Object Drop-Down Menu The Object Drop-Down Menu gives you access to the functions most commonly used when working with an object. Access the menu by selecting an object and press the arrow that appears in the top right corner of the object. Menu Item Clone Cut Copy Paste Delete Check Spelling Lock in Place Select this menu item to Make an exact copy of the selected object. Remove the selection from the current Notebook file and place it in the clipboard. Copy the selection and place it in the clipboard. The original object or objects remains on the Notebook page. Insert the contents of the clipboard in the upper-left corner of the Notebook page. Delete the selection from the current Notebook file. Check the spelling of a selected text object. Lock the selected object to ensure its properties cannot be changed. Grouping Order Group or ungroup objects. Choose Group to have two or more selected objects act as a single object. Select Ungroup for the ability to manipulate the objects in a group individually. Ungroup will also break apart a handdrawn or handwritten object to single pen strokes. Change which objects are in front of or behind other objects. Use the Bring Forward or Send Backward command to reorder an object one layer at a time. Bring an object directly to the top layer of the page with the Bring to Front command. Use the Send to Back command to send an object to the bottom layer of the page. Hyperlink Add a link to a website or file. A hyperlink button appears in the bottom-left corner of the object. Press the button to open the web browser or application required and go to the selected location. Properties Modify the properties of an object. The properties available for modification depend on the type of object you have selected. The options include Outline Color, Fill Color, Line Properties, Transparency and Font. Special Menu Items Some objects have special menu items not available to other objects. Handwritten text features the Recognize menu item. Macromedia Flash objects offer the Flash menu item. Menu Item Recognize Flash Select this menu item to Transform your handwritten notes into typed text. Control your Flash file during a presentation with Macromedia Flash commands. Play begins playing a paused Flash movie. Rewind brings you to the beginning of the Flash file and pauses the movie. Step Forward advances file slightly and pauses the movie. Step Back rewinds the file slightly and pauses the movie. Loop turns looping on or off. A looped Flash file repeats indefinitely. Flash files loop by default SMART Technologies Inc.
