5 BCI Card Borrow from other Libraries Use a BCI card to borrow books You can use the BCI card to visit a different university library in person: Up to 3 books, for 2 weeks McGill, UdeM, UQAM, Bishops, Polytechnique, Sherbrooke, BANQ and more across Canada, each with their own parameters To receive a card, take your student card to the circulation desk at Webster or Vanier libraries and ask for a BCI card

6 COLOMBO Interlibrary Loans Use Interlibrary loans/colombo to borrow books and access articles Request a book from another university library and it will be delivered to Concordia for your use (for 2 weeks) Request an article from another university library and (generally) a PDF copy will be delivered to your within a week Use the Create Request option on the left hand menu in COLOMBO to request articles

Journal citations may also contain Volume and issue information.

11 Scholarly Books what to look for Biographical details about the author/academic affiliations of the author. Are they an academic researcher, attached to a specific university or research center?

12 Database Searching - Tips AND limits how many results your search produces Example: healthcare AND Kenya OR increases the number of results your search produces Example: colonialism OR imperialism -exact phrase Example: public policy *- truncation: retrieves all words that start with the letters entered Example: government* (government, governments, governmental)

13 Avoid Searching with Linking words Effects on Impact of Consequences of Influence of Results Importance of Significance of Each author may use different linking words when discussing similar topics. You don t want your search to be limited to those books and articles that only contain the word effect or consequence.

14 Scholarly articles what to look for Length of the article. Scholarly articles average between pages. Biographical details about the author/academic affiliations of the author. Are they an academic researcher, attached to a specific university or research center?

15 Scholarly articles what to look for Scholarly journal articles will contain a list of references/works cited/bibliography of primary and secondary sources. A good bibliography will contain books and articles from academic publishers.

16 Check the journal title Use the Ulrich s Periodical Database Check the journal title Confirm if that journal is peer reviewed/refereed

18 Government and NGO/IGO information Use this keyword search to find documents from government websites

19 Website reliability Look for About Us, Mission and Vision or Contact Us for more information about the members of the organization Is it a.org or a.com? How recently has the information been updated? Are there dates? Is the organization affiliated with a government or international group?

20 Government and NGO/IGO information Add the name of an organization, like the UN or the WHO to narrow your search
