1 Exploring Technology Levels: Grade 8 Course Description: What is Exploring Tech? Exploring Tech is a comprehensive action based educational that introduce students to the technology systems. Students will also develop problem solving skills, and relate engineering and technology to Science Technology Engineering Math (STEM) Class safety, design brief, sketching, and measuring Electronics, energy/power technologies, and alternative energy Introduction to Robotics Introduction to Game Design Architectural Modeling and Tower Design Engineering Technology Course Description: A foundational engineering design course that introduces basic problem solving and documentation skills. Various aspects of engineering will be explored along with technology s environmental, societal, political, and economic impacts on our world. By utilizing problem solving skills, students will develop essential abilities and attitudes that will in turn expand their occupational opportunities in the world of engineering. Class safety, design brief, sketching, and measuring Electronics, energy/power technologies, and alternative energy CO2 Car Design and Construction Computer Aided Drafting CAD Design using AutoCAD Inventor Software Mill Project Robotics Design, Automation, and BASIC/STAMP Programming
2 Information and Communication Technology Course Description: An introductory course focused on digital technologies and what it means to be living in a digital world. Students will gain an understanding of how digital technologies impacts the environment, society, and the economy. Students will develop a foundation in essential abilities and attitudes that will in turn expand their opportunities in the world of information and communications. Photoshop Electronic Communication Illustrator Film and Photography Robotics Design, Automation, and BASIC/STAMP Programming Computer Technology Levels: Grades 9 Units of Credit: 0.5 Prerequisite: Basic Computer and Keyboarding Proficiency Course Description: An introduction to computer application software (Windows Operating System, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Google Apps, Internet, & Computer Basics). An understanding of computer and online ethics, social media, the use of information resources, and electronic mail is also included. Skills will be demonstrated by creating a project for a different content area. Students will have the opportunity to take the industry certification tests in order to become a Microsoft Office Specialist. Breakdown: More for honors students. The analytical minded student (business & management). It follows more of a step by step approach to learning. This is a highly rigorous class which can also count as college credit if you pass the industry certification exams and the industry tests for IC3 certification.
3 Exploring Computer Science (ECS) Levels: Grades 9 Units of Credit: 0.5 Prerequisite: Basic Computer, Keyboarding Proficiency, and Algebra Course Description: Exploring Computer Science is designed to introduce students to the breadth of the field of computer science through an exploration of engaging and accessible topics (human and computer interaction, problem solving, and Scratch computer programming). Rather than focusing the entire course on learning particular software tools or programming languages, the course is designed to focus on the conceptual ideas of computing and help students understand why certain tools or languages might be utilized to solve particular problems. The goal of Exploring Computer Science is to develop in students the computational thinking practices of algorithm development, problem solving and programming within the context of problems that are relevant to the lives of today s students. Students will also be introduced to topics such as interface design, limits of computers and societal and ethical issues. Breakdown: More for general students. The design minded student (programming & design). It follows more of a discovery and problem solving approach to learning. Exploring Business & Marketing Levels: Grade 8 9 Course Description: Students will be exposed to the fundamental concepts of business and marketing. Topics of study include economics, finance, the job application process, entrepreneurship, and leadership. Class projects include a stock market simulation, cereal taste test focus group, marketing project, and a shark tank business plan competition. Students will also learn about the Business & Marketing career pathways, FBLA, and DECA.
4 Business Digital Literacy Levels: 8 Prerequisites: Keyboarding I Course Description: This course is an introduction to computer literacy. Students will have opportunities to use technology and develop skills that encourage creativity, critical thinking, productivity, and collaboration in the classroom and day to day life. Skills will be demonstrated by creating a project for a different content area. This course is aligned with national and international standards and the Utah Core to prepare students across multiple levels of skills. Students will complete this course with a prerequisite to move into the high school Computer Technology course. FACS Exploration Levels: Grade 8 Course Description: This 8 th grade semester long class is an opportunity to learn essential life skills. It is designed to build on what students learned in College and Career Awareness FACS. It is focused on developing skills in food and nutrition, childcare, interior design, sewing, family relationships, and personal development. Some of the activities and projects include: developing activities and lessons for a pretend preschool; creating your own floor plan; learning and using great kitchen skills; cooking delicious food; sewing projects 2 piece pillowcase, and a drawstring backpack. Teen Living Course Description: This semester long course helps students understand and cope with personal, family, and social challenges. Emphasis is placed on communication, decision making
5 skills, and building stable relationships with family and peers. It addresses issues that impact teenagers: self concept, family and peer relationships, dating, preventing substance abuse, teenage pregnancy, and child abuse. Emphasis is placed on students taking personal responsibility for their life. Major activities include the extracurricular etiquette field trip to La Caille and the weekend long electronic baby simulation. Apparel Design and Production 1 Course Description: This semester long course builds on skills students learned in 7th grade College and Career Awareness FACS and introduces students to basic sewing and pressing equipment, fibers and fabrics, and introductory level construction techniques. Projects currently include gift bags, fleece winter hats, pillows, advanced backpacks with pockets and pajama pants/bottoms, but may change due to student interest. Sports and Outdoor Product Design I Course Description: This semester long course builds on skills students learned in 7th grade College and Career Awareness FACS and introduces students to basic sewing and pressing equipment, fibers and fabrics, and introductory level construction techniques. This course is specialized to concentrate on specific fabrics or projects such as outdoor clothing or sports clothing. Fashion Design Studio Course Description: This semester long course explores how fashion influences everyday
6 life and introduces students to the fashion industry. Topics covered include: fashion fundamentals, elements and principles of design, textiles, consumerism, and fashion related careers, with an emphasis on personal application. Foods and Nutrition I Course Description: This 9 th grade semester long class is an opportunity to develop cooking skills and learn to make nutritious, healthy food choices. We apply cooking techniques learned in class in numerous cooking labs. Some of the foods we cook are: Caramel Biscuit Ring (similar to Monkey Bread); Ham Fried Rice; Fettuccine Alfredo; Cheddar Bay Biscuits; Ramen Chicken Stir fry; Breakfast Burritos. Child Development Course Description: This semester long course provides students with an understanding of the aspects of human growth and development. Parenting skills are developed as positive guidance techniques and child-related issues are studied. At the completion of this course, students will be qualified to take Early Childhood Education I.
