Cómo se dice?, Quia Online Workbook / Lab Manual COURSE DESCRIPTION: This is a beginning course that stresses the fundamentals of listening, speaking, reading, and writing of the Spanish language. An understanding of the culture of the native speakers is developed. The course is designed to develop confidence and proficiency in the spoken language while introducing relevant cultural information pertaining to Hispanic America and Spain.

2 COURSE OBJECTIVES: Students who successfully complete this course can expect to achieve a proficient level of skill in the four basic language skills, namely: 1. Listening Comprehension as it concerns basic, everyday topics one encounters in an Hispanic environment. You will build a firm base of knowledge from which to expand according to your desire to learn and your willingness to work. 2. Speaking Proficiency that will enable the student to ask and answer questions in Spanish concerning daily activities, basic concerns, and simple topics. 3. Reading Comprehension. The student will be able to read with simultaneous (and general) comprehension the edited texts customarily used for supplementary reading on the first-year level of college work. 4. Writing. You will be able to write down dialogue lines that reflect basic situations of daily life. You will also learn to express basic feelings, ideas, requests as you respond, in writing to oral questions. This will enable you to become comfortable with the language and it will be used as a tool in order to reach the goal of oral proficiency. You will have regular dictation exercises in the class. As your instructor, my personal goal is to ensure that every one of my students gets an equal opportunity to develop his/her communication capabilities in the target language, thus allowing them to function effectively in the Hispanic world. I sincerely hope to spark your interest in the Hispanic culture as well, as I believe this will broaden your perspective and enrich your life. GRADING POLICY: All forms of evaluations i.e. quizzes, exams, tapes and compositions, will be kept by the instructor. The grading will be broken down in the following manner: Tests: 3 75 % Participation 15% Lab Manual 10% Grading Scale: A: B: C: D: F: Participation and attendance: Participation and attendance are essential for a language learner. You are expected to attend class regularly, arrive on time, and stay the entire class session. If you leave early it will count as an absence. Students will be responsible for signing the Attendance Sheet each day of class. Do not sign for someone else. This is a violation of the USF Student Code of Conduct.

3 As normal ethical behavior in an academic environment, respect for the professor and classmates is required. Questions from students will be accepted when the professor has finished explaining the material. You must be prepared and ready to participate actively in class. Assigned textbook practice exercises must be completed prior to class. These practice exercises will help you be ready for the next class. Participation is 15% of your final grade. If you are not in class you are not actively participating and this will affect your final grade.. If a student must miss class, it is her/his responsibility to complete the work missed and to return to class prepared for the current assignment. Each day you attend class you will earn participation points. If you are absent from class, you will not earn participation points for that da. The participation portion of your grade will be reduced by 5 percent (5%) after your third (3) absence. Assignments will not be accepted late, unless proper documentation is presented for health reasons or unexpected hardships. NO MAKE UP EXAMS. Please do not be absent during an exam day. Unless you can provide documentation to explain your absence from class, an exam will not be rescheduled and you will receive a 0 grade. In case of an absence, it is the student s responsibility to keep up with class work covered and assignments. Please turn OFF all cell phones and beepers during class. I consider the use of a cell phone, to be a disruption to the learning process. You will be asked to leave the classroom. Text messaging is totally prohibited at all times during class. This class is subject to the USF Student Code of Conduct. It is your responsibility to read it: Please be ON TIME to class. Please refrain from leaving the classroom for any reason other than an emergency. 5 In order to complete this course successfully and to obtain the maximum benefits, of the language, it is necessary to complete the workbook and the laboratory on line. These tasks are drills and learning complements for each chapter. They need to be done simultaneously with the class lecture and not to be done at the last minute. They are an excellent review for exams. Labs are one credit hour. If one does not pass the labs, one will not plass the class. Labs are graded as pass or fail (S/U). In order to pass the lab, one needs to make a minimum of a 75% for each chapter. In order to pass the lab, one needs to make a minimum of a 75% for each chapter. LAB POLICY: Students who don t complete the workbook/lab manual will receive the grade of F in the class, and a U for the lab. You will have to repeat the course. Students who receive a grade of D+ or lower in the course, will not pass the lecture nor the laboratory. (You must receive a 70% in the class in order to pass). No late work will be accepted for the lab. One must meet the deadline. If you do not have an account, you need to create one. To do so, follow these steps: 1) Go to and click Students, then click Create a new account. 2) Select a username and password and enter your information, then click Submit. Note: Remember to write down you username and password and be sure to select the correct time zone. Also, please enter a valid address so we can send you your passwork if you forget it. ENTERING THE BOOK KEY AND COURSE CODE Enter the book key and course code to complete the enrollment process. You may need to purchase a book key, you may already have a book key that you purchased separately, or you may already have activated the book for a previous course. Depending on you situation, use one of the procedures below. The course code is listed at the top of this page. Once you have completed this step, the system lists the course and book on the Student Workstation home page. To enter additional books, enter a book key in the Enter book key field and click Go. Note: Book keys can only be used once. Your book key will become invalid after you use it. I need to purchase a book key: Follow this procedure: 1) Go to and log in. 2) Click Bookstore at the top of the Student Workstation window. 3) Enter search criteria for the book and click Search. 4) Locate the book in the search results and click Buy. 5) Enter the course code,, and Click Next. 6) Proceed through the purchase process.

The system displays the Student Workstation and lists the book under the My books heading. 4) Beside the book listing, enter the course code, in the Enter course code field and click Go. 5) If necessary, select a class (section) and click Submit. USING QUIA: To access your Student Workstation in the future, go to and log in. Here, you can open your book, submit activities, view your results, and view your instructor s feedback.
