1 PREPARING FOR IELTS IELTS stands for International English Language Testing System. It measures the ability to communicate with the four basic language skills - listening, reading, writing, and speaking. IELTS has become the choice of many universities to benchmark the level of students English proficiency and to enable them to know if students are prepared for further education. Here at the Centre for Languages, we have two programmes to offer students who long to take the IELTS test, namely, the IELTS Workshop and the Intensive IELTS Preparatory Programme. Both programmes focus only on the Academic Module. The Intensive IELTS Preparatory Programme is a onemonth intensive programme for learners who need that little extra time and facilitation to improve in the four language skills - listening, reading, writing, and speaking which is needed to achieve that desired band score. The IELTS Workshop is a 12-hour programme for learners who may have the foundations to score the desired band score, but who need assistance to sharpen the skills needed to answer IELTS test questions. 2 IELTS WORKSHOP Programme Description A 12-hour programme for learners who may have the foundations to score the desired band score, but who need assistance to sharpen the skills needed to answer IELTS test questions. Learning Objectives By the end of the programme, learners should be able to: have sharpened skills in answering each test section know what pitfalls to avoid when answering each test section Learning Outcomes Upon successful completion of the programme, learners will be able to: have better understanding on tackling each sub-skill in the many different prescribed situations and question types in each test section, and be more confident during the IELTS test Mode of Delivery Face-to-face active learning class time, classroom discussion/participation, hands-on activities, oral presentations and peer learning practices Learning Objectives 12 hours over three weekends (Saturdays) Learning Hours 12 classroom hours Class times Saturday mornings from 9.00 am pm Intakes January, March, April, May, June, August, October, December 2015 (To be further confirmed) Updated: Mar 26, 2015 Page 2 of 7

4 Intensive IELTS Preparatory Programme Programme Description This one-month intensive programme is specifically designed to prepare learners for an IELTS band score of 6 to 7. The comprehensive and dynamic nature of the programme is suitable for those who aim to fine-tune the sub-skills needed to achieve that higher score, and for those who are committed to receiving the best preparation for an IELTS test. Specifically, this programme is intended for: * learners who are in pursuit of a postgraduate degree that requires an IELTS entry band score of more than 6 * learners who are looking to study overseas at universities that require an IELTS entrance band score of at least 6 * UCSI English Enrichment Programme (EEP) learners who would like to take their English a step further after the completion of Level 10 * learners who would like to score beyond a current band score of 5.5 * learners who would like to have official proof for his/her academic English language competency Learning Objectives By the end of the programme, learners should be able to: * improve the basic four skills of learning English listening, speaking, writing and reading, with an additional fifth skill: appreciation of classroom diversity * obtain an IELTS band score of at least 6 Learning Outcomes Upon successful completion of the programme, learners will: * communicate more fluently and effectively in English, with a higher competency in listening, reading, writing, and speaking skills * have a higher level of command in grammar and vocabulary within an academic or work-based environment Mode of Delivery Face-to-face active learning class time, classroom discussion/participation, hands-on activities, class presentation and peer learning practices. 6 Programme Outline Table 2 below shows the programme outline for this intensive programme, focusing on the four skills in the Academic Module. With many written practice tests to complete, students will also be engaged in oral and aural practices to hone their listening and speaking skills. Table 2.
