With multiple control interfaces, this controller can be used for automation with serial/usb or simply by a user with the color touch display. When combined with the free Zallus Profile Creator Tool, applications easily extend from reflow ovens to controlling clay and ceramic ovens. Profiles can be created and saved to the controller with a few simple clicks. For more advanced applications, controlling cooling fans as well as multiple elements is possible with this controllers multiple outputs. 6/7/2015 1

2 PROFILE CREATOR BRIEF: Profile Creator is a free tool designed to allow for painless creation and modification of profiles. Points are created simply by clicking and can be dragged or deleted once created. This tool then allows you to save created profiles to the controller or to your PC. Likewise the controller also allows you to load profiles from your PC. This tool also gives you control of the digital inputs which can be either 1 or 0. This includes a buzzer which allows you to choose when it will go off. Note this tool can also be used to collect and save the temperature data that you receive from the controller during operation. Other Windows: COMPLIANCE VERIFICATION: To aid with reflowing which is a common application of this product, compliance tools were provided to check drawn and measured profiles versus compliance standards. J-STD-20 is used for a reflow standard which is a moisture sensitivity specification. Numerous semiconductor companies will specify their parts as being compliant with this standard which is why it is often used as a reflow specification as well moisture specification. USER SETTINGS: Numerous device settings can be stored via this menu. Control system gains can be configured, a preheat to temperature, backlight brightness, switching frequency, and buzzer frequency can be configured. 6/7/2015 2

Typical is 200mA CONTROLLER OUTPUT PIN OUT: Name Description Voltage Relay Aux Fan TXD/RXD GPIO Main solid state relay output. Hookup the solid state relay + and to this terminal. Secondary temperature controlled output. This pin can be setup to be the opposite of the main(useful for active fan control). Note by default it is disabled. This pin is a digital output that can be setup in the profile creator. It does not necessarily need to be used for fan control. TXD/RXD are for the controller s serial baud interface. Using the AT command, this interface has all the same control capacity as the screen & the PC GUI. This pin is a digital output that can be setup in the profile creator. 5 OVEN RECOMMENDATIONS: FOR REFLOW APPLICATION In order for the control system to track the profile, the system must be able to change quickly. Convection, conduction, and radiation are the 3 common types of heat transfer. Most ovens rely on convection which is a slow method of heat transfer. Radiation is ideal but radiation based ovens, such as infrared ovens, are hard to find. However, there is an element type which is somewhere in-between convection and radiation which are milky white quartz heating elements as seen below. Milky White Quartz Heating Elements If you can find a reasonably priced pure far field infrared oven I would recommend that. More likely though quartz will be all you will be able to find. I would recommend an oven with 2 milky white quartz elements. There are ovens with 4 but they are also larger and more costly. Since the oven is larger and has more thermal mass, you may not necessarily get better ramp rates. Far Field Infrared Elements Far Field Infrared elements transfer heat directly to the PCB without having to transfer energy to the air first. Consequently, such elements are much quicker. Shiny objects do reflect some of the power which usually isn t an issue for PCBs which have a colored solder mask as well as black IC packages. 6/7/2015 5

6 Thermocouple Placement: FOR REFLOW APPLICATION Bend a paper clip and use it to maintain the position of the thermocouple. Then elevate the thermocouple half an inch above the board. Thi User Manual s is a good tradeoff for measuring radiation and convection based ovens. In the case of radiation based ovens, the pcb will be hotter than the air and the opposite is true for convection. KIT CONTENTS: This image displays the kit contents.
