1 Introduction The award winning Complementary Therapies Unit at The Christie offers an eclectic mix of therapies and therapeutic approaches to a diverse and vulnerable patient/client population. The Integrative Hypnotherapy Diploma was developed for complementary therapists, counsellors, psychotherapists and medical personnel who wish to integrate hypnotherapy into their therapeutic skill set. The course acknowledges the wide overlap that exists between therapies and their capacity to induce what appears to be altered states. Students will be expected to contribute their own unique experience and knowledge. Indeed you are a key element in how the hypnotherapeutic techniques or protocols will be taught, demonstrated and delivered. In this way we all benefit from fresh adaptations, observations and approaches. Eligibility You will already have a therapy qualification recognised by a relevant professional body with insurable training You will be receiving supervision or in the process of arranging supervision Course Framework The course focuses on the equal development of your philosophy of practice combined with core practical skills. This requires a high degree of commitment and openness to practising and sharing your learning experiences. You will be taught approaches that are respectful, effective and suitable for a wide range of issues both for individuals and groups. Panic, anxiety, performance issues, phobias, smoking cessation, and pain control are specifically addressed on key weekends but they are used to illustrate appropriate therapeutic interventions rather than to encourage a rigid, scripted protocol to symptoms. The training will provide you with an excellent practical and academic foundation to begin your clinical/private practice. Your tutors have selected hypnotherapy applications with a strong evidence base and will offer their own vivid real-life examples and case study vignettes from experience on the frontline dealing with a wide range of conditions. On successful completion of the course, observation of highly experienced practitioners in their clinical work may be negotiable and supervision will always be available to provide on-going support. The course is delivered one weekend per month for ten months starting in the October of each year. Classroom/personal tuition exceeds 140 hours but this does not include the time needed for your written assignments, reading and research, practice and supervision. Coursework and Assessment Ongoing practice and demonstration of essential skills, group inductions and case evaluation Written assignment (2,500 words) illustrating your philosophy of practice and assessing the value of hypnotherapy in relation to your primary therapy A group presentation related to the above (30 to 45 mins) Written assignment (3,000 words) on either: - theories of hypnosis; a specialist area in hypnosis; a case history integrating therapies 1

2 Creating a therapeutic recording (25 mins) and written critical evaluation (1,500 words) Accreditation Without statutory registration or regulation for hypnotherapy as a profession we make it our explicit policy to have meaningful and verifiable external assessment. This is provided by Tim Duerden, a registered Hypnotherapist, Counsellor, Lecturer at Salford University and trainer in Mindfulness. Tim Duerden oversees the course content, marking of assignments and meets with each diploma cohort to ensure that we deliver a high standard of teaching. The course exceeds the current National Occupational Standards (NOS) for the provision of hypnotherapy training ( On successful completion of the diploma you will be invited to join the Integrative Hypnotherapy Association and are eligible for discounts on further complementary therapy training events at The Christie. Exploring the evidence for cessation Weekend Eight Using ego-state therapy with specific reference to smoking cessation. Throw away those jaded scripts, challenge your own beliefs and learn how to work in the most effective way for the client. Specific skills: Students will critically evaluate the evidence base for techniques out there and have an opportunity to watch several live demonstrations in smoking cessation. This may include using seeding models, motivational interviewing, waking/formal hypnosis, NLP, CBT, anchoring, regression, timeline therapy, metaphor, aromastix, acupuncture, reflexology and the ever-controversial NRT. Weekend Nine Pain Control The nature and perception of pain The placebo/nocebo effect Dissociation techniques Cognitive techniques Psychoanalytic techniques The role and evidence base for hypnosis Legal and safety issues Transference Secondary Gains Hypno-analytic techniques overview Using dream states Hypnopictography/Automatic writing Chevreul s pendulum Ethical conflicts in integrating therapies Specific skills: glove anaesthesia, magic circle, symptom manipulation, symptom substitution, time distortion, imagery techniques, distraction techniques, installing and utilising rapid selfhypnosis, rapid re-inductions, using regression for pain control/symptom relief, full mind/body dissociation. Weekend Ten Bringing it all together The Class Topic Past topics have been emotional eating/bingeing; inner child work; advanced regression techniques; IBS and Peter Whorwell s gut directed therapy; psychoneuroimmunology; and support for the cancer journey. The day will also be open to previous graduates to give you a chance to meet with your colleagues and build a professional network 3.
