1 Department of Mental Health, Social Work And Interprofessional Learning Continuing Professional Development for Social Work We have developed a suite of modules to support CPD which can be done either as a stand- alone or be mapped to a pathway which has several exit awards for example:

2 2 Post Graduate Certificate in Professional Practice (Adults/Mental Health/Children and Families/Practice Education/Leadership) [0 Credits] Post Graduate Diploma in Professional Practice (Adults/Mental Health/Children and Families/Practice Education/Leadership/Evidence Based Parenting) [120 Credits] MA Professional Practice (Adults/Mental Health/Children and Families/Practice Education/Leadership) [180 Credits] We can also run tailored programmes for you in house or accredit your programmes within our Work Based Learning Programme. Some of these are subject to pending validation and will be confirmed once they have been approved and quality assured. 3 3 Details of the CPD Programme Practice Education Modules Enabling Others (SWK 3425) and Practice Teaching and Assessment Education (SWK 3420) together enable candidates to reach Stage 2 of the Practice Educator Professional Standards. Both modules include an overview of the main areas involved in supervising, teaching, mentoring, coaching and assessing others, namely social work students in relation to the HCPC Professional Standards and the nine domains of the Professional Capabilities Framework. Credits from these modules can contribute to any specialist pathway in the MA Professional Practice or combined with another 15 credit module can lead to a Graduate or Post Graduate Certificate in Professional Practice. The modules are usually offered in conjunction with practice learning placements for our social work students following the BA (Hons) and MA and you are also invited to attend the students placement recall days. Enabling Others carries 15 academic credits at Level and involves attending four one day workshops plus blended learning and the option of attending the social work recall days (Tuesdays 24/9; 1/10; 15/10; 19/ ). Practice Teaching and Assessment carries 30 academic credits at Level. These both involve five one-day workshops plus blended learning and the social work recall days (Thursdays 28/11/13; and 30/1/14; 20/2/14; 2/2/14; 20/3/14). Adults and Mental Health Modules Strengthening Mental Health Practice (SWK 3414) is an interprofessional module that is also linked to the Postgraduate Diploma Post Qualifying Higher Specialist Mental Health Award and is aimed at different professionals wishing to become an Approved Mental Health Practitioner. Participants may also go on to do our Best Interest Assessor Module on the Mental Health pathway within our MA Professional Practice. This module carries 30 Academic Credits at Levels or and involves attending 5 full day workshops with blended learning (Tuesdays 8/10; 15/10; 22/10; 29/10 and 19/11/13). Best Interest Assessor (IPL 3400) is an interprofessional programme which aims to equip experienced practitioners in health and social care with the skills and knowledge required to enable them to undertake a Best Interests Assessment. A Best Interest Assessment (BIA) is a specific task related to implementing the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards and on completion of the module and successful assessment, participants will be eligible to apply for approval to their Supervisory Body as a Best Interests Assessor having met in full the training requirements specified by the Department of Health. This module is being revalidated and seeking reapproval to meet the new statutory requirements and will increase its credit rating from 15 to 30 academic credits. The last run of our existing programme will be 28/5; 29/5; 30/5; 31/5 and 3//13. It will continue to run as a block one week programme but will include a practice element. The revalidated programme will run twice this year w/c 2/12; 3/12; 4/12; 5/12; /12/13 plus 30/1/14 and w/c 19/5/14 23/5/14 plus //14. We can also run this module on demand where there are more than 20 participants. Safeguarding and Supporting Adults (IPL) is an interprofessional module for professionals working with vulnerable adults. Participants will be encouraged to critically review, evaluate and critique the legal, policy and practice frameworks alongside the opportunity to develop and improve their knowledge and skills in safeguarding intervention and providing preventative support. Additionally the interprofessional nature of the student cohort and content will facilitate students learning through cross fertilisation of roles and responsibilities which reflects the desired context for practice and builds on a systemic model using Family Group Conferencing.The module carries 30 academic credits and is another module that can be mapped to the MA in Professional Practice in the adult pathway. Participants are expected to attend 4 one day workshop together with blended learning (9/1 & 10/1; 30/1 & 31/1/14).

4 4 Child & Family Oriented Modules Safeguarding Children: learning from inter-professional practice (IPL 303) is an interprofessional module which critically examines the legal, policy and practice frameworks for safeguarding and supporting children and their families within a multi-agency context. Participants will utilise knowledge incorporating research evidence and be encouraged to demonstrate sophistication in their direct practice with children and their families. The module facilitates effective inter-professional working across agencies providing services to children and their families as well as within participants own disciplines. There is emphasis on personal reflection and case scenario based discussion to improve practice expertise and experience. The module carries 30 academic credits at Level and and together with Looked After Children, Policy and Practice, are linked to the MA Professional Practice Children and Families Pathway. Participants will be expected to attend five, one day workshops plus 5 x 1 day workshops plus blended learning (23/1 & 24/1; /2; 20/2 (at the Whittington Education Centre) and /3/2014). Looked After Children: Policy and Practice (SWK3431) helps social workers and those professionals working closely with Looked After Children to examine the legal, policy and practice frameworks. Participants will increase and deepen their knowledge and have the opportunity to develop more critical and effective social work practice with Looked After Children, paying attention to ethics, values and inclusive child focussed practice which builds on the evidence and research available. This module carries 30 academic credits at Level and and involves attending four one day workshops and with a blended learning approach (30/1 & 31/1; 10/2 & 11/2, 2014). General/Organisational Management Modules Professional Supervision in the Public and Community Services (IPL 4100) aims to further develop the student s knowledge, skills and confidence to enable them to enhance supervision practices within the workplace and ultimately improve service quality for service-users. Participants will be challenged to explore and evaluate their own supervision skills and develop greater self-awareness of the effective use of self within relationship-based supervision. The module will introduce and discuss a range of tools that supervisors can apply within relevant practice situations. Participants will be facilitated to develop their own supervision style within their chosen profession and how to apply or adapt this within interdisciplinary contexts. The module carries 30 credits at Level and contributes to any pathway in the MA Professional Practice. It also contributes to the Post Graduate Diploma in Evidence Based Parenting Programmes Supervision & Leadership which is a new programme starting in This module involves attending 4 one day workshops plus a blended learning approach particularly around the participants own direct supervision practice (11/11 & 12/11; 9/12 & 10/12/2013). Critical Thinking and Analysis (new) is aimed at facilitating qualified social workers to develop further their engagement with underpinning principles of critical thinking and reasoned discernment in relation to their current practice and the nine domains of the Professional Capabilities Framework. Participants will be facilitated to consolidate their knowledge and skills and to recognise and achieve more in-depth reflection upon their current practice experience in order to improve their knowledge and understanding of the complexity of practice and decision making processes. This module carries 30 Academic Credits at Levels or and involves attending 3 one day workshops and blended learning (Thursdays, 3/10; 10/10, & /11, 2013).

5 5 Post Graduate Diploma in Evidence Based Parenting Programmes Supervision & Leadership (is a programme comprising) Exploring Evidence Based parenting programmes (IPL4120) and Building and Leading EBPP Teams: Supervision and Leadership in Practice (IPL4121) together with Professional Supervision in the Public and Community Services (IPL4100) is anew programme that enables participants to demonstrate professional leadership in the area of evidence based parenting and supervision. Designed to support those working in a recognised Parenting Programme (EBPP) such as FAST at Middlesex, participants will be equipped to undertake a range of supervisory tasks and to facilitate the competence of those engaged in delivering the EBPP. Together these modules facilitate participants in disseminating their mastery of EBBPs to enable those delivering them to empower parents to improve their own life chances and those of their children with improved parenting skills, with a greater degree of confidence and make supportive and enabling links with their wider community. This programme is aimed at professionals who wish to play a role in helping to reduce the inequalities that currently exist between different children s life chances. The individual modules are also available to those following the MA Professional Practice pathway in Children and Families but may also suit those following Practice Education who are working with placements in schools. Dates are to be confirmed as the modules are provided on demand. Leading and Developing Public and Community Services (Graduate Diploma or Post Graduate Certificate) is a programme comprised of: Leadership of Public and Community Services (IPL 3100/4100) aims to critically develop the participant s knowledge and skills to enable them to work effectively within the context of leadership and service development within the workplace. Participants will be facilitated to develop and enhance their own leadership role within their chosen profession, and to critically explore and evaluate their own leadership style.the module also aims to integrate the common needs of different groups of leaders (and where relevant managers) by focussing on the theoretical underpinnings of leadership but being flexible enough to facilitate the direct application of these knowledge and skills in the workplace. The module runs one morning a week (usually Tuesdays) for ten weeks from week commencing October 2013 in semester one and allows those taking the whole programme to attend IPL3200/4200 in the afternoon of the same day. Service Development and Quality Improvement in the Public and Community Services (IPL 3200/4200) aims to provide managers and practitioners with the opportunity to explore legislation and policy directions in public and community services. There will be a focus on the impact of the practitioner s role in leading the development of services in a way that gives high importance to quality enhancing and using technology such as digital storytelling to promote good practice.the module runs one morning a week (usually Tuesdays) for ten weeks from W/C October in semester one and allows those taking the whole programme to attend IPL3100/4100 in the morning of the same day. Practice Based Learning Project (IPL 340/430) aims to integrate the common needs of different groups of leaders and is designed especially for students who have previously completed other academic credits level or and carries 30 academic credits, within the Department of Mental Health and Social Work to complete a relevant award and the project developed can be thus tailored to the specialist pathway followed. This module is also the third module in the Graduate Diploma and Post Graduate Certificate in Leadership to complete the award. It can also be undertaken as a stand-alone module. The purpose of the module is to provide a framework for students to continue the learning that they have achieved during the linked module(s)by putting this into practice within their own work setting. This module aims to enable students to review and reflect on the learning that they have earlier achieved, and to plan and negotiate a professionally and academically coherent project for practice based study. The rationale, aims and objectives of this module are drawn up by participants in a learning agreement negotiated with the module leader. Each project will be unique in terms of its aims however participants will be required to demonstrate that

6 the module clearly links the learning for the related module to practice development within their own work, and that the project leads to useful outcomes for specific practice/ work based activity. e relevant managers) by focusing on the theoretical underpinnings of leadership.
