Overview Natural Elements Used in Storytelling Strands Just like each of us, every rock in earth s jewelry box has a history and a story to tell. Raw minerals, crystals, gems, and other natural elements are genuine and artful. They are earthy and soulful. Stones can trigger memories we have from our past such as places we ve been or loved ones we want to keep close. We may be drawn to certain gems because of color or texture, a birthstone, or a healing quality they possess. When put on a strand and worn as jewelry, they will not only give a finishing touch to your wardrobe, but these Storytelling Strands can also be conversation pieces that bring you great joy. All of my jewelry creations are handmade and most pieces are one of a kind. The stones are all natural and have been collected from my travels all over the United States as well as other parts of the world including Australia, New Zealand, and Peru. I consciously try to honor these gemstones in order to let the finished strands tell their stories. Please enjoy this book! Barb McReynolds

Kyanite Natural Elements Used in Storytelling Strands Earth tone colors, usually blue to blue-black, sometimes streaked; also white, gray or green Kyanite is a blue silicate material found in aluminum-rich environments. Forming in thin, blade-like crystals that often radiate from a common center, similar to a cat s eye, kyanite is found in metamorphic rock. The white or gray variety is called rhaeticite. Kyanite is unusual in that its hardness depends on the direction in which a crystal is stressed. Most samples come from Brazil, Myanmar, Switzerland, and in the mountainous regions of Montana and North Carolina in the United States. Acts as a catalyst to speed up other processes, and makes rapid links between all things Calms and releases blocked emotions Brings tranquility and quietness, and is known for its grounding and tranquil nature Aids meditation and access to all levels of awareness Enhances creativity and sex drive

Labradorite Gray with iridescence of green, yellow, orange, and peacock blue Labradorite is a rare form of feldspar found in metamorphic or igneous rocks and is named after the region of Canada where it was discovered. It is noted for its stunning iridescence, caused by light bouncing off inclusions of magnetite. This unique effect is known as labradorescence. Gemstones with a high degree of labradorescence are called spectrolite. This rare stone is also mined in Australia, Finland, Norway, Russia, and the United States. Encourages us to embrace new ideas and opportunities Stimulates imagination Provides quick relief from worries and tensions and relieves insomnia Used to detoxify the body and slow the aging process Helps alleviate bone disorders, especially arthritis and rheumatism

Lapis Lazuli Deep blue with white and gold flecks Lapis lazuli usually occurs in crystalline marble as a result of contact metamorphism. It has a history that stretches back over five thousand years. A rock rather than a crystal, lapis lazuli s main component is blue lazurite. It sometimes includes sodalite, usually pyrite, and often has a matrix of calcite. It is likely that the ancient Egyptians got their lapis from the same mining areas that are in use today; Afghanistan has the best sources. Other sources include Chile, Russia, and the San Gabriel Mountains of California, in the United States. Associated with truth, balance and justice Assists if you feel depressed or anxious Enhances one s eyesight, intellect, and awareness Assists the immune system, respiratory system, and nervous system Relieves headaches, particularly migraines

Lava Rock Usually black or gray; red Volcanic (lava) rock is formed from magma erupted from a volcano. It is different from other igneous rocks by being of volcanic origin. They are the most common rock types on Earth s surface, particularly in the oceans. Brings stability in changing times Provides guidance and understanding Drives away anger Promotes strength Aids fertility

Lodalite Red, green, orange, and cream Lodalite is a type of quartz crystal with inclusions of many possible colors and types and no two are alike. This uncommon stone is also called inclusion quartz, garden quartz, landscape quartz, or scenic quartz and was formed many millions of years ago in only one location, the Minas Gerais area of Brazil. Brings knowledge from your past lives Promotes energetic shifting so that healing will occur Promotes acceptance and emotional balance Relieves tension and stress Aids with heartburn, vertigo, memory, and thyroid issues

Magnesite White; also gray, pink, brown or yellow Magnesite occurs in veins in magnesium-rich rock types and has been found in modern sediments, caves, and soils. The most common form of magnesite is white, microcrystalline, porous masses that are dull in luster, and have the appearance of unglazed porcelain. Magnesite was detected on Mars by infrared technology; deposits of this stone have also been found in quite a few locations including Austria, Italy, Poland, South Africa, with the finest specimens coming from Brazil. Promotes imagination and visualization Relieves anxiety and stress Relieves muscle spasms, and aids with menstrual and general tension Relieves headaches and migraines; assists with constipation Helps people who have bone and teeth problems

Malachite Bright green with dark green or black concentric bands Malachite is formed when carbonated water and limestone are combined with copper; its bright green color indicates that copper is present. A secondary mineral of copper deposits, malachite is often found alongside azurite. Single crystals are rare; it more commonly forms nodules or radiating masses. Malachite is a soft stone that once polished and cut, can be used for ornaments and jewelry. Large deposits are mined in Africa, Australia, Chile, and Russia. Opens up your imagination and promotes the development of new ideas Relieves pain and aids recovery after exhaustion Beneficial in the health of the heart and lowers high blood pressure Recommended for the health of joints, torn muscles, and arthritis Aids digestion

Milky Quartz Clear to white Milky quartz, the most common variety of crystalline quartz, is pure white, either opaque or translucent, and owes its color to tiny bubbles of air or water contained within the quartz. When other impurities, such as iron, slightly color the crystal, it is known as common quartz. Areas of increased milkiness often occur toward the base of clear quartz crystals again the result of tiny air or water bubbles. Common in mountainous regions, veins of milky quartz can be seen threading their way across exposed and eroded rock surfaces. Gently releases difficult emotions Calms an overactive mind Relieves pain, stress, and tension Promotes emotional healing and acceptance Aids in heartburn, immune system, kidneys, memory, and healing after surgery

Mookaite Marbled reddish-rose and yellow Named for the Mooka Creek area in Western Australia where it is mined, this stunning quartz mineral has soft, banded areas of red, brown, and yellow, resembling layers of colored sands. Mookaite is a sedimentary rock, which, like flint, has been formed from the opaline, skeletal remains of tiny creatures, deposited in an ancient sea. It is found exclusively in Australia and carries the same range of colors as natural ochres and earth pigments. Helps to achieve goals in a relaxed and practical way Promotes an ageless spirit willing to accept change and seek new experiences Aids in decision making Assists with the purification of the blood and helps heal wounds Promotes flexibility if you have mobility issues

Moonstone Pearly white, cream, yellow, blue There are two moonstones. Adularia moonstone has an almost transparent pale gray, silvery white, or blue shimmer. Albite moonstone is in the feldspar group and is semi-transparent with a pale, shimmering reflection. Larger crystals are rare, and moonstone is usually found in microcrystalline massive form. The most important source of moonstone is Sri Lanka; other locations moonstone can be found are Australia, Burma, India, Mexico, Madagascar, Norway, Poland, and the United States. Enhances intuition and imagination Brings good fortune and promotes inspiration Balances the body s blood and lymph system Relieves menstrual cramps and balances hormonal cycles Relieves indigestion, especially if stress-related

Moss Agate Clear with shades of green and brown inclusion Moss agate is a translucent chalcedony quartz with inclusions of green and brown manganese oxides, hornblende and iron. This stone is formed from silicon dioxide and includes minerals of a green color embedded in chalcedony, forming filaments and other patterns appearing like moss. Not a true agate, moss agate is usually formed from weathered volcanic rocks and is mined in Australia, Europe, and North America. Represents tenacity and steady progress Releases pent-up emotions Increases optimism, and boosts sense of potential Enhances concentration, persistence, endurance, and success Used to speed up recovery and cleanse the circulatory system

Natural Quartz One of the most abundant minerals on the planet, quartz can be found in a wide range of shapes, depending on how it was formed. Below are examples of natural quartz. Double termination Double terminated crystals have distinct points at both ends and radiate or absorb energies at both ends concurrently. Useful to absorb negative energy and break old patterns Sometimes used to overcome addictions Promotes energy flow within the body Phantom quartz A phantom quartz crystal is one in which a smaller ghostlike crystal can be seen encompassed in the larger crystal. This quartz is sometimes called ghost crystals and shadow crystals. Points the way toward growth and evolution Enhances meditation Helps to recover repressed memories in order to put the past into perspective

Obsidian Black, greenish black, gray, or red-brown Formed by rapidly cooling lava, obsidian is found mainly in volcanic regions. Its black coloring comes from its iron content, and it is more like glass in structure than crystal. It was prized by ancient cultures for its ability to be worked to razor sharp edges for arrows and spears. Obsidian is found anywhere that volcanic activity has occurred. Some important sources are Afghanistan, Japan, Mexico, South America, and parts of the United States. Symbolizes self-control and resilience Helps block any negative energy Grounds and protects us Shields the very sensitive from depression Rebalances the digestive system

Onyx Natural Elements Used in Storytelling Strands Black and white bands; sometimes just black Onyx is a variety of agate comprising bands of quartz, chalcedony, and opal that have been laid down in colored layers within rock cavities. Black onyx is the most famous variety, but is not as common as onyx with colored bands. Most black onyx on the market is artificially colored. Onyx is the most common mineral found in the world. Locations include Brazil, India, Madagascar, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and the United States. Grounds and concentrates energy while helping to cleanse and purify Enables the wearer to change bad habits Provides a good night s sleep Recommended for kidney and liver disease Assists in accelerating the growth of skin, hair, and nails

Opal All colors Natural Elements Used in Storytelling Strands The internal structure of opal makes it diffract light and may take on many colors. Opal is a delicate material which, when exposed to the air, will lose water molecules, leaving small fractures. Commonly found in the United States; also Brazil, Czech Republic, Hungary, Indonesia, Slovakia, and Turkey. Blue opal (pale blue, turquoise, green) Soothes erratic emotions Fire opal (rich red-orange) Activates enthusiasm and initiates new ideas Pink opal (soft pink, white) Brings compassion and a resolution of painful memories White opal (milky white, clear) Enhances memory, imagination, and creativity
