2 WEB ENABLED CLOUD LIBRARY SYSTEM: A CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK R. Jayakumar Librarian The Study L ecole Internationale, Puducherry N. Tamilselvan Chief Librarian RVS College of Engineering and Technology, Coimbatore ABSTRACT In this changing world our life and technology are also having a very dynamic change. We are in the Internet era and it is booming like anything. In this development library science is not an exception. We have a new technology of sharing data through Cloud Library. This technology makes us to move to the next level of Library Science, the Cloud Library. In this paper we are going to overview the upcoming technology Cloud library and Services. Keywords: Cloud Computing, Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), Platform as a Service (PaaS), Software as a Service (SaaS), Database Storage, Resource Sharing, NIST INTRODUCTION Cloud computing is an advanced form of computing which helps in storing and sharing large quantity of data on the web. Though the concept is not new, this form of computing has been adapted recently as an innovative technology (Kaushik & Kumar, 2013). In libraries we have large number of data and many are in digital format. If these are stored in the cloud several users from different regions will be able to access the data at the same time. Cloud computing library may reduce the time spent by the users to find what they need from the libraries. Cloud computing also minimises the cost of hardware and simplifies its maintenance. WHAT IS CLOUD COMPUTING? Cloud computing is a pay-per-use model for enabling convenient, on-demand network access to a shared pool of configurable and reliable computing resources (e.g., networks, servers, storage, applications, services) that can be rapidly provisioned and released with minimal consumer management effort or service provider interaction (Mell & Grance, 2009). TYPES OF CLOUD STORAGE Cloud storage can be categorised into four categories viz. personal cloud storage, public cloud storage, private cloud storage and hybrid cloud storage (Beal). Personal Cloud Storage Personal cloud storage is where an individual can store important personal data and access it anytime and anywhere. It is also known as mobile cloud storage which provides data syncing and sharing capabilities across multiple devices. Apple's icloud is an example of personal cloud storage. Public Cloud Storage In a Public cloud, the services are made available over an open network by a service provider. The services offered may be free and the security considerations are different and effected over a non-trusted network. Private Cloud Storage Private cloud storage is usually limited to a single organisation where in both the enterprise and the cloud storage provider manage the infrastructure. It may be managed internally or by third-party and hosted internally or externally. Page664

3 Private cloud storage helps to resolve the potential for security and performance concerns while still offering the advantages of cloud storage (Kaushik & Kumar, 2013). Hybrid Cloud Storage Hybrid cloud storage is a combination of public and private cloud storage through different service providers where both operate as different entities and offer the advantages of multiple deployment models. BENEFITS AND DISADVANTAGES OF CLOUD STORAGE The basic and major benefit of cloud storage is the accessibility of files anytime and anywhere, with only access to the internet. A cloud library can enable cloud OPAC to benefit users all over the world. Usually, most of the institutes in the world have their catalogue with their institutes local server made it available over the web. If the catalogue of the institutes made it available through cloud, it will be more beneficial to the users to find out the availability of materials. There are many advantages in using cloud storage. They are as follows: No physical boundary Round the clock availability Multiple access Information retrieval Preservation and conservation Space Added value Easily accessible Service oriented architecture Pay per use model Cost effective Portability Eco-friendly Adjustable storage Flexible and Innovative Every technology has some drawbacks. The biggest disadvantage of cloud storage is the need for internet connection and limited bandwidth. Organizations that require a large amount of storage may also find costs increase significantly after the first few gigabytes of data stored. Other limitations are: Moving to the trusted cloud computing service will become a challenging task. Data backup, intellectual property rights problems Security Reliability Interoperability User authentication Information organization Interface design Digital preservation Training and development SERVICE MODELS Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) The IaaS provides hardware components to the libraries which include servers with available capacity, communication technology and OS. The libraries will enter into a third party service agreement for hardware requirements and they just need to upload the necessary details on the cloud and make it accessible. The hardware components also include virtual machine disk image library, raw block storage, and file or object storage, firewalls, load balancers, IP addresses, virtual local area networks (VLANs), and software bundles, provided on demand basis. In India, companies such as Infosys, Bangalore, TCS, Wipro are some of the companies providing infrastructure as service. Platform as a Service (PaaS) PaaS provide the user with the necessary platform including operating system, programming language execution environment, database and web server. Application developers can develop applications on a cloud platform avoiding the cost and complexity of buying and managing the necessary hardware and software. For instance,.net, JAVA, Page665

4 UNIX environment will be provided by the vendor. In libraries, operating system required for library operations will be provided by the vendor as part of PaaS. Some of the service providers are Windows Azure, Google AppEngine. Software as a Service (SaaS) SaaS provides users facilities to access application software and databases which are available with the cloud vendors. The infrastructure and platforms that run the applications are managed by Cloud providers and the users don t manage them which in turn simplify maintenance and support. The users do not need to buy the software, install, run or maintain the services on their own server. SaaS is sometimes called as on-demand software and is priced on a pay-peruse basis or subscription fee. This model also provides online applications, limitless storage, free services, etc with just an internet connection. Since these applications are hosted centrally, updates can be released without the need for users to install new software. CLOUD COMPUTING FOR LIBRARIES Cloud computing has recently started gaining momentum among the libraries. There are many areas in which cloud computing techniques can be put to use in library activities (Kaushik & Kumar, 2013). Digital cloud Library A digital library resembles a normal library except that the different types of data including text, audio-visual materials, etc. are stored in digital format. This is done to enable access of the library resources through the internet. Digital libraries can vary immensely in size and scope, and can be maintained by individuals, organizations, or affiliated with established libraries, or with academic institutions. The electronic content may be stored locally, or in remote place and accessed via computer networks. Many academic libraries are actively involved in building their own repositories containing the institution's various publications. With the help of cloud technology the contents of the repository can be made accessible from any part of the world via internet. An example of cloud-based digital library software is Duraspace which includes two software viz. DSpace and Fedora Commons. OCLC World Cat OCLC is one of the best examples of making use of cloud computing for sharing information about libraries. OCLS s World Cat service provides the union catalogue of over libraries across the world. It is the world's largest bibliographic database. The services provided by OCLC include circulation, cataloguing, acquisition and other library related services on cloud platform through the web share management system. This system helps to develop an open and collaborative platform enabling the libraries to share their resources, services, ideas and problems with the library community on the cloud. Website Hosting on the cloud Web hosting service is a type of Internet hosting used via cloud computing that allows individuals and organizations to host their websites on third-party service providers instead of their own servers. The providers or the hosts, grant space for the organisations on their cloud server, thus allowing multiple editors to access the webpage from different parts of the world. An example of this type of service is Google Sites. Knimbus for scholars Knimbus, or Knowledge Cloud, is a cloud based research platform exclusive for searching and sharing different scholarly contents among research scholars. It provides access to millions of journal articles, patents, e-books, etc. for sharing and discussing with peer groups. Knimbus is currently used by several academic institutions, R&D labs, scholars, researchers and scientists. Knimbus helps in maximising the usage of all e-resources and provides customised search across selected sources through a single point search interface. Existing cloud services Cloud services such as Flicker, Dropbox, Jungle Disk, Google Doc, Sky Drive and so on are available on the web to store and access any files on the internet. These services help users to share and access files on the web without any unnecessary software. This feature can be extensively used by libraries as an added advantage for various purposes. Present Situation of Indian Libraries Cloud computing in India is still in its budding stage. As the concept of digital libraries is still under development, it will take more time to successfully implement cloud technology in the Indian libraries. The main reason for this delay Page666

5 owes to the lack of expertise in the field of library management, and poor quality of service providers and technical support. However, there are some libraries that are trying to develop in this area and very soon cloud computing would become full-fledged. CONCLUSION The extensive use of cloud computing in various areas points toward a promising future to the growth of innovative library facilities. Despite the need of various service providers and software to implement cloud technology it gives many advantages in the field of library science. It makes resources available to general public. Cloud computing also reduces cost and need to maintain hardware and maintenance for digital library. REFERENCES Beal, V. (n.d.). Cloud Storage. Retrieved May 2, 2015, from webopedia: Chandra, D. G.
